Crispin is an interesting character on its own... I really tried to understand his point, but when he talks, he tends to go deep inside his mind, and at one point I wasn't even sure if he was still talking about his weird appearance on Letterman or media conspiracy?!.
Ultimately what i got is: YES he did the interview as a Rubin, a character from a movie nobody had seen yet, Letterman got angry when he tried to kick in front of him ..etc...etc.
And the reason why he did it, was because he saw him characterized as a weirdo in the media, he knew Letterman would mock him as he often insult some of his guests, so he decided to show up as a character to caught Letterman off guard! But then he got thrown in a cab for it.
As a result, when someone from the general media ask him about the incident, he doesn't confirm or deny he even was on the show! He usually throw whatever story to avoid talking about it, on Letterman or in any other interview (on mainstream media).
It's very confusing, so I could resume it as : he's a little bit paranoid and would rather show off as a weirdo in order to throw people off guard and it's all for comical effect!
The only problem is you need to get how "absurd comedy noire" work to even understand some or his interview. Maybe he should make an auto-biography to elaborate on his mindsets, he's quite a unique character!
He even wanted Georges McFly to become an even bigger loser at the end of Back to the future than he was at the beginning, instead of a stereotypical rich 80's douche (it was the 80's American Dream. Crispin wanted something else!)

That is what he's trying to get across in the interview though if you take the time to decipher it. I wouldn't say Glover is a moron, just very much in his head and ADHD. I have the same problem getting my thoughts across clearly and concisely aloud, often stumbling over my words and repeating the same things worded differently. that said he's not perfect and has his issues, but taking the time to try and understand what people are saying can pay off and give perspective and understand as seen by Marc-Andre's understanding of what Glover said after giving it some actual thought.

The whole Letterman thing is simple to explain. He was doing his character from the movie, literally as if that character was on TV for the first time, and pretending to be super nervous. Letterman introduced Crispin and instead Ed the character walked out. Letterman didn't know he was doing the character because Crispin didn't tell him. The audience knew they even yelled out "nice shoes" because the weird shoes and the kicking are in the plot of the movie. Fast forward and the movie is largely forgotten leaving the interview seeming even weirder because now everyone watching it is essentially like Letterman assuming that is the real Crispin. I don't think Crispin anticipated Letterman being quite that freaked out. If he planned the whole thing as a performance piece using the movie as only one level of it it's pretty genius but I still think Crispin didn't expect Letterman to be quite that weirded out. Letterman literally thought Crispin was either high, insane or both and once he did the kick (again actually in the movie) Letterman became genuinely afraid of him.

He'd rather chat with friends or fans on the street about it than anyone in media. Ok that was a little weird, but it's not Crispin's fault ... and come on man, the critique of the corporations for things like that It's obvious and fair, bcause it's real, nothing that u don't know ...

To anybody still wondering about this: Crispin Glover was promoting the film Rubin and Ed at the time. He dressed as the character Rubin, whom he plays in the film. His mannerisms and speech mirror the character. I don't know if Letterman was in on this or not, but that's what was going on. The film used to be on RUclips. It's worth a look. Really funny.

  • @aBanabis
    @aBanabis 4 года назад +12

I watched that interview for the first time just a little bit ago, and it looked like he was having a panic attack. The way he looked at Letterman, and then to the audience. Maybe he'd stumble with his words, and the audience would laugh, and he'd pause and look back at the audience. He was like a wild animal staring people down from inside an aquarium at the zoo. It wouldn't be hard to understand or empathize with someone who would be scared in a situation like this. It's possible he was playing a character, and it's also possible he was on acid, but I just think he was frightened and was having a panic attack. Maybe I can understand just because I can relate, and have had severe anxiety my entire life. That said, I don't blame David Letterman, nor the audience for their reactions. It's just the roll of the dice. It's what was in the cards, and it happened. All there is to it. Nobody is perfect.

........Crispin just explains what happened, nothing more, u know that Dave has always tried to mock some of his guests (and it's not a problem for Crispin to deal with it) but in this particular situation it didn't works well for nothing, look in that case there was an obvious lack of fair play in that television show, Crispin attended the show in "character" (promoting the movie "Rubin & Ed"), at the time, producers and Dave not clarify it during the interview and they left Crispin abandoned without a script adjusted and placed out of context so he tried quick to impro a crazy- funny behave ......... Ok that was a little weird, but it's not Crispin's fault .... the critique pointed on the corporations for things like that It's obvious and fair, bcause it's real! ...

He said he was on Letterman 3 times, he was actually on Letterman 4 times, twice in 1987, once in 1990, and once in 1992. In one of the interviews he talks about how him and this guy called Rubin who looked like him went and saw the summer solstice and that they liked pretending to be each other.
He also keeps bringing up his Johnny Carson interviews in the Letterman interviews kinda hinting at that he probably didn't have time to do the first Letterman interview and that it was actually his lookalike Rubin who went to the interview.
So it's one of two options
    1. The first interview on Letterman was his friend Rubin and the rest were him.
    2. He is bonker nuts.

I appreciate that. The world is a lot better when you can think for yourself. I did not come here for an explanation, I got it when I watched the Letterman appearances. My parents also insisted I think for myself and question authority. I just enjoy watching to see if other people get it.

It's like how, 10 years after Mel Gibson's DUI incident, he still occasionally gets questioned about it when he is promoting a film, even though it's like 10 years ago and has nothing to do with whatever film he is promoting. Once the media latches on to some dirt, they never let go.
