- Le début de "Ainsi parlait Zarathustra" de Richard Strauss par le Portsmouth Sinfonia.
Beginning of "Also sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss, performed by the Portsmouth Sinfonia.
"This was recorded by the Portsmouth Sinfonia in an experiment where all the members of the orchestra would swap instruments with each other and attempt to play them to the best of their ability."
I want this played at my funeral. Double points if they drop the coffin.
Quadruple points if you're not actually dead.
no way! I made a playlist for my funerail and I put that song in, wow! maybe we should die the same day
Quintuple points if you then die laughing.
sextuple points if the coffin with the wrong body falls on you and you die

I love how it just sounds bad at first, then completely goes to hell past the 1 minute mark.
imagine Moon-Watcher smashing that skeleton to this song
it's fucking perfect

This is the soundtrack to the formation of every "amazing" "life-changing" idea I had when I was super drunk.
XD
YES!!
hahahaha
hahaha 😂
I cant like this comment enough!!!!
"Maybe if we play louder, people will think we sound good!"
"Okay... new idea. Maybe we should play so quietly, no one will hear us."
@@TheCornerCaseMan When the solitary reply is ten times funnier than the original joke...
that's already what trumpets do all the time
That's American Idol for you! "Sing louder, and it'll sound better!"
😂😂😂
When they make a movie about the year 2020, this is the opening credits soundtrack.
Yessss!!
Yeah....There’s no other theme that would fit
@@madjack821 SO? IT'S BAD!
Very much one of those under rated comments.
You, sir, have won the internet.
Spaceships careening wildly across the screen.....
+Brian Kehew your comment makes me roll about laughing. I would love to have been part of that. The drummer seems to have some idea...
They should have fired the tympany player. He was too good.
Archibald Mirenopteryx No, it's just because percussion is easy.
😉
No he’s missed a few notes.
well how the hell are you supposed to really fuck up tympany ? Besides, everybody was asked to play as good as they possibly could.
He has the easiest job out of everyone, but he still fucked it up because the timpani aren’t tuned. At all. In fact I think one of them is about at a quarter step.
I was a member of a church choir a few years ago and we had an organist/director who is one of the greatest musicians I've ever known. The thing was, he was completely deadpan and while he had the potential for a great sense of humor, he was completely dedicated to the music and almost never smiled.
Long story short, I showed him this and he couldn't stop laughing.
I discovered this track 25 years ago and every time I hear it, it still makes me laugh.
This is exactly how Richard Strauss originally imagined the piece.
This is how it sounds to wake up from a hangover.

I'm honestly impressed no-ones made a Kerbal Space Program video out of this.
Oh but somebody did! I can't find it anymore, though.

Matt lowne played the song during a KSP2 livestream in which he encountered a glitch where the KSC appeared in space and he planted a flag on it.
This is the theme song for everyone gloriously entering adulthood.

This song is a representation of my life so far
Lol. I know how you feel
its trying to be good and epic?
lol so funny
Trying being the key word
You know, this version is a remarkably skilled musical group, but everyone is trying to play an instrument they don't know how to play.
this is still one of the best ideas, all classically trained musicians playing instruments they usually don't play and they actually generate sounds out of it lol
Finally, a band did this song justice! This was amazing!!
@TheRenaissanceman65 potato tomato, it's totally fine
🤣🤣🤣!
I want this to play every time I enter a room.
I can't wait till they perform at the Bubble Bowl.
+joyce flores This is the best comment I've ever read on RUclips
Going to need a mayonnaise player!

+Al Speid It was done on purpose. This is from the description: "This was recorded by the Portsmouth Sinfonia in an experiment where all the members of the orchestra would swap instruments with each other and

Ah, ok.
They couldn't have a video because they couldn't fit the elephants on stage with the orchestra.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The emotional connection with the audience is, in some moments, breathtakingly beautiful.

I saw them perform live in about 1974. For the first twenty minutes or so, it is just good fun. Then it starts to affect how you listen to other music (the serious stuff). It is a permanent change.

Nah... every High School band that I’ve heard (and I’ve heard a LOT) is great.
My body ached for hours from laughing when I first heard this years ago!!!
I had tears streaming down my face-- probably the hardest I've laughed. Ever.
I remember responding similarly.
I think I nearly cried laughing, that first crescendo oh my goodness D
When you descend from apes with hot dogs for fingers.
Arguably their best work. The minimalism of the piece really helps to focus on the miracles of the individual tracks.
Now imagine 2001: A Space Odyssey with this being played.

Best sounding orchestra ever
Ah the Portsmouth Sinfonia... A musical "experiment" such as only the early 70s could produce! Actually the project was quite popular at a time, they sold a fair number of albums and concert tickets, and a few "stars" appeared in the orchestra (such as Brian Eno playing... the clarinet!)
Dude with the drum got off easy.
Bought this when it came out , recently gave it to my son who is a musician told him it would be the best orchestra he will ever hear , waiting now for the reply !!
Did he reply?

1:02 is when the universe collapses
exccelent timpanist lol
This was a great experiment! getting the members to swap instruments: A++
is that what happened? oh my...
No, that’s not really correct. Most of them were art students who couldn’t play their instruments well, in some cases they couldn’t play them at all.
@@Gaesschenwell, today I learned. From Wikipedia:
“Bryars was interested more in experimenting with the nature of music than forming a traditional orchestra. Instead of picking the most competent musicians he could find, he encouraged anyone to join, regardless of talent, ability or experience. The only rules were that everyone had to come for rehearsals and that people should try their best to get it right and not intentionally try to play badly.”
This is how the universe was created. If enough musicians are nearly in tune and most of them are close to playing in time, then music will spontaneously emerge.
This is the song of my people.
Oh, Christ - I remember this from the Seventies - it used to have my Dad in tears and it's doing the same to me and my kid now! Legendary.
Having been a listener of Eno's work for decades I believe it's time to revive the Portsmouth Sinfonia. In it's new incarnation celebraties could be invited to play as members and charity concerts and recordings could be generated. Imagine George Clooney on clarinet, Kid Rock on trombone, Lang Lang on viola etc. etc. all for charity.
If the year 2020 had a theme, this would be it.
British humour at his highest ,good to have you ..
All rise for the Kyrzbekistan National Anthem...

It truly is.
I cried. I cried. Another deeply moving rendition by Portsmouth's finest.

The best of all the Portsmouth Sinfonia performances. This is what Strauss had in his mind

The song of my people
I have read about Portsmouth Sinfonia a while back and have listened to them every now and again. They are just incredible.
Best John Denver cover I've ever heard
NIGEL ROBINSON heard it while riding the John Denver Experience
Thalloscracy is correct. I've been listening to the Portsmouth Sinfonia for a few years now and it really does begin to alter the way you hear things. It opens up your mind a bit, I think, in terms of tonality and such.
Plus, it's hilarious.
I'm so impressed by the one on the trumpet, you tried hard and you tried good it's almost impossible to get a sound out of these things
This makes me so happy
This cracks me up every single time, thanks for posting it
This is brilliant, I've loved them since the early 70s :) But someone is now sharing this recording on social media sites saying it's a children's orchestra and showing a photo of a shool orchestra and choir.
I'm sharing it with the correct info, people should be told of the brilliance of the PS and they should get the credit for their masterpiece ;)
I laughed till my stomach hurt, good lord above
I was not a big fan of classical music but after listening to their pieces I came to appreciate classical music. Thank you. I wish there were more bands like this so I can be entertained
I'm pretty sure I heard that they got all the band members to switch instruments with each other for this piece.
YA THINK???
Interestingly, swapping instruments is also how Talking Heads did Remain In Light.
2021: A Spazz Odyssey. Love it!
More like Innsmouth Sinfonia
They are the artists-in-residence in the music department of Miskatonic University.

thank you so much - i love Portsmouth Sinfonia. have spent many enjoyable moments in my life listening to them and sharing their creations w/ friends!
Just brilliant, can't thank them enough, and it's hard to do. I tell everyone about them, they are great, and original, just need a Les Dawson on piano, keep up the good work
I remember when my friend first played this for me back in the 90s. We were band musicians in the high school band, I laughed for like 30 minutes when I heard this. Probably top 3 hardest laughs of my life.
I have this LP!
You have my sympathy.
is there a story behind this?
they had the orchestra members switch instruments as an experiment/joke
I should've read the description.... duh.... genius!
I played this over the speakers in my classroom as the projector screen slowly rose to reveal the writing on the whiteboard informing them that today was the day of their Skills Assessment Test. I jokingly thanked the local elementary school's orchestra for the music.
I've never heard actual musical vomit before, but they managed this trick, at 1:02 in particular. Great job, Portsmouth Sinfonia!
i was the tympany player for their concert in Paris, but i am not sure this recording is the one were i was playing. It was a grat fun .
Legends in their own lunchtimes. First time I heard this in about ‘74 I pissed myself laughing. And it’s still funny !
Our music appreciation prof at Central Mich played this for us. 1984. I haven't heard it since!
And now I remember why.
I'm sure I could die of heart failure listening to this, it's so funny.
they're giving so much effort
I wish this experiment was around long enough to do Dancing Mad, One Winged angel and Liberi Fatali.

sheer genius. You can sort of hear this quite often now: there is a simplified arrangement that is used by school orchestras...often with similar results!
Someone played this New Year's Eve 2000 while I was driving and I almost went off the road from laughing.
When I was studying counterpoint, the teacher played it for the class. I have not heard it since. i am so glad you posted it.

Absolutely hilarious, although if can stop laughing, the more times you listen to this the more it becomes an avant-garde atonal masterpiece!
very intriguing. despite the playing you can hear that they are trying to get across something of the piece.

If this rendition of the theme was a person, it'd be a drunk Brit on holiday in Spain, with his trousers slipping down as he vomits on his equally drunk mate's shoes.
