    Thanks for sharing Greg! Love these comparison videos. Hurt my heart hearing the issues with NES Double Dragon compared to the Arcade version bc I just remember how much fun my brother and I had with it.

      Fortunately most of the issues were rectified with DD2. Of course that one has a difficulty problem in the latter stages…

    Odyssey 2 and the 2600 were the only game systems in our house until the NES came along. We loved PLENTY of games on those two consoles but the NES really felt like we had arcade games in our house for the first time.

    This is where I started in 1986. I got my Nes and Master System a day apart on Christmas Eve and Christmas. I continued forward with the Sega Genesis in 1989, but it all started right here.
    Fun Fact- The "voice work" in Bad Dudes for the Nes was indeed bad. However, it actually didn't have to be that way at all. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the playback of the line "I'm bad!" The Nes actually plays it backwards which caused it to be horribly distorted. There is an indy developer today that has fixed the game and now "I'm bad!" can be heard in crystal clear speech on a stock Nes (no joke).

      The Double Dragon brother's Jimmy and Bimmy (I had to do it) had one girlfriend in the first game. Her name was Marian correct? Well, she got what she deserved in Double Dragon 2 after making the brothers kill each other for her in the arcade original (and Master System port). My question is did I get her name right? ;)

    You talk about limitations in games like the single player Double Dragon, that's looking back at it now with hindsight. Nobody thought that way back then, even some of the crappy games were great. Just the fact of seeing these games on TV blew people's minds, much like the 2600. Basically no one knew any better so these games were the best thing since sliced bread.

    • @GregsGameRoom
      @GregsGameRoom  9 месяцев назад

      Yeah, it was just accepted then. We knew the home hardware couldn't make 1:1 ports. Pac-Man for Atari 2600 seems to be the exception though...

    Actually Gauntlet on the NES is a port of Gauntlet II. It has most of the improved features of GII along with the temporary power ups. So Gauntlet II was ported twice to the NES. 😮

    • @GregsGameRoom
      @GregsGameRoom  9 месяцев назад +1

      Kinda. Nintendo versions often tried to offer more than the original arcade. Take Rygar for example.

    • @bildo1977
      @bildo1977 9 месяцев назад

      @@GregsGameRoom I know what you mean. But Gauntlet on the NES took a lot more from Gauntlet II arcade. The first Gauntlet arcade game didn’t have stun tiles, movable walls, poisonous food and potions, locked treasure chests, acid pools, super sorcerers, temporary power ups of repulsiveness, reflective shots, invulnerability, and ten super shots. It is missing temporary transportability, force fields, monsters that come at you in an indirect manner, thieves, and muggers. But it still owes much more to the Gauntlet II arcade game rather than the first arcade.
      You can even play as the same character! You couldn’t do that in the first Gauntlet arcade game.

    Namco wasnt too fond of nintendos licensing agreement so some of their games never made it over here or were unlicensed and released by Tengen instead. Namco in turn supported the PC engine and Mega Drive cause of their feud with nintendo.

    • @GregsGameRoom
      @GregsGameRoom  9 месяцев назад +1

      Nintendo’s licensing agreements were ridiculous, so I don’t blame Namco for being upset.

    I think the Japanese version of the original arcade Donkey Kong is better than the US version because you can play all four stages from the start...
    Also, the Japanese Famicom version of Rolling Thunder has better music thanks to the N163 mapper in the cartridge's PCB...

    Me and Bad Dudes on the NES are old enemies. Many years ago I was at a Woolworth’s in Normal, Illinois. There was a bargain bin filled with Nintendo games that were all $19.99. Dirty Harry was in there. So was Heavy Barrel. Instead of getting Heavy Barrel, my dumbass chose Bad Dudes. I would’ve loved Heavy Barrel on the NES back in the day. I know that it’s a flawed port, but it was a MUCH better effort than Bad Dudes! 🤢🤮
