  • While we get to review tons of new and improved scopes, it's not often we get to review a scope that we'd say was revolutionary to the thermal or NV industry. Today, however, we can make that claim. Hans and Jason are proud to introduce the brand new Pulsar Thermion 2 XL50 1024x768 thermal rifle scope! Yes that's right, 1024 thermal sensor resolution. We are blessed to have had this scope in our hands for several weeks and been able to put it through it's paces in the field and we're here today to offer our full field review to tell you what this scope will do, what it won't do, what you can expect from it and who it's good for. This scope is going to send shock waves through the thermal industry, especially considering the price. If you're interested in high end thermal rifle scope or just want to see what the future holds for thermal optics, you don't want to miss this episode.

    *** Why Hunt Coyotes and Predators? ***
    Coyotes and Predators, similar to hogs, cause financial stress for many families in rural communities. Coyotes kill livestock, plain and simple. Ranchers have battled coyotes killing cattle since the early days of ranching and it costs them dearly. Cattle ranching is a business, the cows aren't pets, every time they lose a calf to a coyote those families lose a paycheck. Cattle ranchers hate coyotes just as much as Farmers hate hogs! We hunt coyotes to protect the livelihood of our friends and neighbors that depend on their cattle business to feed their family...

    Love y'alls content! Not in the market for an $8k scope, but get excited listening regardless.
    One suggestion I would have that I feel is lacking in your show - in the past when I've been buying thermal, I really come to youtube for subjective data about image quality. All the specs are easy to find online, but what I can't get is a comparison of the image quality of scope A to scope B. Like you said in this podcast, the recorded videos thermals take arent the same as what your eye sees. So I come to your videos hoping to get a subjective comparison of how the image appears to your eye (the specs are easy to find elsewhere).
    So for instance in this video, somewhere in the 40 minutes I was hoping you would compare the image quality of this thermal to the only other > 640 thermal on the market. Obviously vastly different price points, but is the image a little better in the iray? A lot better? Subjective I know but info like that is a lot more valuable to a consumer than the specs.
    Again, I love your videos so I'm not trying to trash talk, but in almost every review you talk favorably about an optic's image quality without really giving any indication of how the image stacks up (eg is the image quality in this AGM 640 slightly worse than the comparable pulsar 640)? Yes it'd be subjective, but it'd be hugely useful for consumers!
    Thanks for all y'all do!

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it's not quite as easy as it seems. We found out years ago that the best way to ruin a review, make people mad, lose customers, start fights and spend all our time policing the comments section is to publicly compare optics of different brands. It just starts the Ford, Chevy, Dodge debate. As you said, it's subjective. Selling all the optics, we do our best to be as unbiased as possible but our opinion is still subjective. Most end users come to the table with pretty large biases towards one optic or the other. Maybe their scope is the only one they've ever looked through or often they have confirmation bias and want to believe they made the right choice, so their scope has be better than "that" scope etc. It's a can of worms that once opened, ends in a fight every single time. Again, see above...Ford, Chevy, Dodge.haha!
      However, when it comes to comparing the image of scope A against scope B, this is a service we offer to our customers who choose to buy from us. One of the benefits of buying from Outdoor Legacy is that you get to call us before hand, pick our brain, ask all the questions you have and even pin us down on how the image compares to other specific optics etc. If someone is buying their optic from us, we're happy to answer those questions and make sure they know what to expect before they open the box when it arrives at the door. We offer all the info we can cram into a 40 minute show but when it comes down to the very fine specific details, that's a service we are proud to offer our customers who choose us to make their purchases from.
      Thanks again for watching and thanks for the suggestion. We agree that it "seems" helpful but from the school of hard knocks, we figured out many years ago, it's not.ha! Thanks again and have a great day.

    Great video as always. Since they are in the same price range ( I know base mag is way different) Image quality wise. Halo xrf vs this scope? What's your opinion.

      @TheLateNightVisionShow  10 месяцев назад +2

      We appreciate you watching and commenting on the video. As we said towards the end of the review, the XL50 is best suited for a hunter whose average shot is 150 yards and under, but also wants to have some long range hunting and ID'ing capabilities. On the other hand we feel that the XRF is best for someone whose average shooting distance is closer to 200 yards, mainly because of the high base magnification and narrow field-of-view. Obviously, if your average shot is 100 yards, you wouldn't want or need a 3.5x base mag scope. Conversely, if your average is 200 yards, you wouldn't want a scope with 1.75 base magnification, even if that base resolution is 1024. With all that being said, the XRF and XL50 are for two totally different types of hunters. Both are great, but not comparable to each other...

    One of the specs that keeps getting left out, is the refresh rate or the frame rate.
    One of the biggest turn-offs to me on the Rico 1280 is its frame rate is 30 frames per second to keep the sensor from overheating. And that's great for shooting something sitting still, but I imagine you'll get motion blur trying to shoot something moving.
    I'm curious as to what the refresh rate is on this unit. If it's at 50 or 60 to me that would be a selling point.

      Yes sir all the Ulis/Lynred sensors are 50hz. We have seen no issues with the 30hz of the RS75 but for anyone concerned, there’s no worry with the XL50. Thanks for watching

      @swisswend8177 10 месяцев назад +2

      If I remember correctly, the 1280 sensor will overheat with a higher frame rate, therefore Iray had to keep it at 30hz. @@TheLateNightVisionShow

    I really want to go the Pulsar route due to their color palette selection and now this, but these scopes are too damn big. Really want to see a more compact size from them.

    Something i wanted to hear about is how does this scope cut the bad weather? Yall said youve had it for a while and testing it now. Hows it do in rain? Fog? High dew point/humidity? Obviously gotta wait doe the snow aspects which is whatd concern me the most with battery life and cutting through the snow

    • @TheLateNightVisionShow

      We've run it side by side the Thermion 2 XP50 Pro which is arguably one of the (if not the) very best optics for poor, humid, wet conditions and the XL50 performs nearly exactly the same. It was overcast all day yesterday, 80+ degrees, rained 3.5" and last night and it's still nasty, wet and humid and this AM the image looks good. We just put it next to the XP50 and can see no difference in it's abilities in poor weather.
      Pulsar isn't getting enough credit for this but their optics are out performing everyone else on the market right now in bad conditions and this is a big change from 3+ years ago.

    Why I hate the Thermion series ? The internal battery. Every battery got its lifespan and cycles of chatges. Imagine such an expensive unit and the internal battery dying on you 4 years after purchase. Now what ? That's why I like thermals with standard battries that can be completely removed or replaced.

      Majority of serious thermal users update there scope every year so we not worried about batteries internal or not, plus I can personally say that pulsar will replace those internal batteries if they go bad 10 years from now and if not they will give you newer current thermal replacement. Pulsar does not flaunt there after sale warranty period past 3 factory warranty, I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed. If you don’t like the price wait until next year or when they discontinue it for nice price drop and make a purchase. You get what you pay for.

      @@audieladd2476I agree with you. I dought people are updating there thermals yearly. However I can tell you Pulsars customer service is excellent. I wanted to buy a battery pack for an older thermal I had but there weren't any left in the USA. I was leaving on a hunt in a week so they sent one from Europe two day delivery and did not charge me for shipping it. I have owned other brand thermals but from my experience I will stick with Pulsar.

      Not that we’re aware of with the Stream Vision 2 app. It was definitely an issue with the Stream Vision 1 and we used to get customer calls about it a lot but I can’t even remember the last call about the Stream Vision 2 app? Not saying no one could have a problem but if it’s wide spread that would be news to us.

      There’s no question the RS75 1280 image is significantly better than the XL50’s 1024…..as it should be for an additional $8k.lol We still love the RS75 and it holds some serious advantages in image quality and ID range over the XL50. But at the price point the XL50 is an extremely fair priced optic and one that many more people can justify and afford. So I still think there is something for everyone. Thanks for watching!
