  • Hello, Internet and WELCOME to Retro Nick Relics! The show where I scour the Internet, to find all the weird stuff YOU have never played and give my 2-bit opinion on these 8 through 32-bit… relics.
    Today, Retro Nick teams up with Retro Game Squad's Alex Mort, to tear down Capcom's Street Fighter The Movie, or "Street Fighter: Real Battle on Film" as it's known in Japan, for the Sega Saturn. Alex provides an in-depth breakdown on the differences between the Arcade and home versions, while I point and laugh at some of the more questionable artistic choices made.
    Is this the most embarrassing Street Fighter game? Well, it certainly is the ugliest! Watch and see!
    Sources.
    Street Fighter The Movie, Saturn gameplay-captured from original software on original hardware through an Elgato HD60 S connected to a RetroTink 2X. Street Fighter the Movie is owned by Universal Pictures. Street Fighter The Movie (arcade), is the property of Capcom and Incredible Technologies. A HUGE thank you to the Retro Game Squad podcast. Alex took the time to research and write the comparison of the Saturn and Arcade versions of the game, while Jon offered helpful advice on capturing from an original Saturn through the Elgato capture box, and Jeff offered suggestions for the title and feedback on progress. They often have me on to talk about more obscure Japanese games that no one around here has ever heard of! You can find them here, at www.retrogamesquad.com, and you can hear yours truly wax nostalgic on their Turbografx-16 and Sega Saturn episodes, as well as their co-op games and PC-Engine episodes.
    Also, a VERY special thank you to Vito Gesualdi who took the time to offer some helpful critique with my background graphics, which is why we have the nice, subtle diagonal logos slowly gliding by with scanlines instead of a bright, red mess. Check out his channel at / vito , or listen to his podcast “The Biggest Problem in the Universe,” and vote on all the problems at wwww.biggestproblem.com

    A better idea to make a game based on the Street Fighter movie:
    *By not making it into some lame MK knock-off with KI combos!*
    It would be better as a 2004 game on the PS2/XBOX/PC where the cutscenes are a re-telling of the movie and it's a 3rd-person battle royale game where in "Story-mode" players take the roles of either an A.N. Captain (Sawada) or a Shadaloo Captain (Raven) and the Street Fighters are only playable in "Deathmatch-mode", "Campaign-mode" and "Arcade-mode" at the multiplayer/online section.

    • @TheRetron8
      @TheRetron8  Месяц назад

      That definitely would have been the smarter way to go as far as execution. Timing wise however, people wrote this game and the movie it was based on off as a joke practically on release. I don’t think anyone would have cared in 2004.
      Still, there were about a billion better directions they could have taken this thing in.

    I don’t hate street fighter the movie… well the movie I do. As a 10 year old kid when this come out, even then, at 10, could see how bad this was. I was already watching movies that were far superior than this. Again, 10. A video game movie should be enough, but nope. Awful.
    As for the two versions of the game, the home version (I played the PlayStation version) just seems sluggish and dull. Still street fighter, if you know SF2 at all, you can navigate this one, but certainly nothing special. As for the arcade port. I kinda like it. Where again it’s still street fighter, we can still figure it out, but the pacing is faster, funner, and looks fine. Again, not outstanding either, but it’s fun game. And my pick out of the two versions

    • @TheRetron8
      @TheRetron8  8 дней назад +1

      I remember being 10 and baffled at the movie as well. I got the Saturn version for Christmas and-while I didn’t hate it, it was nowhere near the masterpiece that Street Fighter Alpha 2 was. I played the arcade version for the first time for this review and I think I like it better than the home port as well. Sure the home port is better balanced, but it’s just a slower, uglier version of SSF2T. The arcade version is unique and frantic. Definitely fun, if unbalanced.

  • @syckles
    @syckles Месяц назад

    Neither game was that bad, and its impressive the arcade version was made from the ground up. It cashed in on Mortal Kombat, but its neat seeing JCVD and other characters in a digitized form. There was a lot of work and passion that went into the arcade game, and its likely this game is over looked because of the movie's flop. It didnt really seem like your review was fair, just "Here is nostalgia people hate on for me to make fun of, let me get someone who plays fighting games talk about it and throw in Simpsons clips."

    • @TheRetron8
      @TheRetron8  Месяц назад

      Really, neither game is that bad, but I don't think either of them is that good, which is why I gave it a 5/10, or strictly average score. The copy of SFTM for the Saturn I captured from is the one I got for Christmas in 1997 and I only just played the arcade version for the first time this year. I brought in Alex to weigh in because he has a better understanding of fighting game mechanics and could explain the jankiness better than I could. The Saturn port is an average-if ugly, version of an otherwise great fighting game and I think the arcade version is actually a lot more fun to play.

      Ha! What can I say, I love the drops in 90s talk radio. I definitely agree that the C64 is a worse game. I’d also argue that the MS DOS port of the original Street Fighter is even worse than that. However, I do believe that Capcom themselves is likely the most embarrassed by this outing.
      They left the game adaptation of Street Fighter’s live action motion picture debut up to the brilliant minds behind Golden Tee, and the game was so broken that they had to take the digitized assets and basically ruin Super Street Fighter II Turbo.
