I grew up in Chicago and moved to Virginia in the mid-70's while in high school. Whenever classmates or others learned I was from Chicago, they invariably asked, "Have you ever seen Al Capone?" They were always shocked to learn he had died decades ago. His infamy lived on ...
Odd. I live in Virginia and would never assume that. - Shell
Doubtless though even as a schoolkid in the 2000s he was still a huge chicago legend

I'm surprised you left out the fact that it was Al Capone who had expiration dates put on milk cartons!
Barbara Sprague really I never knew🤨
Apparently opened the first soup kitchen. He wanted to be seen as a legit guy by the public.

he also predicted the wallstreet crash
He also gave my grandmother herpes

Indeed. I could listen to Simon read a phone book and be interested lol.
There was an old video in a soup kitchen. One of the starving people in there said, "If it weren't for Al Capone, we wouldn't eat." I think he was seen as a local hero of such. Love this channel, Simon! You are amazing!
It's a ploy A LOT of powerful gangsters all over the world employ. Feed the poor and desperate and you gain basically a network of informants and free PR about how good you are, while at the same time they are burring bodies by the hundreds, raping and destroying families left and right....
@@cl1cka Very true. They tried to come across as "good Samaritans" when in fact, they were cold blooded killers.
I'm from Chicago, and when I was in high school, we went on a field trip to the art institute of Chicago and the Hull house. After visiting the art museum, we had some time to kill and our teachers just took us walking around the city until we had to leave. He showed us a building with bullet holes on the side of it and told us it was from the mob era and said it was pretty common back then for drive-by's to occur. It was surreal thinking about the fact that Al Capone could've ordered a hit, and that was the reason I was looking at that bullet hole STILL in that wall in 2012... it was weird.
Didnt Capone set up the first soup kitchens in Chicago? I remember learning he set up several charities in the area to win public support
Yes. And he used to stand outside a church in Chicago Heights handing $20 bills to the poor and asked them, "The Pope do that for you?" It was brilliant and worked, at least for a while
He fed the poor
I see pictures once in a while showing the storefront of where Al Capone gave coffee and donuts to the unemployed. The grandfather of high school friends was given money by Al Capone to set up his tailor shop. AC was not a villain to local Chicagoans, for the most part.
@Sammy Sam - Was that St Agnes Church in the Heights? I went to school there.

how ironic
Me too one of the best channels for this kind of information. Would love if simon would do more controversial, evil, twisted, not very well known people. Alot of these videos are of people most of the world already knows..
Back when it was shameful to have a child out of wedlock so you got married. Wish we kept those values today.
Alfonse Gabriel Capone was a complex man and not a comic book villain. He had many laudable traits. He was fiercely loyal to those of his employees who were loyal to him. If a subordinate was sent to jail, his salary was continued undiminished and sent directly to his family. He also knew how to treat his employees with kindness and understanding, forgiving genuine errors generously. Furthermore, he was the VERY FIRST employer in history to provide comprehensive medical insurance to all of his employees. If an employee or a family member had a medical bill of any sort, he was told to mail it to Al and the Capone organization paid it promptly. He was very generous to charities and assisted the indigent.
Of course, DISLOYALTY he treated violently and ruthlessly. He also had no sympathy with those who encroached on what he considered "His Territory". He was must certain NOT a man to cross. Even the Mafia stayed out of his way. [Capone was NOT part of the Mafia, which was Sicilian in origin; Capone was Neapolitan.] He was a great friend, and a terrible enemy.
But he was not the kind of one-dimensional villain that he is often made out to be. See these biographies:
Also, his reign as the Kingpin of Prohibition was brief: It lasted only SIX YEARS.
Capone: The Life & Times of Al Capone by John Kobler (1973)
Mr. Capone: The Real - and Complete - Story of Al Capone by Robert J. Schoenberg (1993)
Uncle Al Capone: The Untold Story From Inside His Family by Deirdre Marie Capone (2015)
Perfectly said. He was far from a Saint but he wasn't the monster media made him out to be.
If you want to find out more about Al, head to these 2 places.
The Mob Museum, downtown Las Vegas. They have the actual St. Valentines Day Massacre wall plus huge amounts of other stuff. There's also massive amounts of stuff about the Vegas mobs in the 50s and the NYC mobs of the 80s.

First Cynic or go to Moose Jaw Canada. Bootlegging tunnels are there and we're supposedly used by al Capone.

For anyone who is curious like I was regarding why he wasn't cured of his syphilis. Although we knew penicillin injections could cure the disease by the late 20s, Capone's case was too advanced to doctors to cure him.
Interesting: The headline for Capone's conviction was printed larger than, and above, the story about Thomas Edison's death.
Who cares about some light bulb we all know expiration dates on milk cartons and undermining american law is a far greater achievement
@Venting Poem Especially when those lightbulbs were not really his 'invention'
@@riatorex8722 Edison invented the first lightbulb that could be reliably used, saying that he stole the idea for the lightbulb is like saying Apple stole the idea of cell phones.
@@megabladechronicles962 Y'know, I read a book that mentioned some of Edison's very intriguing ideas. Apparently, he once advertised his lightbulbs as "everlasting" and his idea of "everlasting" was to make them as unreliable as possible so that people would just continue to replace their bulbs every so often that in a way, it indeed is everlasting. Quite fascinating if you think about it
@@megabladechronicles962 Touché. Although what I don't like is how he is always credited as the sole inventor of the electric lightbulb
For anyone interested in this time period, the 1920’s mob scene, watch the show “boardwalk empire” one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. Guys like big Jim and lucky luciano are included in it, so fascinating
vodka I love boardwalk empire. I'm from New Jersey and if you go to Atlantic city to the Ritz Carlton (which is still standing and has since been converted to condominiums) there is a plaque with the names Enoch "Nucky" Johnson, AL Capone and Charles "Lucky" Luciano listed as former guests of the hotel.

An associate of mine claims to have been handed down a card/note of apology, that was written by Al Capone. Apparently her great grandmother owned a shop where some of Capone's cronies busted up the place (reason unknown). Her great grandmother is said to have chased the men out with a broom for busting up the place. Capone got word of this and sent flowers and card of apology to her great grandmother. I never did see the card, but It makes a good story as even the toughest gangster can be chased out of a place by a strong willed woman with a broom !

Just so you know, and I'm sure you already do that we adore these videos. I think they're Far and Away the best that you guys produce. But because they aren't top tens lists and short-form, they're going to be less popular and for as long as you decide to keep making them they will be a labor of love. I wish you could get rich off of them, because you deserve to. I, along with all of your other 90000 subscribers to this specific channel of yours, adore your work here. Hope you can keep it up, and I hope people develop longer attention spans.

Thanks - these videos are not published in the order they were produced :). This was actually an earlier one (maybe even the first one I recorded come to think about it). The animated thumbs up came as a later addition. I think it should be in all videos from this point on!

hi Simon - i love these bios. very good productions. Love the photos and film scenes.
i also like the music you guys pick for each time period, but playing it all through the vid,
even though it's low, makes it hard to hear you and you have to really pay attention.
god, what an era that was - all brought to you by Prohibition. thank you so much. :}
I've watched many of your videos and enjoyed them very much.
I was a huge fan of the show "Married With Children". Great comedy that ran for 11 years. I forget all the details, but there's an episode where 'Al' (The husband) files a fraudulent tax return. When he gets caught (I think there's an audit), he thinks his savings grace is that Peg (the wife) is also in trouble. She didn't sign the return. Her reason for not signing was "That's what they got Capone on". I roared when I heard that line. I still remember it to this day.
Hello Simon, I always really enjoy watching your videos on all the channels for which you are associated with for their fair and informative depiction of the subject. I look forward to being a viewer for well into the future.

Near the high point of his power, he was worth roughly 60 Billion dollars. Also from a DEA report, from a bio show I saw, he had on hand at his home 10 million in cash.
Literally had SO MUCH CASH the rats ate something like a million a year
it was BILLIONS per year that he lost to rats - he wrote off 10% of his earnings each year due to rats & water damage

Biographics Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski...
Omg yes PLEEEEEAAAASE one of my favorite mobster tales!!!
Jon Haugland I couldn’t agree more!
That would be awesome!!!!
The vast majority of his claims have been debunked. He was never a mafia hit man. He never killed hundreds of people. The only murders he committed were killing a few of his own personal business associates - and it wasn't mob related at all. His few actual victims had nothing to do with the mafia. In fact, he wasn't involved with the mafia at all. He never worked with them or for them. He wasn't friends with any of them. He wasn't involved in the mafia in any way, shape, or form.
The man was a massive pathological liar that just wanted attention. It's been confirmed.

He did do too many horrible things to count, but if it wasn't for him, During The Great Depression, many more people would have died from starvation, if it wasn't for him!
Al Capone was 1 of the first people to open soup kitchens for the poor men, & families, during the Great Depression. He also contributed to many Charities, & helped poor Italians, who were having a hard time providing for they're families.
I think that this is why, he was protected, loved & hated, by so many people of the time!
