Great video. One important note - some Honeywell control valves use a left-handed thread on the gas line connection, so need to be careful when first disconnecting the line to avoid damaging the threads in the control valve.

I don't want to rip the valve off of the tank, but that's what's taking all the torque..
How do you affix the brass nut to the smooth gas pipe leading to pilot? It came separate from the assembly from the distributor. Your video shows it already attached.
A month ago, the water line braided hose sprang a good leak from the top of the gas hot water heater. I turned off the gas and water supplies. Replaced the bad supply line. Turned the gas and water back on. Successfully lit the pilot then adjusted the control valve for medium heat. The burner lit as expected. Then.... A month later, a major water leak occured. Due to living in a 35 yr old Mobil home here in Texas, the place has sunk into the clay to the point that it takes a really skinny person to attempt any repair needed. This caused us (mom 87 and myself 60, disabled and not skinny lol) to be without running water for 3 weeks. We are too poor living on social security to just call for a plumber. The PVC leak was inaccessible even to my 69 yr old skinny brother who came from Muskogee to help us. We had to cut thru the floor of mom's prized back porch of solid wood planks ... ugg. We got it fixed. Porch went back together just fine. We now had running water albeit cold only. Here's the current issue ( I know I'm long winded) When I try lighting the gas water heater.... The pilot goes out as the gas control valve attempts to light the burner. A completely yellow fire ball ignites with a woosh consuming the available oxygen and blowing out the pilot. Vents are clear. I know I have to get to the burner which lead me to Googling the issue. I was pleased to see the assembly is available.... But I wanted to see a walk thru of the procedure, thus, I turned to RUclips. Lo and behold (cue angelic music) there you are Roger... Like God sent "Video Plumber advice on-demand" who else but a fellow Texan rides in to save the day like the Lone Ranger. I just replaced both the control valve and burner assembly on a Bradford White propane water heater. The reason I had to replace the burner assembly was because I did not know the burner tube nut has left hand thread so the propane model.
Roger, you are the man! Thank you for these helpful and detailed tutorials. I have a question: our water heater pilot won’t doesn’t stay lit. I’m able to keep it on long enough to get the burner going, but it goes out between 10-15 minutes later. I replaced the thermocouple and it had no effect. The flame has a lot of yellow/orange in it. Do you think I need to change out the burner assembly or is this a thermostat problem? If the latter, is that also an easy DIY project?
Question: are The AO Smith hit water heaters model GCV 50 301...serial number starting with 1344 outdated? Been looking for the burner assembly...can't find them anywhere.
Whats up bud, what stores carry these burner assembly? Any stores or websites i should look in? Are they Universal? I have a 2009 GE gas water heater and i m having a hard time finding the burner assembly kit? Thank you for your videos!
Great video with good explanation even for novices. Here is a side question Roger, which I have a hard time finding answers. Most appliances (Furnaces, stoves etc) are easily convertible from NG to LP. Why water heater manufactures discourage or even prohibit to convert water heaters from NG to LP even though some manufacture both furnaces and water heaters (e.g Rheem). What is the reasoning behind not converting water heaters? Thanks
One thing that wasn't mentioned is the pilot tube on the new burner often doesn't have the nipple attached. Might add a note on how to add the nipple to the new burner's pilot tube.
Hi Roger, I love your video and Channellock SHOULD be a sponsor! thanks for the 90 degrees and parallel line, good to know, and the white right-left red, it only kind of rhymes just like ghrammer those commas only "kind of" belong there! I subscribed and can't wait till the next video.
I wanted to ask, today I replaced the thermopile on my state select water heater. I brushed the inside and cleaned bottom ring filter, and vacuumed inside burner assembly BUT , when I removed the burner assembly the gasket was totally cracked and brittle. I resumed install and have it running without a gasket, you can feel some warmth but it’s not dramatic at all. A master plumber stated the gasket isn’t necessary if you don’t have one on hand and back in the day they used to be open just don’t store any flammable around the area. my gasket is special order. Is it a total need to have a burner assembly door gasket?
I'm wanting to convert same ring burner system to lpg. Is there just one orifice to change or do I need a suitable ring? Would the regulator need adjusting or replacing also?
Okay. I just did mine and the burner had to be pried out. It would not budge with just my fingers and didn't move at all after taking the screws out. On my tank their is also a thick red gasket behind the burner plate where the screws are and I don't see that in your video. What's going on? Lol
Thanks. I have an issue you haven't covered in any of your videos. I've had a faint smell of gas in my utility room since I purchased my home almost a year ago. I've bubble tested every single gas connection in the home several times (including lines for pinhole leaks), but never found the leak. I finally purchased an electronic combustible gas leak detector and found there is gas leaking at my AO Smith gas water heater 's vent, and it's peaking the meter! This is obviously why I was unable to detect the leak with the bubble method. It's important to note that the burner has a strong clean blue pilot flame and combustion looks ~normal when the water heater turns on. No error codes on control valve. The vent pipe appears to be drafting normally with smoke tests, both with utility room door closed and open. The air intake screen at bottom of water heater is clean and unobstructed. My question is why am I detecting a gas leak at the water heater vent if the pilot is lit and it's burning and drafting properly? Is it possible the burner assembly has a leak somewhere? I'm concerned as there is clearly gas detected at the vent and I don't see how this is possible unless the burner assembly is leaking somehow? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Have you ever experienced this?
