Not necessarily. Shikamaru had devised a plan using just the 3 of them. But since Kakashi came along, he revised to plan to make it easier for them. I think it can be assumed that Shikamaru was much more careful in his initial plan since they still didn’t know Kakuzu’s full abilities

And now I'll make spoilers for the ending just in case Even more so, in the end, both him and Sasuke decided to use a "close" combat variation of their jutsus and that's basically the reason why the two of them lost their arms, the recoild damage was so big that their bodies were literally unable to resist it's own power.

Kabuto couldn’t even recover Hidan’s body, regardless of if he was dead or alive. The deer from the Nara clan are keeping an eye on that area 24/7.
