Left Behind isn't a reference to Riley, it is a reference to Ellie. Much of Ellie's character is survivors guilt. She survives while Riley does not, even then they agreed to "loose their minds together". It is the reason she has such a big attachment issue, because she keeps being left behind either because people physically leaves or dies. She is somewhat waiting for her turn, she feels guilty about surviving and is scared about constantly being alone.

The way they pulled that scene off was magic, and they finally show why Joel would kill EVERYONE to save her and keep her with him. It's actually sad she gets mad at him for it, Joel's love and loyalty to Ellie is sealed in that one moment, and why he goes berserker when he finds out she will die during the surgery. That's the type of love you don't play with, a father and daughter is an insane love, but when a man chooses to love someone as a daughter, that love is a death sentence for anyone who crosses it the wrong way.
Nah man, after this episode, I’m so sold on this show. At first, I’m being honest I was a little apprehensive about the casting but Bella really IS Ellie… played the game the first time during some crazy life times, so that story always had a place in my heart and the show really be making me feel like I’m back then again or something
Also, if season two is doomed, I sort of understand given the source material isn’t the “best”. But honestly, just having the first game on screen like this is enough to make me happy
Fun fact I just learned, in the American Girl Store, Nanea was the doll that you saw right before the infected guy. Funny thing is, Nanea was released a whole 14 years after outbreak day. Just a tiny plot hole.
Anyone else notice this zombie looked a bit different? The stalkers tend to only have one eye as the fungus begins to eat it’s way out. This zombie looked more “wrapped” in fungus
The Joel injury was my biggest gripe with the game. Dude fell off a second floor balcony where his head definitely would’ve hit the ground and was impaled by a piece of rebar! And the game didn’t show that he got stitched up to stop the bleeding. The show did make it make it more realistic.
Yeah, the use of the song beautifully sums up everything happening emotionally between them in that moment while also foreshadowing the coming danger. Great use of music in subtlety framing a scene
Even I knowing what’s going to happen, I could enjoy the episode with peace, I was on the edge of the seat the whole time at the mall. I need to watch again knowing the timing. Every episode is a killer!

@Mina Frota Do you not understand that the show mirrors the video game. I actually liked seeing the mall in ruins and this showing how life once was and basically the breakdown of society. Makes me think of our near future the way these brick and mortar stores are closing their doors in mass!! Also, this scene reminds me of the show Alice in Borderland
Just finished watching the episode, and the whole time after I was just wondering “Where’s the Emergency Awesome video?” Happy it’s out now, and thanks for these videos!
Ellie needed for this to happen. She was a bit selfish saying she was fucked if he died. She also needed to protect him too so their relationship had balance. They protect each other like family. I got to your back you got mine.
The game was even crazier. Joel falls 20 feet and gets impaled by a steel pipe...and somehow gets patched up by a 14 year old girl with some dirty rags lmao.
Another strong episode! I loved seeing the arcade. That's how we used to do it back in the 80s and 90s. I've not seen a good arcade in a lot of years until 2 weeks ago. And then I see another one tonight in Last of Us.

Ellie portraying fear when being attacked seemed so genuine! Bella is killling it but I know she’s a grown woman playing a child and I always feel actors do too much like nah 14 year olds don’t act like that haha!
This show is so amazing in every aspect. As someone who didn’t play the game but knows of it, Charlie you do a perfect job explaining it. I’ll never understand how you do it and so quickly. You’re the GOAT 🐐
The acting was good from both of them but I missed Joel too. Im not invested in Riley and Ellie like I am with Joel and Ellie. I kept wondering if he was ok throughout the show.
I just noticed that Ellie and Eli held hands when they agreed to wait it out and it’s just like what Ellie did with Joel before she still stitched him up!
I commented last week when I saw they were going to the mall in the next episode, that when Ellie told Joel about her friend knowing everything about MK II and Mileena's fatalty, I was so hoping Riley would pull it off. I was not let down
The flashback wasn't a year before the first episode, It was literally right before it because Marlene finds Elle after they get bitten and then puts her in that room that she's in the beginning of episode 1. I'm curious if you played the game?
I was waiting for them to show Riley turn, but I'm glad that they didn't because it was way more impactful. Im a little bit worried as theres only two more episodes left as it seems like theres at least 4 episodes worth of storytelling, but I guess we will see. ALSO, I am so frigging excited for Mando season 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another very good breakdown Charlie. I felt like they could have covered the mall stuff in half the time and gotten on with it a bit...I kept thinking there's only two episodes left - how are they going to cover whats coming without rushing it.
10/10 loved Storm Reid as Riley, loved Riley and Ellie’s chemistry, loved the references/music from the game. All around very reminiscent of the DLC 💯💯
Imagine at the end of part 3 Ellie actually takes a small amount of people to Mars & they start everything anew. How this might go down is Ellie finds a secret NASA base where they actually almost finished making a space shuttle but got attacked by the infected.
As always excellent breakdown coverage Charlie. I do have one, small correction tho. Growing up as a die hard Cure fan, I had to say something. The song on the carousel was "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure. I recognized it within the very first few notes. Keep up the great work my friend, cheers!
Great video! I would like to point out, and possibly correct that the Ellie backstory/ flashbacks with Riley are only ment to be 3 weeks or so before she meets Joel. Not a year. This is because when they first find out she is infected using the device from the fedra soldier, Ellie rolls up her sleeve and tells them to not freak out, that it’s been 3 weeks and she still hasn’t turned. So according to that, the night she was bit was 3 weeks before, therefore the night she was with Riley was 3 weeks before. Question: if the flashback is 3 weeks before, they don’t know yet there that Ellie is immune cause in the flashback that is her first time getting bitten. So why does he say at around 11:30 when he’s talking about Marlene that “Ellie doesn’t know Marlene, but Marlene definitely knows Ellie” if she isn’t bitten yet and therefore shows her immunity?
The song from the carousel is a cover of Just Like Heaven from The Cure. If you add the lyrics from the song, the carousel ride ends at the lyric which says, “Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you, that I'm in love with you?”
When Captain Kwong first places the keys down on the table when making the offer, a Naughty Dog logo keychain is on the keys. Easily missed but I felt that was it's place. best not to linger as I felt somewhat of an immersion break from just the split-second it was shown (but that's just me).
The Carousel song is an instrumental of “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure. “Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick the one that made me scream she said… The one that made me laugh she said… Threw her arms around my neck…. Show me how you do it, and I promise that, I’ll run away with you.”
The Pearl Jam song is actually titled "All or None" (not "for"). It's on their 2002 album, Riot Act, the last Pearl Jam album before the Apocalypse! ;)
I don't think she's 13 here. She's wearing the same clothes and has the same wound she got in this episode when we first see her and it's only been 10 days since the Fireflies had her captive. And as Riley mentioned, she was supposed to leave the very next day so it is likely that the fireflies arrived in the morning or so.
Charlie, awesome breakdown as usual. Can't thank you enough for all your videos. I believe the music during the merry-go-round is a Cure song - Friday I'm in Love, if I'm hearing that right. Looking forward to your next video!
another good video Charlie, but I think you misunderstood the meaning of the ‘left behind’ title. it’s Ellie who is left behind, following the death of her mother, of Riley, and now potentially Joel… remember her line, ‘everyone I’ve ever cared about has either died or left me…’
Man, i think this story is necessary but I don’t know I I liked how they did it as far as pacing. Performances were great though. Each episode proves how good Bella is.
I thought maybe the playing of "Take on me" when they got into the mall might've been a call back to the first episode when the codes came in and 80's music meant trouble.
Honestly, Pacing felt off for this one. Wish they would have just released this episode as a solo episode or make it a little longer and call it a "movie" and release it a couples months from now as a solo project. Similar to how the DLC happened.
I get they have to change some things from the game but when Ellie is in the arcade the machines don't work so she closes her eyes and imagines she's playing. Like when Joel takes her to the museum in part 2 and she imagines she's in space. I thought they should have kept that in.
Its astonishing, heartbreaking and pointless the amount of abuse Bella Ramsey gets online for the way she 'looks'. All I see is an intelligent, witty, talented young lady with one hell of a future ahead of her.
Hearing “Just Like Heaven” when they’re on the carousel is so fitting for the lyrics and feelings between them both. Ellie has been through so much hell as just a child, and seeing her grow up through hell, it had to be her only sense of “heaven”. The little nods in the show to previous episodes is cool too, to see that Riley would’ve been a type of guard over Tess and Joel (remember when Joel asked for work they told him all they had was sewage detail and he took it) is crazy. She understood that FEDRA although they kept people boarded up, they burned bodies, made people forced to do jobs they couldn’t do or didn’t want to, executed people for leaving a qz or breaking curfew… it makes you not feel so bad about the fireflies mission. However it is crazy to me, Riley asked Marlene about Ellie going with her, she told her no, she kept Ellie in the camp for her mom, but sent Ellie with Joel and Tess. Marlene had links to FEDRA, and was a firefly. Maybe she had plans to find the cure, and have FEDRA and Fireflies “together” and her reign over everything since she’d be in both. She’s also a master manipulator and gets her way by force. So it wouldn’t surprise me that Marlene has a dictator mentality, somewhat similar to Kathleen.
I am just loving this show so much. However, this episode was a bit boring in terms of the amount of time they used up with the Riley story. They could have done that story in half the time and spent more time with Joel and Ellie. We didn't even get that long with Joel and Tommy in the 2003 portion of episode one as most of that time was dedicated to Sarah. We didn't get any of Joel's backstory until we got into the show, but then we've not had anything really from Joel's point-of-view. I really wasn't wowed by this episode as much as the first six as the story to me IS Joel and Ellie.
I believe they're adapting the game faithfully. Left Behind is a 2.5 hour DLC and this sticks pretty close to it. The games have never shown Joel's backstory (I would love to see his time as a hunter with Tommy too).
While Ellie would make a good leader I don't think it'll be in her fate to survive past the 3rd game and who knows how much time could pass in the world between sequels but I don't think they'll go that far, I think they'll pretty much pick up where it left off and Ellie will end up sacrificing herself to try and make a cure. It would be kinda fitting if she did. I have thoughts passed that too but they are more spoilery
How is no one talking about Ah ha take one me playing in the background. This would be foreshadowing when Ellie sings it. I hope they do this in the series next season or season 3!

Spoilers!!!
@@mariebourgot4949 lol yeah, this pleb doesnt know about warning others about spoilers
Well Ellie did tell Joel it wasn't her first time using a gun so I took that and this as her having to shoot Riley when she turned. Tragic all around.
@@SouthBayLA1310 Ellie *is* immune... and the show tells us that not Charlie....
@@SouthBayLA1310 he said Ellie doesn’t know she’s immune and Riley doesn’t know she’s immune, as in Riley does not know that Ellie is immune
The little nods to part 2 with take on me ,and Ellie mentioning dinosaurs were my favorite was cool.
The similitude of the show and the game is unreal! I bought both games after I started watching this show. It's an amazing story!
You missed out
Anyone else notice this zombie looked a bit different? The stalkers tend to only have one eye as the fungus begins to eat it’s way out. This zombie looked more “wrapped” in fungus
I think it's supposed to be much further along in its development.
There were stalkers in part 2 that were growing into walls because they had been there so long.
The Joel injury was my biggest gripe with the game. Dude fell off a second floor balcony where his head definitely would’ve hit the ground and was impaled by a piece of rebar! And the game didn’t show that he got stitched up to stop the bleeding. The show did make it make it more realistic.
Love that the Carousel song was The Cure- Just Like Heaven (80’s means trouble!)
Yeah, the use of the song beautifully sums up everything happening emotionally between them in that moment while also foreshadowing the coming danger. Great use of music in subtlety framing a scene
I had to rewind just to make sure I wasn't imagining the song there 😭
I was so happy to hear it, I think it’s one of my favorite and relatable love songs.
Even I knowing what’s going to happen, I could enjoy the episode with peace, I was on the edge of the seat the whole time at the mall. I need to watch again knowing the timing. Every episode is a killer!
Thanks for never outsourcing/delegating the narration/voice-over of your videos. After all these years, your voice being a constant in breaking down our escapist content is a familiar comfort.
Worst episode ever. Almost an hour of a teenage lesbian love drama. Watching them explore a mall. So boring! Shame on you HBO for slipping in this hour which is like a totally different show. And to make it worse, it's all just a flashback and predictable what happens. Just really bad.
@@peacelove280 that person is s troll lol their comment had nothing to do with what I said lmao so I didn't bother to acknowledge it.
Just finished watching the episode, and the whole time after I was just wondering “Where’s the Emergency Awesome video?” Happy it’s out now, and thanks for these videos!
Nice, thanks!
Ellie needed for this to happen. She was a bit selfish saying she was fucked if he died. She also needed to protect him too so their relationship had balance. They protect each other like family. I got to your back you got mine.
How Joel manages to survive without a major infection will be my big question.
Not sure if you have played the game, but if it unfolds the same way, I'll just say it won't be a question as to not spoil anything
Exactly, she could have at least tipped some alcohol on the wound.
Penicillin and a good immune system
The game was even crazier. Joel falls 20 feet and gets impaled by a steel pipe...and somehow gets patched up by a 14 year old girl with some dirty rags lmao.
@xSTH1TMANx No, I didn't know this was from a game till Emergency Awesome did RUclips videos on it.
The greatest video game adaptation ever. This show is a instant classic.
Another strong episode! I loved seeing the arcade. That's how we used to do it back in the 80s and 90s. I've not seen a good arcade in a lot of years until 2 weeks ago. And then I see another one tonight in Last of Us.
Bro this episode had me like damn man I love this series it keeps getting me interested I loved the games and comics but I can’t wait for more of The Last Of Us especially with this episode so this was great one all around. Great video Charlie can’t wait for more breakdowns!
Awesome! More coming!
@@emergencyawesome yessir💯🔥
when I heard the left behind dlc music from the last of us game I was so happy! wow, brought back so many memories of playing the dlc. What a wonderful relationship between ellie and riley they did it so well!!
So normally I watch the new episode then watch your review video, but today I got busy and didn't watch it right away. I watched your review first then finally just got to the episode and just finished it like ten minutes ago. I appreciate the work you put in to all your content. So thank you.
Anyone else watch the episode with one eye open, waiting on a jump scare?! 😅
Literally me for 40mins. the worst
I always watch the lighted areas in the background of where the characters are, watching for something moving weirdly.
Yes! I got so anxious near the end when they started dancing stupidly with those masks I stopped watching altogether.
It's a way to keep the tension going, keeps us watching even Though it's a pretty boring episode.
Wow what an episode!! They know how to hit the heart strings 😭
Episode 8 trailer tho 👀👀
It's going to be crazy next week!
In the end Riley did leave her, just not in the way both of them imagined.
I missed Joel this episode 😭
The acting was good from both of them but I missed Joel too. Im not invested in Riley and Ellie like I am with Joel and Ellie. I kept wondering if he was ok throughout the show.
If they go by the source material, you're not gonna get much of Joel in the next episode either.
@@rwwilson21 as long as the plot is moving forward ..I don't mind it ..
@@dumblydoor3741 I totally agree.
I just noticed that Ellie and Eli held hands when they agreed to wait it out and it’s just like what Ellie did with Joel before she still stitched him up!
When she holds Joel tight and you know she won't let go, that's what broke me.
As a huge mortal kombat fan I was so excited to see mk2 gameplay in the episode. Took me back to my 90s arcade life
nice!
I commented last week when I saw they were going to the mall in the next episode, that when Ellie told Joel about her friend knowing everything about MK II and Mileena's fatalty, I was so hoping Riley would pull it off. I was not let down
@@xSTH1TMANx I feel the same way! That was awesome
Me sitting here refreshing “last of us ep 7” until your video popped up
Thanks!
Sometimes your videos are much more useful before I watch the episode. This is one of them.
Glad to hear that!
The flashback wasn't a year before the first episode, It was literally right before it because Marlene finds Elle after they get bitten and then puts her in that room that she's in the beginning of episode 1. I'm curious if you played the game?
The songs played throughout this episode like Take On Me are all 80s tunes… 80s means trouble
I think they're going to drag each game into 2 seasons each. Stretch it out a bit.
Not really the winter storyline is very short and salt lake can be cut down
I did not notice the moment the zombie bit ellie. 48:23 in the episode i did not notice a bite in her arm. Anyone?
Bella is very talented. She took me on an emotional rollercoaster
@@minafrota6124 You been saying this same comment on every video under any comment. Give it a rest bigot
@@minafrota6124not to mention the Riley girl looked 20 something. Made it seem like an adult with an underage girl
This was a really great episode. The way that Riley and Ellie try to capture some level of innocence and childhood is heartbreaking.
Here early!!! Just finished the episode I really enjoyed it Bella and storm did an amazing job being so self contained
yep!
I'm pretty sure you love these types of episodes that give you so much Easter eggs to disect! This is why I love this channel
The song that plays on the carousel is "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure
The DLC Episode
That final scene though, Joel grabbing Ellie's hand just broke me and onions were definitely chopped.
The song on the carousel sounded like Just Like Heaven (The Cure)
MK2 was my favorite. Such a great episode
"Are we going to make a family together?"
Lol, that sounded creepy as hell.
No Watergun fight lol
The carousel song was “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure.
This show just gets better and better and better. I can't wait till the next episode drops
Charlie, awesome breakdown as usual. Can't thank you enough for all your videos. I believe the music during the merry-go-round is a Cure song - Friday I'm in Love, if I'm hearing that right. Looking forward to your next video!
I definitely heard the Cure as well, but I was wondering if it might be Just Like Heaven
another good video Charlie, but I think you misunderstood the meaning of the ‘left behind’ title.
it’s Ellie who is left behind, following the death of her mother, of Riley, and now potentially Joel…
remember her line, ‘everyone I’ve ever cared about has either died or left me…’
Man, i think this story is necessary but I don’t know I I liked how they did it as far as pacing. Performances were great though. Each episode proves how good Bella is.
The pacing was awful. Some great moments, and the acting was good, but the weak script and weird pacing makes it the weakest episode by far.
The Aha song they played when the entered the mall...also an 80's song....trouble.
The song playing in the carousel scene was “just like heaven” by the cure, that scene was so cute
The song mentioned in 14:50 on the carousell is a remake of The Cure's Just Like Heaven. I thought it was take on me at first as well.
"What's a screenshot?" Lol
Pedro did a great job acting in this episode
I thought maybe the playing of "Take on me" when they got into the mall might've been a call back to the first episode when the codes came in and 80's music meant trouble.
I believe the song playing in the Carousel was The Cure - Just like Heaven.
Honestly, Pacing felt off for this one. Wish they would have just released this episode as a solo episode or make it a little longer and call it a "movie" and release it a couples months from now as a solo project. Similar to how the DLC happened.
The song on the carousel was the cure: love song, guess a metaphor meaning she’s the cure and she loves her
I get they have to change some things from the game but when Ellie is in the arcade the machines don't work so she closes her eyes and imagines she's playing. Like when Joel takes her to the museum in part 2 and she imagines she's in space. I thought they should have kept that in.
I find it so interesting that cpt. Kwong is convinced civilization will collapse without FEDRA ,then there's Jackson that otherwise.
Its astonishing, heartbreaking and pointless the amount of abuse Bella Ramsey gets online for the way she 'looks'. All I see is an intelligent, witty, talented young lady with one hell of a future ahead of her.
Dawn of the Wolf = Twilight. I guess you were never a teenage girl.
Ellie ran up the stairs and then down the stairs and found medicine....they could have made that a bit more work for her 😅
I wouldn't call the boy Ellie shot a "hunter", he was more of a "KC/QZ Resistance Fighter"
Hearing “Just Like Heaven” when they’re on the carousel is so fitting for the lyrics and feelings between them both. Ellie has been through so much hell as just a child, and seeing her grow up through hell, it had to be her only sense of “heaven”.
The little nods in the show to previous episodes is cool too, to see that Riley would’ve been a type of guard over Tess and Joel (remember when Joel asked for work they told him all they had was sewage detail and he took it)
is crazy.
My man Pedro is gettin PAID!!! Great for him! What a solid actor!
I will say, Ellie actor is quite amazing for their age, they show great range, I wish them the best 👍
Thanks Charlie!
This was a great episode!
Thanks! It was a great episode! Next week will be even better!
i hope they dont kill off joel in season 2. i think they should put joel into a coma and then at the end, joel gets out of the coma.
Ep8 and the story from the game is what iv been most excited for..when I remember the game I always think about those scenes
It would be cool to see another character that was infected but didn’t turn in the 3rd game
15:04 the song is "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure
I believe the song playing during the carousel scene is The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" played by Rockabye Baby.
How is no one talking about Ah ha take one me playing in the background. This would be foreshadowing when Ellie sings it. I hope they do this in the series next season or season 3!
