I went through Acaia, Timemore and Hario. Now i'm using medical scale for 30 dollars as i have timer on the machine.
In few word - You are absolutely damn right.

You can get a scale with great accuracy for less than $20 as you noted. The thing you're paying for with the more expensive scales, beyond just build quality and smart features, is responsiveness. I have an expensive scale as well as a really cheap scale. Both are accurate down to 0.1g. But the cheap scale takes an additional 1 to 3 seconds to settle whenever the weight changes, and that can make the difference between pulling a 35g shot and a 40+g shot. You can work around this by stopping the shot early, but that's always going to be less precise than just using a more responsive scale.
I could be wrong on this. If anyone knows of a really responsive, accurate, and cheap scale please let me know!

I agree. Many cheap scales are accurate and precise enough. But not fast.

When I first started my Espresso journey I got a Hario scale, and it was definitely not made for it. It was just not precise. After watching numerous reviews, I pulled the trigger and bought the Acaia Lunar, 250+11 shipping.
It came with like 5/6 settings, of which I only use two, timer+weight, and auto tare + auto timer. Fast forward 11months, I only just learned you can disable every other settings you dont use. Previous having to cycle through the setting was really annoying. 😅
Its really small, great with my Flair58LE, however not so much for V60 but it works.
Overall, I do not regret the purchase. If you can afford it, just get the best. You will avoid a lot of unnecessary headaches.

I feel the same. I had an inexpensive Amazon scale I used for espresso. It was ok. It didn’t fit quite right on the Flair Pro2. Got frustrated and threw it away and switched to Moka pot because I didn’t have a scale lol and I refused to buy another scale on Amazon. So, I just got the Lunar and no complaints other than “buy once, cry once”.

I had that small one. All functions except wifi. Great scale for 35 bucks from Amazon. It goes under a bunch of different names like micoffe etc. It died yesterday after I washed it under the sink. Lol yes, totally user error or should I say abuse. Looking for another one now. Is there anything that can go under the sink?

I'm trying to sell my way to expensive scale to buy a cheaper one. At the time I bought it, I was hard to find small scales for espresso. But now E got plenty of options so ... I don't need fancy features like BT connection like u. But I rely of a Timer because the one from my machine just stop right when you stop the pompe so I don't have time to read it most of the time I brew my espresso ...😂
    Thx for your work !

After a lot of deliberation I bought acacia pearl s for pour overs. I don’t use any of the smart functions but I value it for build quality, accuracy, responsiveness and hopefully, longevity. The overall user experience and the pleasure one gets using high quality beautifully designed products does in some way justify the price premium.
