I've lived in the Portland area for more than 15 years and am always surprised to see stories about it from national and international news sources. It's rough downtown, and it's hard to see so much suffering, but there are a lot of good people helping each other. We have a long way to go though.
I would actually like to see more about the type of articles that Street Roots are covering. My reasoning on this is how can unemployment numbers be at record lows but homelessness are at record highs, more people living paycheck to paycheck and why is mental health care disappearing in the USA. Just to name a few.
So rather than providing humane public housing and assistance to the homeless, we make them sell newspapers outside in all kinds of weather and wish them the best of luck. How inhumane of the US.
Please help Pakistan, we are begging for 14 billion dollars from IMF, but they are not providing us the package, please give us help, We have to stand in line and sometimes fight to get some food grains

Mean arrogant dispicable people are responsible for homelessness in the richest nation that has ever existed. Monsters like that should personally experience the misery they cause. Or they will keep on doing it. Stop blaming their victims.

We have a similar thing in the UK called The Big Issue which, as far as I know, still helps homeless people make a living.
Thanks, Sean - you're right The Big Issue does still exist and is part of our International Network of Street Papers.
This idea did not work in Phoenix Arizona years ago.
