I don't either. I think listening to videos like this helps people understand fighting game fundamentals and mechanics. It's crucial for getting into any fighter.
The main buff to Chun for me is v-shift. Her ex legs gives her a much better than average punish out of V-shift, and roundhouse gives her great conversions if she's trying to bait the enemy's shift.
God, I missed your "at a glance" series ! So clean and concise ! I can't wait for you to cover characters like Nash and Ed since they both got a lot of changes that seems to make them better
Man, great video and you make this look easy. It's been a couple decades since I've played SF and I can barely string along a combo, Recently I've been practicing in the trial challenges (Vol. 1) and 2nd trial always gets me stumped jumping HK > C.HP > HK SBK. The C. HP has two hits but you're supposed to cancel into HK SBK @ the first hit. For some reason the animation cancels only trigger every so often for me when I do land it. I'm using a Mayflash F500 v2 w/ Sanwa buttons and stiffer spring in the lever, just fyi. I'll be subscribing :)
Ex bird kick being more than -16 now means that Alex can now punish with his 17f stHK. I think it's the only reversal he had to punish differently because of how "safe" it was
-16 to -20 bird kick also means laura can do f.hp target combo to punish. idk if its optimal over a st.hp crush counter combo though i'll have to lab that
As a chun main, her V-Skill II is much more usable now especially in combos. the tiny nerfs suck but doesn't destroy her really, she's still top tier IMO.
I would love to make vids like this but theres no way I could live up to this quality. Your Ryu vid has me picking him back up and labbing as we speak.
@@TheFDream More specifically, theres no point in making these quick glance looks at new balance patches. I do make my own content i should have clarified that I would like to make more stuff like this.
@@DaigosFriend1 That's good. My answer still stand though. Doubt bafael was amazing when the season 2 patch notes came around but he tried his best. And that's what matters.
I think her AA nerf with the general changes will really hurt her gameplay as she will be a lot easier to jump in on, since s. lk will lose or trade with about every jump heavy button now. She'll probably still be fine, but I believe it has killed any chance she can ever have of being a contender for a spot in top tier
Man I try to main chun li but I keep losing due to her charge inputs witch give me a hard time to due to I keep walking back and spamming Kikoken and same for spinning bird kick when I try to combo it but I jump instead or it just doesn’t work
Bafael, love your videos and input. I think Chun Li is significantly nerfed for Season 5 and I think you're overlooking 2 significant reasons why she is worse this patch. 1. H Legs no longer provides oki. CR MK (empty cancel) H Legs, no longer provides oki. This was an extremely powerful tool for her neutral game to be able to walk forward and backwards while threatening this empty cancel. Not only did it have great range and damage, it also provided her strong pressure because she was + after the knockdown on H legs. Now the opponent is knocked so far away, that it provides no Oki unless you're in the corner. This also means that one would now have to use EX Legs as the empty cancel in order to get basically the same thing that was meterless before. Additionally doing the V Skill 1 combo requires doing the trickier jumping into the air with 2 down MKs into H legs which is far less consistent than just hitting H Legs after V Skill 1. 2. Adjustments to Anti-Air Properties of Grounded Normal Attacks. a) Made the hurtboxes of the lower half of all jumping attacks INVINCIBLE TO GROUNDED LIGHT ATTACKS while the character is descending after the jump. This makes Chun Li's ST LK basically WORTHLESS as an anti air because anyone jumping into you is basically invincible to it. ST LK went from her to go anti-air (besides B HK which is 4 frames slower, provides less "oki" after she walks or dashes up, and is easier for the opponent to react to visually on screen and has less mix up potential than ST LK, but covers cross ups better) to a worthless button other than the SBK confirms you showed, which are pretty cool. Everything else that was additionally nerfed about her is just icing on the cake. The changes to V-Skill 2 are pretty good/interesting, for some of her match ups, but I'm not too excited about it. Curious to hear your response to what I provided. I don't think Chun Li is garbage tier or anything like that, but I feel like she went from an easily top 10 character to mid tier. I'll probably just play Sakura and Ryu instead now =(
I didn't know air normals got buffed to be semi-immune to lights. Guess it's b+HK from here on out. I still think HK legs knockdown is much more powerful than it was in season 3 and prior though, even if you don't get oki the corner carry is like 1/3 of the stage width especially if they back roll. Also, I think Chun li has some really good interactions with v-shift. Notably HK is really good at catching a v-shift and still getting a combo (many CC buttons whiff) while EX legs is really reliable at getting real punishes on Chun's successful v-shifts.
@@Bafael Thanks for the reply! Means a lot. You bring up some good points. I haven't learned/explored much about how v-shift has impacted all the characters! Perhaps I shall reserve my opinion until the meta and labbing has been done. Perhaps Capcom will make further changes down the road despite this being the last season.
So in my initial testing, her st. lk seems to basically be unaffected by these changes. I think it might have applied only to light punches, and not every light. So something peculiar is happening here

I just wish this kind of care and consideration was given to all characters, there's still no meaningful way to use Cammy vskill1, can't use it reliability against fireballs, can't combo into it for vmeter build. These changes are great for Chun, and slightly nerfing vs1, makes vs2 even better as an alternative. These kinds of changes show me the devs do understand the need to adjust things like vs1 and legs so other moves like SBK and vs2 see use but where is that understanding for Laura vs2 and vt2 and other characters? Ugh. I just don't get it this direction. But great coverage on the changes as always.
Akuma VS2 pales in comparison of his VS1 since his VS1 is one of the more versatiles VS in the game, but as a skill it is still very good, the same can not be said to Chun-Li's VS2 prior to this buff.
@@Bafael Yea, at least it allow you to do H Lightning Kick now for the activation, I was so frustrated that they don't even allow it before, only EX can combo, that was stupid. Although it can do more now, but I personally think that her VS2 is still pretty underwhelming compare to her VS1. :(
To me, she is overall nerfed. You fix bad and useless moves but gimp her mid range game, and nerf her pokes when vshift is all about evading and punishing medium, hard pokes, weak start up fireballs, ... also, so many characters that are mid and low tiers got strong buffs to deal with pokes. Yeah, she has become A+ to B+ or B. Good but not great anymore.. Wait for it... She will be in a lot less tourneys if she stays the same with those poke nerfs.
Oh she's definitely nerfed. St LK no longer an anti air (universal nerf to all light attacks in the game), HK Lightning Legs has much worse oki which is also going to affect her damage output because now you're going to have to choose between sacrificing damage for better oki or more damage with poor oki in VT2 combos. Hopefully the new V-shift system will benefit her.
