The question is, how many of those graves are for finger creepers, and how many are just people buried on holy ground the way churches are usually used?
I think the purpose of this quest was that The Fingers aren't divine emmissaries but another monster that Marika bastardized for the purposes of keeping the Golden Order looking divine. Killing the Finger Mother actually stopped him from exposing this.
Ymir wasnted to become a mother for Fingers. Metyr according to him is broken and failed her children. Iirc he says that everyone deserves a good mother. So yeah, he sends us to kill Metyr- the failed mother, so he can replace her. It seems that Ymir lost his child named Yuri and that loss damaged him so badly that after learning the trutch about Metyr he decided to become parent of the fingers. Rejected kids and a parent who suffers after loosing a child.

Not sure if im reading it too much but the grave is there before we talk to him and readable at a time we know Fingercreeper Yuri is alive. I think he had a real son that died a long time ago and is granted the ability to birth the fingercreepers and thus a new son given to him by the greater will which he projects onto as his dead son. We know he can birth fingercreepers prior to us fighting Metyr because of his robe description which, unaltered, says it hides the writhing beneath or something of that nature. My confusion is that it seems like fingercreeper Yuri then dies after part 2 of the quest but i dont know what the catalyst for this is, presumably just because Ymir isnt meant to be doing this or because of the obvious baby tampering the greater will likes to do. I think that once we kill Metyr and he can harness her power he's just completely broken by his own loss, ambition, and the power/knowledge of an outer god that he just goes crazy. similar to Sellen who also became a monster after getting too close to outer knowledge
The Greater Will doesn't do a single thing. It is in no way involved with the current events of Elden Ring. It takes thousands... if not tens of thousands... of years for the Greater Will to even *receive* a question from a Two Finger. Much less reply. Metyr the Mother of Fingers was still waiting for a response after all this time. Since it first ARRIVED. It has been waiting. The Greater Will is way off in space doing eldritch horror things. Probably sleeping. I don't think it cares, honestly. I think that's the great cosmic joke. People attribute so much to this entity, blame it for all their problems, or look to it for guidance... but it lost interest and left a long time ago.

It is his son grave. He considered the fingetcreeper as his replacement son. So he talked to thr dead fingercreeper on his own son grave and probably buried the fingercreeper somewhere else.
So if you go through the secret passage early, and beat the invader and get the katanna, does that mean you can also still finish the qustline and get the armour by giving the grace iris later on...?? Or is that no longer possible once you go into that passage early?
It's a different person (Anna) who drops the claws, you can find her body made into a puppet at the very top of the tower where you get the glinstone cannon, I had to jump down from the Shaman village
I really wanted Ymir to succeed in becoming a surrogate finger mother. I genuinely don’t understand why he attacks us after sending us down there. Perhaps there are further answers in the game files.
