- My "Dead Mall" video tour with narration. By the way, the area I called the West Wing is really the East Wing and vice versa. Well, there it is. Enjoy!
Here is the original video:

I was 10 years old when I remembered Midway Mall opened in 1966. I'm 60 years old now, lived in Ohio back then since then lived in Florida now for 46 years now. Next visit to Ohio I would like to check Midway Mall out. Enjoyed the video.
Seems fitting to me that the same thing that happened to all the old down town stores when the Malls took over, is happening everywhere to the Malls. Thank Amazon for that.
love this. grew up in elyria and graduated in76. moved to Florida in80 after leaving for the army after graduation and returning in79.
We used to go to Midway Mall all the time when I was a kid. I remember the oil-string fountain very well, along with the Higbee's and its two awesome restaurants, the Gazebo and the Attic. Very sad that now it's just a walled-off memory. I don't think shopping malls are coming back, there's too much trouble with crime and most stores make more money with their online stores than a brick-and-mortar store could hope to make. It's the end of an era, but at least I can remember the glory days when anyone under 25 went to the mall every single weekend. It was a great time.
I remember the Gazebo but not the Attic.
I use to work at Camelot Music and Video in the early 80s.
There was a pizza place and Hot Sams Pretzels.
There was a restaurant next to Woolworths called Hostess House, I think.
On the corner was Fosters Ice cream.
Can’t forget about my favorite Spencer’s gift shop.
I would go to Aladdin’s Castle and buy sacks of tokens to play the lasers games.
Aladdin’s was in the area before the expansion.
Always going to the Twin Cinema.
I remember the hot wax fountain too.
Live in San Diego now.
Special time back then.
You probably rang me out then. I frequently shopped at Camelot in the eary 80's.
The restaurant next to Woolworth's was Harvest House. I may have eaten there. I know I ate at the Olive Branch next to Camelot, the Friendly's across from there and at the Woolworths Lunch Counter. We also ate at The Attic in Higbee's. There were also great places for snacks like Baskin Robbins (near Higbee's), The Original Cookie Company (next to the movie theater) and Hot Sams (I don't remember where it was).
I wanna go to this mall sooooo bad!!! You have totally got me fascinated with this place!!! Whenever I go from Chicago To Maine on the greyhound bus, we always stop in Elyria, and i find the whole town fascinating and I would love to go exploring in the downtown area for a whole day. When I get my car fixed, I am so going to check out this mall and spend at least a day in there! This place looks sooo awesome!!
Ok thanks! I will!
Awesome! I can't wait to check it out! I was just in Elyria the other day. The greyhound bus went through there. I like that street downtown I think, where there's a furniture store called "Shane furniture". I'm dying to walk around on that street.
Wow! This place was so crowded in the 80's. This is sad. This is my hometown but I left in 1988.
Nice vid. I'm glad security didn't tell you to stop taping ; ) I've recorded a little bit of Midway Mall for posterities sake and to show people who used to live here. One of the cell phone kiosk workers got security (they didn't have anything to do anyway ironically lol) I got out of there before they showed up but I saw them walking to where I was. I was also taking pics of my friend's kids' artwork show is when the kid saw me. I walk thru the Mall once in a while. I still think it's a nice mall. It's brighter than Great Northern imho. It is sad how many stores close. I liked the gazebo food court in Higbees. I want to try to find a pic of that. My sister worked at Macy's for a couple years. Seems Mall's were a 70's - 80's thing that ironically put downtown's out of business. Taco Bell was always busy. They raised their rent. So they left. Nice move. They always say it'll be bought by the Cleveland Clinic. One day it probably will. FirstMerit bank is closing next to it. they said too many stores and restaurants are closed and their lease was up. Another irony is Elyria finally got rid of the bridge and made it easier to access the area. And Arby's with the classic sign closed overnight and got demolished not too long ago. If Best Buy moves out they're in trouble. I'm surprised Sears is til open. Old money keeps it alive imho. Penny's keeps trying different approaches but I'm not always sure about it.
I used to deliver The Chronicle to some of the stores in the mall in the 60's.
My hometown .. gosh this is embarrassing ...
Dee McNeal I loved this place as a child.
I remember going here when I younger. I used to stay at the holiday inn (now Ramada) and I used to go in this. this was on my way up to Michigan

When Westfield bought the mall, they seemed to make a point to do some "pruning" of stores that were less franchised and presentable. They brought in some big names to replace them and at least for the stretch of time that they were in charge, the mall ran reasonably well, though with a healthy dose of pretense. When Westfield sold the mall back, a dilemma occurred. An owner less established than Westfield had little chance of sustaining the plethora of big names then contained within the mall, and the fallback of long-running, respectable non-chain stores had been ousted by Westfield in their homogenizing process. The chain stores that found it profitable to stay did, and the ones that did not either found an empty storefront in their wake, or a new startup business that ranged from incompetent to incredibly shady. The mall still retains a diverse selection of specialty stores, but it is no longer particularly comprehensive. There are no music or game stores within the mall, which instead resorts to a Best Buy which essentially serves as an independent store with a mall back-entrance. There are no book stores, either. Instead, interesting but short-lived niche businesses, such as airbrush parlors, traditional African garment stores, surprisingly barren game trade-in centers, and a variety of women's clothes stores appealing to particular minorities, dot what were once key locations within the mall. The food court struggles to keep consistent staples, such as Dairy Queen, or a pizza or sub place. It has basically become a revolving door at this point, with only a Taco Bell remaining constant. It is not a bad mall, but I often find the extra miles required to get to Great Northern Mall to be more than worth it, in context.
I moved like a year ago from lorain and I remember going there as a kid... it was fairly popular and it was pretty. it had a nice little section with kids play stuff and it was so fun... it was my dads favorite section because the pretzel place was there. its a shame because everything was nicely laid out but now everything is shutting down... what a shame to see my whole childhood get abandoned..
Great video, the narration is excellent. Never been there but feel as though I have an informative history of this mall's background.
I left this area in 83, steel mill in decline, Ford motor on both sides of town going, going, gone...looked bad then, looks worse now. I joined the Army because I couldn't buy a job in Lorain or any surrounding areas. I wouldn't be surprised to see it all locked up and torn down one day. This is how America will be great again, I suppose. Living the good life in Virginia since 1990.
Watching this video being a mall walker almost a DECADE later and were down to 9 stores 1 food court restaurant 1 bakery where the mrs fields cookies was, and dunhams and johnny ks sad…
fazio's became rini rego
so sad..when i was a kid i lived on a farm and we never went anywhere usually. but now and then mom would take us here...and it was like a trip to disneyworld! sad to see its decline.
I lived on Furnish street in Elyria and sometimes would take a bus to the mall. It is sad to see what has become of the mall as well as the rest of the community.
I just want to see old photos or store listing from 1996-2000 I just can't remember all the stores.. I remember Suncoast pretzel time and the old photography place
And now Macy's is closing :( Don't forget Aladin's Castle used to be in the south wing. spent many money there once upon a time. Someone left a funny comment on the Chronicle's facebook page: "If the Teriyaki place closes, we riot!"
Chris I know this is like 8 years later LOL but I was just curious where Perry’s glow putt was down by Macys what was that next to it on the left I can’t remember it
Sorry but I can't remember it either. I know that space was originally Wilson's Leather. I have the last printed directory. It shows Perry's in the old DEB next to Penney's. The store next to the old spot was already vacant
someone on here please tell me where I can find all the old stores that used to be in here can't find it anywhere I'm talking from 1996-2008
Now it's very hard to get the mall's directory from its Westfield Years (2002-2006) but here is an archived online directory from 2007, right before it hit the fan. web.archive.org/web/20070101232252/www.midwaymallshopping.com/
is that mall closed
now deader then ever thanks macy
I worked at Higbee's back in 79. I graduated in 1980 and moved away from Elyria soon after. I don't miss Elyria at all but it would be nice to see the mall and surrounding community doing well. Unfortunately, I don't see the economy picking up in that area any time soon. I currently live in California and I love it! Good luck to everyone living in Elyria. If you are tired of the snow and a poor economy, try San Diego!
T Hurst things are looking up here. A lot of people dedicated to their community
Great, I'm glad to hear Elyria is coming back. I haven't been back in Elyria in quite some time but I still would like to see the community as well as the entire Ohio state do well. Yes' I still cheer for the Browns, Indians and of course the Cavs. I don't think I will ever see Elyria again but I wish the community the best.
Cierra McClure I was born and raised in Elyria moved years ago but have family and friends there still or nearby. It's a big shit hole! Used to be decent but started to go down hill in the 90s. Nothing but crime and drugs.
Yes, I have heard Elyria is a not a great place to be anymore.
+T Hurst I live in Elyria. You're not missing anything. The Mayor is an IDIOT. She is driving this place further into the ground every day. Believe it or not She & the City Council in their great wisdom, gave Cascade Park over to Lorain County Metro Parks. The main source of income for the City of Elyria is recycling, reclaimed materials from demolished repossessed homes & real estate. Another thing, if You come to visit. Make sure your car has good shocks & a spare tire. Your going to need them, for the chuck holes. As far as businesses go, they're going to the surrounding communities.
Add a Starbucks , hopefully that will work.
Cool video
steubenville mall would be a good one too review
when the city lets major employers relocate in the adjoining cities, thats a problem.and this is a result.
Worst camera ever
