I remember the first time that I heard Eruption. It was a seismic shift in my musical mind. It was like going from black and white to Technicolor in 3-D instantly. Never looked back.
I love how humble he is, even though he can play that song in his sleep, I need to know celebrities in training will bow down to anything. that makes their music 10x better to me, because I know they are humble and will accept how I treat them no matter how poorly
There’s something about eddies attack, both the fretted and picking hands, that’s as precise as a robot but as emotional as the blues masters who made a living playing one bent note. It gets me every time.
A channel for sunset sound interviewed a woman who worked there during the recording. She said the whole thing was just an impromptu run he did when the rest of the band was setting up. He hadn’t really thought of it as a cut until afterward. Seems like Eruption was originally just his version of an ‘Etude’, something that he would do to keep his fingers nimble. 🤯
Even now, 46 years later - actually 47 years later because Eruption was recorded in Sept of 1977 - that is just as amazing as it was the first time I heard it. In fact, more so now because after 1,000s of listens, I can hear all of the nuances that I just wasn’t capable of hearing back then because I wasn’t a good enough player to understand it. Just phenomenal, in every respect. It changed the instrument completely.

I don't even like Eruption, but every time you hear that there's some unexplainable feeling like you're witnessing something special. It's not the notes he plays, the tapping or stuff, it's the way he plays them that has something magical to it.
I had just started playing guitar when that album came out and I had no idea that one tapping part was a guitar. I thought they transitioned over to keyboards.

John Jorgenson. How do i know? Alex often played and hung out at his club the Orbit Room. He would hang with everyone. He tried my autograph heavy ASAT and got excited finding the Hellecasters autographs.
@@martydibergi5228 Alex is also a Tool fan so let's get Alex and Adam Jones together with Rick...
THAT!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
October of 1977! That's the exact month I was born. Somehow, that makes me feel young! 😂
The year I was born...crazy!!
The way you can hear the guitar dump all the way down to a literal screech on the overhead is crazy!!! I’m sure there’s so much that was taken out of the final, I’d love to hear the legit original with any buzzing or outer sounds not taken out of the
Every 12 yr old during that wicked solo was getting ready to rock out like no one was looking
Holy crap that is awesome recording. Listening to this with head phones never gets old.
Love evh, he's on that top echelon with very few other musicians throughout history. Just the innovation alone and mickeying his amps and guitars like a mad scientist. What a character.
EDDIE FAWKIN MELTING FACES OFF!!!
Just listened to this album today again never gets old
I was 13 when i first heard that. It's still the best sound i have ever heard. RIP King Edward.
I honestly got choked up when watching this entire video when they listened to Edward with such reverence. People forget what a bomb it was when Van Halen one came out for guitar players. No one has had such an impact since. Hendrix and Edward completely changed how electric guitar was played.
It gets me all choked up and emotional
I agree with you but no one who was around back then will ever forget it it's the young new kids who need to find it in discover the origin of what people have been playing now since 1978 on guitars and Guitar Centers all over the planet
Eddie announcing the changing of the guard in the world of guitars.
Literally have heard this since i was a kid and even then as now it gives me the goosebumps every single time without fail
I watched this several times. It is fun to turn the volume down and just watch your faces. All three of you are such music fans. I am so glad to be able to learn from you and just chill out and listen sometimes.
RIP Eddie.
Eternal face melter.
I don't even like Eruption, but every time you hear that there's some unexplainable feeling like you're witnessing something special. It's not the notes he plays, the tapping or stuff, it's the way he plays them that has something magical to it.
it's the feeling that something must burst into flame , that there is no exit except a cataclymic...
Sounds like you like eruption
Not just masterful shredding but a masterful composition.
Lol
it's a warm up of classical sections that already exist... sorry mang.
RIP Eddy, one of the best guitarists on the planet.
There are very few songs in history that every time you hear it, feels like the first time.
Those guys are torch bearers :)
I had just started playing guitar when that album came out and I had no idea that one tapping part was a guitar. I thought they transitioned over to keyboards.
I started because of this. I knew it was guitar but I had zero idea how he did it. I told my mom "I want to learn how to do that" so 10 year old me started taking lessons.
@@gneric85 that’s the thing I had no idea how anybody could possibly do that on Guitar. And since I had already started playing, I had a pretty good idea of how things worked. I was hearing two different things going on at the same time and it didn’t make sense.
King Edward. Hats off to the man who changed guitar forever. RIP Eddie. 😢
the tapping section is the heaven of every guitarist.
King Edward ... they'll never be another!!
Love it. This one EVH solo gets the same reaction from every guitarist every time. And the better the guitarist, the most comprehension and appreciation is evident!
Eddie was a one of a kind genius is not enough just a all round BRILLIANT guitarist AND Songwriter! RIP Ed!
Fun Fact: Dimebag Darrell won the Texas Guitar Championship so many times playing this solo, that they didn't allow him to compete anymore and made him a judge.
Crazy how a 40 year old guitar solo can still be mindblowing after all these years.
This stuff gets so much better with age….great music
I remember back in 1985 when I first heard it on a set of headphones on Sony Walkman and was blown away!
I had a litle red Sony Walkman and its batteries life NEVER DIED I heard sooo much Rock'n'Roll on that lil red sony including plenty of Van Halen...
This and the Beat It solo. Dude just sends it.
greatest guitar solo in history and it was just a warm-up he came up with off the top of his head while they were getting ready to record.
I will never forget jumping in my buddies Torino to go to school, he says check this out.🤯🤯🤯Just nothing like it
Steve lukather, in his book, said before recording his solo for Hold The Line, they were playing that for the first time and Steve said it blew them away, and it inspired him to really bring it for his solo
I will never, ever forget the day I heard this for the first time.
"Guitar wanking!" That's what a non-musician friend of mine would refer to this sort of thing as whenever he'd come to our gigs 🤣
We've all seen guys play the exact same notes at the same speed and not have the same impact. Edwards magic was his timing and swing. That's the language of the soul.
There faces are priceless lmao
The legend of Edward will live on for many many years rip sir you earned it
Still fresh and sounds amazing, rip EVH
Til this day, that solo is still mind blowing!!!! 🤯
Released 45 years ago this year and what a show it was, one I will never forget rip Eddie thank you for the memories brother.
These guys here are phenomenal guitar players and as it is ending the guy says, "You gotta be freaking kidding me..."
EVH is the Michael Jordan of Rock n Roll guitar. Like MJ, Eddie blew people away. Shockingly great. Everyone wanted to be just like him.
