I am so glad that I found your channel. It is so refreshing to see a black, female dermatologist. Is it possible to film a video on how to treat ingrown hair and ways to reduce hyperpigmentation as a result of it? Is electrolysis a permanent option for the reduction of facial hair? Is there a permanent option/solution?
This video gives me a general idea of what I should be using but I still need help knowing how to layer the products morning and night . Can you please do a video on product layering for acne and hyperpigmentation in each skin type?
This channel and Dr. Vs have been so helpful. I've struggled with acne all my life and I'm now 39 and it's actually worse. I have enlarged pores and hyperpigmentation. It's so hard to find an effective regimen.
Dr Alexis, thank you for telling the world about Cyspera it’s completely addressed my paradoxical post inflammatory hyperpigmentation from using too many products at once. Salacylic acid has been a game changer and I’m now introducing Azelaic acid to even tone - Dermatica now has 20% OTC (it came out after this video). My other products contain Niacinamide. Thank you and love from 🇬🇧. You are every chocolate woman’s dermatologist! 🙏🏾

Can you please do a step by step skincare routine? I’ve watched all your videos and that’s all that’s missing. I got everything just confused on the order I need to use them
A general skincare order goes like this: Cleanse, Exfoliate (2-3 times a week), Toner, Mask once a week (usually at night), Serum, Moisturizer, Sunscreen
I loooove that you talk about the difference in products preventing new hyperpigmentation and products removing hyperpigmentation that is already there! I was just wondering about this and nobody seemed to explain this, let alone so well! Thank you :).

Love this video, I love Benzoyl Peroxide and sad to see I have been hindering my progress because of this . My skin hates salicylic acid :(. Should I switch out my BP cleanser for just a plain hydrating cleanser ?
Thank you! So BPO in a wash off form is perfectly fine it's the leave on medication that can cause issues with other topical medications. You are good my dear☺️
Hello Dr , I love your videos. Question: can we use all the acne products mentioned together or one at a time ? And also same question for hyperpigmentation products.. what routine would you suggest?? A video needed :)
I really found your review very informative...I will definately try Naturium Vit. C Super serum its $25/ for 1 oz and Inkey List Tranexamic Acid under $10. However with so many products...i just need 3 that wont go over budget and can last 2-3 months. Allies of skin mandelic is expensive $92 and it's tiny ( only 1 oz or 30 mil). I can buy mandelic acid much cheaper. Vivian Skincare has Mandelic Acid 3 in 1 wash that is $40 and 8 fl oz (240 ml). Thankyou Dr Stephens that was in dept and an excellent break down of the science in lnvoled regarding ingredients and the way they work within the skin, I subscribed 😊.
Hi Dr Stephens. Thank you for this helpful upload. I just want to point out that Glutathione isn't listed as an ingredient in the Allies Of Skin Mandelic Corrector Night Serum. Their 35% Collagen Rebuilding Serum, their 20% Vitamin C Brighten + Firm Serum and their 35% Vitamin C+ Perfecting Serum on the other hand DO contain Glutathione.
This was so helpful and informative! I've been using Paulas Choice BHA which is nice for my sensitive skin but I worry because I only have mild acne and my biggest concern is the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and preventing acne but I don't want to use anything too strong. I've been using the product for a month now and it hasn't yielded great results outside of the diminishment of my acne. Can you please make a video on how these acids can be combined and which ones are better to use in the daytime versus nighttime? I was also wondering if you recommend retinol for younger patients such as 18-22? Thank you!
Hi Dr. Stephens, thank you so much for this video. It's really helpful. I was just wondering if it is safe to use a derma roller when you have acne? If yes, do you have any recommendations?
THANK YOU SOO MUCH FOR THIS! I was wondering if you could possibly touch on body post inflam. hyperpigmentation? I have some from my arms from eczema. It's been really hard to get them to fade. I recently ordered lactic acid and alpha arbutin!
Please do a video on body treatments for back acne and hyperpigmentation. Please recommend/ focus on a full body regimen for dry skin including washes, exfoliants and toners.
Thank you so much Dr. Alexis, always learning a lot! but If I already gradually incorporated tretinoin (acnetion) 0.05% is that too harsh or I should consider switching to retinaldehyde or retinoid?
Dr. Stephen’s, I found your channel in such a hard time in my life and you’ve been such a blessing! I never had issues with my skin, but now in my early 20s, I’ve gotten a lot of stress/hormonal acne. I have oily/combination skin and my main question to you is how to treat a friction/rug burn/trauma being a woman of color I know scarring is more prominent. It’s just very discolored! What do you suggest since this isn’t an acne scar?
Thoughts on the new Vanicream daily facial moisturizer? Lots of ceramides but is squalane an issue for acne prone skin? Also should we be avoiding shea butter if we are acne prone?
I'm so glad that this video was recommended for me. Thank you for your Videos and i looovveee your voice it's soo soothing and smooth it brings me joy to even listen to your knowledge and voice :)
Thanks so much doctor. Just stumble on this video of yours today. I’m having a lot of these problems how do I fine a doctor like you in my area. Happy to find someone that looks like me
Would you recommend using the gentle exfoliants every night? I just found your channel and I’m so happy you have so much knowledge about dark skin I’ve always been so skeptical going to dermatologist near me because Im concerned about how much experience they treating dark skin
You don’t need to exfoliate every night because it’ll damage your skin barrier. Exfoliate no more than 3x a week. (I personally exfoliate 1-2x a week and focus on hydration)
Can you make a video about products to use if you have irritated your skin? For example, any soothing products you recommend to use until your skin recovers enough to use the actives. Also, how long do you recommend putting actives aside if your skin is irritated? So glad I found your channel via Susan!
Wonderful content! Could you please do a video that shows a week of day and night skin care? Like how many times a week you should exfoliate and what the routine should like when you do, how many times a week you should use a mask, or what a routine would look like using the products mentioned in this video? Forever grateful!
Physical sunscreens are mineral. The two different types of sunscreens are physical/mineral and chemical. Complexion isn’t really a factor when it comes to the type you use unless you’re considering the white cast. The type of skin you have (sensitive, acne-prone, oily, etc) is what makes physical/mineral a better option for some and chemical a better fit for others. Hope this helps.
Physical is better if youre fighting hyperpigmentation because its a "physical" barrier against uv whereas chemical absorbs the rays converting them into energy. Sure physical has a white cast but its a small price for the protection but it does usually, depending on the brand dry down less casty plus if you layer a bb/cc cream or foundation you wont notice it. "Versed" is a good one that has minimal if any cast, get it at target.
Thank you so much for this. I was using CeraVe SA face wash and breaking out, causing more dark spots. I stopped using it, and my breakouts disappeared. I should have known better-none of the CeraVe facewashes work for me, nor my family.
Thanks to you ever since I implemented paulas choice azaleic acid my skin has improved. I have dry acne prone skin and I use rovectin cleanser and the ordinary salicylic mask 2x a week and pyungkang yul moisturizer. Also I use versed sunscreen. Should I take out or add something?
Dr. Alexis, Congratulations on the work that you are doing. People of color certainly needed this support. What do you think about Good Molecules? I currently used the brightening toner. I also noticed that my face goes through phases. After a while the products I use just stop working. It’s like my face takes ten steps back and o have start all over again. Thoughts as to why this happens?
PLEASE help me. I wish I had a black dermatologist like you. I am Latino and while I have slightly lighter skin than you, it's still brown, and I have suffered from acne breakouts and they darken almost as soon as they emerge. It destroys my self esteem and makes me feel hideous and unattractive. My dermatologist (who is Indian) has me on the Cerave hydrating cleanser morning and night to be followed by the Cerave AM sunscreen moisturizer after my morning cleanse and Cerave PM moisturizer after my evening cleanse before bed. Between the cleansing and moisturizing, I use clindymycin gel on where I have had blemishes on weekdays except Wednesday night and Sunday night. At those times I use tretinoin cream. So far, I think is the best regimen I have had as I haven't had a serious breakout in a long time and any smaller ones have not been inflamed and have been calmed down by the regimen. Is there anything you can recommend for lightening dark spots that are already there? I know I will have to do laser procedures to heal any permanent scarring.
Y’all make sure to check out her video on ingredient mixing that gives you a list of compatible and non compatible ingredients in your skin care products ❤❤
Great video, I'm currently using Epiduo at night. Can I use the Ordinary Mandelic acid 10% or the Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + AHA as well. Would I need to use the Epiduo at night and the acids in the morning?
Hello Dr.Stephens, thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us. I have been incorporating your advice in my skincare routine but I am not sure about Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride in moisturizers/leave on products, is it a no for hyperpigmentation?
So happy I came across your channel. How would you incorporate the top four ingredients in a skincare routine for oily acne prone adult dark skin. I have mild acne and occasionally I get papules, pustules and sebaceous hyperplasia. I frequently have blackheads and whiteheads. I purchased most of the items you mentioned because my husband & I both struggle with acne. He has sensitive skin. I purchased Loreal salicylic acid cleanser with 3.5% glycolic acid, the resurfacing peel pads, the ordinary azelaic acid 10%, the ordinary squalane serum with 0.5% salicylic acid, the ordinary niacinamide 10% + zinc 1%, the ordinary alpha arbutin 2% and revolution skincare salicylic acid 2% serum. I'm just wondering how often to use each product? In what order should the products be layered as a morning & night routine?
You produce such quality videos. Could you make a video on how to best help our teenager with their acne brown skin. My son has dry acne prone skin. I guess I'm stuck in the mindset of using teen advertised products but perhaps I would treat it as any other adult with the same symptoms! I really value your videos! Thanks
Thank you for this video! If you're just starting to use these ingredients, is there a "purging" phase that happens? Do things get worse before they get better?
If I’m using hyaluronic acid and Niacinamide serums in the morning and night , should I switch out the hyaluronic acid and niacinamide in the morning with the vitamin C serum that already has Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid in it ? * My skin is combination skin and I have mostly white heads and some blackheads. I also have a lot of hyperpigmentation. * Thank you for your time , I love your videos they help me understand my skin and hopefully cure my acne ❤️!

Dr. Alexis,
Congratulations on the work that you are doing.
Using same thing and I feel like I’m not seeing any changes apart from drying my skin, I would like to add some too 😭
Hello Dr.Stephens, thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us. I have been incorporating your advice in my skincare routine but I am not sure about Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride in moisturizers/leave on products, is it a no for hyperpigmentation?
Love these videos!!! Thank you!
Can you use alpha Arbutin with the Avene RetrinAL at night?
Please do a video of safe products specifically for pregnant/nursing moms
Thank you for your time , I love your videos they help me understand my skin and hopefully cure my acne ❤️!
How do we layers these?? I've purchased all the products but understand layering is crucial. Please help, Amazing and very informative video, Thanks!
