Basically, your client wants a functional building. They don't want to fund your art project.

No, they want a cheap building. People absolutely cut corners on functionality and safety, too, if they can get away with it.

“Your art project”, aesthetic values might sound frivolous but there has been a growing clamor for years about the state of our cities. If clients want a building only for functionality, they have every right. Yet purely cost-focused projects don’t exist in isolation, people experience them and they influence the cities/communities. And it’s worth discussing what their impact is and how to build better.

well you got some points but easy to maintain or cost efficient.. Depends on your climate. I live in a rainy area and they decided to make alot of those "modern buildings" (I call them " Minecraft starterhouses ") but alot of those roofs are flat..
I don't think I have to say more then : Rainy... Flat roofs..
Long story short : Alot of costs add up in a short time.

Yeah but remember she spent seven years in college means she's heavily indoctrinated.
The fact that she used that phrase at all shows ignorance.
For example if she thinks capitalism has created boring architecture she should look at architecture in any communist country.
Outside of statues, their buildings are terrible and their statues.Aren't that great on average either.
And for us liberalism, if you look at the abstract art, they create. It's usually garbage but otherwise our architecture is still better when big businesses want to show off.
For example , the capitals of giant companies like google for example, I think Apple, the inside creativity of Southwest, Which most people don't see but it's very creative.
The architecture of some airports is not boring at all.

it's essential to recognize that these demands are often intensified by the pressures of late-stage capitalism. The prioritization of profit over artistic expression and community needs can limit architects' creativity and lead to cookie-cutter designs. So, while budget constraints are a factor, they're exacerbated by the broader systemic issues of late-stage capitalism. This is what I meant when I brought up the term in the vid

This is too bad. made me remember how they tore down, beautiful, Penn Station and used all that granite and marble as filler for the foundation of the Meadowlands and in its place they built that glass and steel monstrosity MSG

    • @UnravelingArchitecture
      @UnravelingArchitecture  3 месяца назад +2

It's a tragic reminder of the shortsightedness that often accompanies urban development decisions. The destruction of Penn Station, with its grandeur and historical significance, and its replacement with a modern structure devoid of the same character, speaks VOLUMES about the priorities of those “in power”. The loss of such architectural gems (and history!) highlights the need for a more thoughtful approach to urban planning that respects both history and beauty..

if your solution is just don't work for projects that are budget limited then you will never get a job again. the only way to have no one dictating your art as an architect is to go solo which the vast majority do not have the capital or clout to do.

Architects are not the builders. They often don't get to do what they like in the building for fun, their client has a budget and tells them what they want. They can't control what the client wants or what the builders end up doing.

That's entirely besides the point and we all know it...
"Not my job" is not an excuse to continue to not hit the mark, especially if it's an apparent pattern in the industry...
Obviously *budget is a requirement, curves are going to be more expensive than corners, and a "client" is always going to want to spend minimal for max return or investment so why design a cylinder instead of a box and ever expect an alternate outcome from doing so...
