  • In a 43-minute interview to Karan Thapar, on his recently published memoirs about his years as editor of the Indian Express called ‘The Commissioner for Lost Causes’, Arun Shourie says he is not sure whether Giani Zail Singh was absolutely dead serious about dismissing Rajiv Gandhi or whether he was creating a great charade to frighten the Prime Minister and thus force him to pay greater attention and respect to Giani Zail Singh. However, the story as told by Arun Shourie clearly seems to suggest that Giani Zail Singh was serious.

I hv , in the many videos i hv seen, by Karan Thapar in the Wire , made (legitimately ) caustic and stinging comments. But this interview was a warm, delightful and utterly human one. Even KT is so acceptable here. The reason for this is the extraordinary human being Arun Shourie. He is a wonderful and outstanding son of our great nation. A man who has contributed to great public discourse, morality, professionalism and rare scholarship. It is a pity that he could not be made Finance Minister , not just for the excellence but for the moral and intellectual gravitas he would have brought to the job. He is perhaps the only person who could be critical of any politician but deep down each and every one of that tribe would know from the core of his or her heart that AS is way above personal prejudices and preferences. AS is a beacon that sprouts our of sheer character and spiritual depth. Such a rare gem.

While the discussion is indeed delightful, it also is a story of sordid state of affairs under Congress rule in India since 1947- corruption, misuse of power, self serving politicians, men and women with feet of clay etc. No wonder even after 75 years of independence, we are almost where we were then!
    2. Vasant Dada Patil's reference as a possible replacement for Rajeev is totally unexpected and surprising. No one in Maharashtra ever talked of this.
    3. It also shows power newspaper and journalists (editors etc.) had in those days. Thankfully, this power has now much eroded due to proliferation of social media. Of course, Modi has made them irrelevant as well in the last 7 years!!
    4. Good to see Arun fresh and in good health. He now seems to have picked up energy to fight Modi till 2024!! Yashwant Sinha should be happy with that.
