    Love that you say Double Dragon V's graphics are "kinda cartoony"... its actually based off the Double Dragon cartoon series that was running at the time.
    Fun fact that I read somewhere... apparently stuff like Double Dragon V happened because Tradewest thought their deal with Technos Japan gave them more rights than they actually did, they thought they were allowed to use the Double Dragon characters in other games, which led to not only this but also the Battletoads crossover game... neither of which can be re-released now because in fact, no, Technos did NOT authorize those.

    Bebe's Kids is based off of a 1992 animated film that was based off of the late comedian Robin Harris stand up routine about his girlfriend's terrible children. The stand up was hilarious... the movie was terrible. Oddly it came out 2 years after he passed away. Someone else played his part - I feel like they started it while he was alive and he passed away during filming so they hired someone else to redo/finish his lines.

    Not gonna lie... I actually really like Mario is Missing. When I was a kid and my dad took me to rent games, I often would rent it. English is not my first language, however (Brazilian Portuguese is), and at the time I didn't know English. My dad would help me with some of the texts sometimes when I'd ask but that aside, I actually played it by myself and through trial and error on the choices, I'd manage to make progress and even beat the game a few times. That coupled with my dad helping me with some of the texts even helped me learn some English. When I understood what you are supposed to do in the game then it became much easier to play by myself. It also helped that I knew some history, so to figure out some of the "quests" was made much easier by that fact. Regardless, I always found enjoyment in Mario is Missing.

    • @Hausbrauen
      @Hausbrauen Месяц назад +1

      Agreed and well said! No doubt game would be perfect for non-English speakers to learn from... another great reason to play it. Seems most criticizing this game today don't understand its audience at all, nor do they care to grasp the point and/or intended flow of the game, so they wrongfully dismiss is as "bad". I posted a similar comment about my experience... I'll repost here:
      Most who commonly tear this game apart these days forget it was designed to be a young kid's game (in addition to being educational), like Carmen Sandiego but I'd argue for an even slightly younger audience. I was about 7 when I played it, and I enjoyed it immensely at the time. It was a lot of reading for me at that age, and that's what made it so satisfying when I used the information I read myself to get to the next city. The somewhat mindless exploration of each city and jumping on familiar koopa troopas was just enough 'action' to be the perfect balance for little me.

      Exactly this. While this type of content is ultimately based on opinion at the end of the day, with those criticizing Mario is Missing it's often more a case of misunderstanding. It's designed to be a chiIdren's game where you're SUPPOSED to sit back and read a lot (both in learning about the world and reading maps), obtain information by jumping on the koopa troopas, then with basic reading comprehension you apply that knowledge and progress to the next area. I get that people expect a platformer and feel misled by the branding, but once you grasp what it's supposed to be it's not a bad game at all imo.

    9:17 You talked about the music chugging because of the graphics. The SNES has a completely independent sound processor with its own internal CPU and memory. The main CPU can grind to a halt and the SPU will keep playing music. The CPU only tells the SPU which tracks and sound effects to play (i.e. something like "play track 4", "stop music", "play sound effect 2"). The chugging music is likely just bad composition for a bad game. I guess it could be maybe too many sound effects being played at once, but in that case, I believe the SPU would just start cutting off sound effects, rather than chugging because of too much action on screen.

    So I looked up that Home Improvement game because the visual style looked very Euro-platformer to me, which seemed weird for a game based on an American sitcom. But I was wrong, turns out it was developed by former Activision founders Dan Kitchen and David Crane- yes, the creator of Pitfall and A Boy and His Blob was partly responsible for this! I couldn't believe it.

    Ah yes. Bebe's Kids. So i was 14 in 1998 when we bought a SNES at discount with Killer Instinct as the paxk in game. Because by this time people were dumping their SNES and Genesis systems in favor of those fancy schmanzy PS1s, N64s, and Saturns, I was able to score classic SNES games for $10-$15 at the local flea markets.
    And one day after I got off a part time job I had working weekends at a flea market, I went to buy some games. I scored Super Mario All Stars and Zombies Ate My Neighbors. As I was leaving, I saw Bebe's Kids at the bottom of the pile for $1. And I realized why. I also found it boring, monotonous, with horriblegame mechanics, and after watching the cartoon that it was based off of, puzzled as to why these kids were the heroes.

    Bebe's Kids was based off an animated movie, which I believe was based off a skit by a stand-up comedian.
    I actually rented Mario is Missing once. It came with a photocopied instruction manual. I could tell you a few things about how to play the game, but honestly, the game would be better if it were more compact. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego is an infinitely superior game to that one, and it's even in the same genre.
    Oh boy, Pit-Fighter. My older brother was a fan of that back in the arcades, so when he got the opportunity, he rented it on the SNES. And WOW was it a stinker! I was never a fan of the game, myself, but I saw him play both versions, and even I could see which one was better!
    And Rocketeer! I watched my brother play that game on the SNES, too, when he rented it! I never played it myself. Mainly because I watched my bro play it and I'm all, "nah, I'm good." My bro actually BEAT the game, btw; after the Bee Gee racing stages, you get to do MORE racing stages...as the Rocketeer. He's faster. Then the rest of the game is an uninspired platformer.
    BTW, considering you played Space Ace, you should check out Dragon's Lair on the SNES. It's also not good, but it's a bit better.

    I had Space Ace as a kid and I got exactly as far as you did - maybe less actually as I remember not being able to jump across to the platform despite it being an obvious jump. A complete waste of however much money my mum spent on it. I think that's a part of gaming during that era that many people forget: owning a game as a kid and it being so obtuse or difficult that it's only playable for a couple of minutes.
    Just a couple of other duffers I owned:
    Battletoads in Battlemaniacs (SNES) - 2.5 fantastic levels (cos I'm counting the bonus stage) and that's all there is. I managed to beat the hoverbike stage when I played it via emulation using save states only to find that it's all downhill from there. Did Rare just give up during development?
    Bart and The Beanstalk (GB) - I reached the second level exactly once. I tried it recently as an adult and gave up very quickly. Slow, precise gameplay with a very short area of visibility. A tedious, dull and frustrating game. Nice box art though (I guess that's part of why I chose it - doh!).

    • @GregsGameRoom
      @GregsGameRoom  2 месяца назад +2

      Oh, I thought Battlemaniacs was good? Guess I need to get further into it.

    • @mjbull6453
      @mjbull6453 2 месяца назад

      @@GregsGameRoom The first 2 levels are good - frankly they're some of the best beat-em-up action ever made - and the bonus stage has some welcome World of Illusion vibes, but the rest of the game (which is only 3 levels and a final boss, if I'm remembering correctly) is just a memory test of one-hit kills. Like I say, it's like Rare ran out of time or deliberately sabotaged their own game or something, it's so bizarre. Even when playing with save states, I couldn't beat it. I got stuck on the track level where you're being chased. No idea what I was doing wrong, although I'm sure the internet at the time said that just the small amount of lag created by emulation made that level next to impossible. I don't claim to know how true that is - and it was so long ago - but it certainly felt impossible at the time. Such a waste of an otherwise great beat-em-up.

    Paperboy 2 and Space Football are bad games but I love them due to nostalgia. (my mother bought them back in the day) I do like some of the songs in Space Football's soundtrack but when you take the nostalgia glasses off, it's obvious Paperboy 2 was poorly made but could have been better, and Space Football is just not a good game. Probably would have been better had it been made much later when technology had advanced. Also, when Rocket League got popular, my mind immediately went back to Space Football.

    Not sure if I agree about Mario is Missing. I feel like the only fair comparison for a game like that, is to something like Mario's Time Machine and similar edutainment games from around the same era. Chances are that if you didn't like Mario is Missing, you wouldn't like any of the others. To be fair to you, I would agree that Mario is Missing is a weaker game than Mario's Time Machine, because Mario's Time Machine has a surfing minigame and also lets you fill in the questions at any time.

    Rise of the robots is particularly funny because it was touted as being a revolutionary game with amazing artificial intelligence and a Brian May song! Let it comes out and there's absolutely no characters the enemies you do fight just March forward without any variation and the Brian May song was a 2-second loop of a track from one of his solo albums

    Ooof! So many... not so good memories. Where do I begin?
    Well, I remember renting American Gladiators back in the day, both the NES and SNES versions, and thank you for saying the NES version was better; the arcade style of it, like The Wall being gigantic and maze-like was way more tense than the SNES version. Also, the NES version of Assault has no breaks in the action as you dash towards the gun and try to fire at a MOVING TARGET that you must hit THREE TIMES instead of a stationary one you must hit once with a clunky aiming meter. As for the SNES version of The Wall, IIRC, you climb by mashing L and R, same thing for The Eliminator. For Human Cannonball, IIRC, the power meter, (the one of the left), must be at 75% and aim of course at 50%, you also need to tuck your legs before hitting the gladiator. (That was a rule in the actual show that was added in the second season after gladiators kept getting hurt from taking basically 30 MPH dropkicks!)
    Batman Forever... Yeah, it sucks forever!
    Bébé's Kids: This was based on an animated film which itself was based on a stand-up routine performed by the late Robin Harris. The routine basically involved Harris getting badgered into babysitting the children of a lady named Bébé who'd always end up annoying Harris. The kids' catchphrase was "We don't die, we _multiply!"_ The movie basically built on the routine into a proper film story. Sadly, Robin Harris died during the movie's production, so Faizon Love would end up voicing him in animation, though Harris still appears in live action at the beginning.
    Double Dragon V... Can you tell Technos Japan was in dire straights at the time? For one, they had no involvement in the game at all! As you already mentioned, it was Tradewest who had the license to the IP and were basically given free reign to have Leland Interactive Media make this mess. At least they made better games in the past like Ivan "Ironman" Sturat's Super Off Road and Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat, play those instead!
    Paperboy 2. Me and my cousin used to play that one a lot. Why it wasn't as good as the original, I don't know. At least it allows two players to duel in the obstacle course. The Genesis version is better, it more resembles the arcade version of the original game, and it even gives you a bunnyhop to let you jump back onto the sidewalk instead of having to use a driveway!
    Race Drivin'! The Game Boy version is much better. No, really! That version was developed by Argonaut, same people who made Star Fox. Nuff said!
    Revolution X: Why they tried porting that to SNES? And why no Super Scope or Justifier support? I'm sure the PS1 version is better.
    Space Ace... "Hmm hmm"? Hmm hmm... *HMM HMM!?*
    The Wizard of Oz... That game almost makes me wish the movie was never made, but the movie is a deserved classic so... Yeah, who thought the game was a good idea? Worst part, when Dorthy meets a new character, they only get ONE LIFE! And if they die, they're out of the game for good and you can't win even though it's not game over!

  • @JomasterTheSecond
