Mine gave me the HEAT warning and I panicked! At that point, I realized that it was directly in the sun! I immediately took it off and put it in the fridge for a few minutes. Thankfully I received the HEAT message and I was able to deal with it.

Wow, thanks! I know how you feel about those channels. I still watch some of them because of their creative process or because I like their personality. There are others that have been an inspiration to make things better, but when it comes to products, like this one, I know that people have a hard time figuring out if the product is really so good as they portray it or not. In the end, they are doing a product presentation, which is different from a product review.

I'm now traveling with my 128gb GO 3. 128gb is enough to record all day then I transfer all files to my iPad Pro. I have another 128gb storage for tomorrow. I'm on 7 days traveling now. So far so good, don't let 4K fools you. 2.7K is good and I can upscale to 4K if I want to. It's about the convenience and easy to use. It's about capturing your best moments in time. Battery has been good too. I have a 20,000mah power bank with me. I never run out battery.

I think the storage is an issue as we cannot use sd card. Also they needs to improve outdoor voice quality as well as external mic 🎤 options, but overall it’s compact and fine for indoor use

The storage is no issue, I've bought the 128 gb variant,
recording time is 5 hours, internal battery will not last that long anyway.
External mic - maybe that usb-c adapter to mic jack will be compatible with it, no idea,
I don't intend to use external mic anyway.
Great explanation of the features and limitations of this unit. Would love to see them upgrade to enable better/external mic and a live feed from the control unit.

I loved this review, I actually bought it based on another honest review. I find this cam to be really fun compared to a GoPro. As for the Audio dysync it's only in that flow mode for long videos. if you keep your clips short it's fine. plus I use a backpack mount and it's great
Thank you so much for your feedback. Just wanted to add that my clips with bad audio sync were all between 10 and 20 seconds and the problem stars at the first second. I also have the issue on both standard 2.7K videos and using freeframe as well.

@@OttoJulian_ oh also, I use the ball joint on my back pack mount as I like being able to turn the camera left and right. I wish the quick mount wasn't so expensive and had that option to lest turn a little left and right.
@@pres002 Seems so random. As I said on my review, it only happened on that particular day (firmware was updated before using it of course). When I found out that night, I tried over and over to recreate that and I spent nearly 2 hours trying to get this issue and nothing!! I was going insane. I will take this camera to a small trip and will make sure to test the mic more. If anything happens I will report back

I only wanted to use it in a 3 camera shoot scenarno, but you just presented too many negatives for me to buy. Other bloggers have done the same thing, but the audio-video sync issue is too big an issue for me when I consider all the other negatives. So thank you!

Thank you for this critical review of the Go 3. I own the 128GB model and feel that considering the features, price, and performance it is not a great value compared to similar cameras in its price range.
Just curious...but, what cameras would you consider to be "better", that are in the same general price range AND just (or almost) as small as the Go3?
I am specifically looking for something to replace my GoPro 8 for use on top of RC boats, and on top of or inside RC cars / trucks, That's the reason I am looking for something very small, but with "very good" (or better) video quality.
Hi Mike. I get what you are saying. I feel that the Go3 is about convenience, size and portability. That’s were they are aiming to compete, or rather than compete, stand out. I have a couple of videos comparing it to other similar cameras in the market, and sure, the Go3 might fall behind some areas but I found it to be a winner in other areas 🙂
@@ninthislandrc hey man. For what you are using this might be a nice option, but I’m going to be honest with you, I think that almost anything would be better than your gopro 8 😄. I remember those generation having so many issues. I got my faith back after they released the Hero 10.
@@ninthislandrc GO3 is perfect for what you need, if you can live with 40 min runtime and lower resolution.
At least you will get no overheating error with this cam.
But the video quality is not enough, at least in your case.
@@yoshy2628 I've been looking into the DJI Action 2. I know about it's "overheating problem"...but, since I'd be recording at 1080p, and for a maximum of 15 minutes (7-10min max with boats), I'm guessing that shouldn't be a problem.

I bought it to capture backstage of my video work. They made many improvements comparing to go3. In my opinion this camera is gopro killer, its much more portable, which allows you to use it almost everyday without any extra accesories comparing to other action cams. It would be great to edit freeform videos directly in davinci resolve without dedicated insta 360 software. It was a good decision to buy it!

Other issues for me include the inability to connect an external microphone and the lag on the file transfer as well as the extra steps of file transfer. It's a shame because I really want this camera. But I think that what's coming up for me is that it would not be good for what I want to use it for. Again thank you for making this video.
yeah no external mics with this camera is a big downside for many users.
So Otto, which action-camera would you use for a three camera shoot of an interview? I've been using three Galaxy S21 Ultras on monopods with double blue-tooth clip-on mics in the phones' c-ports, and then editing in Davinci, TimeBolt, and then Camtasia. Guests scoff at the camera phones. But I like the lightness of this 3-camera kit I've put together. Action cameras would keep it light. Which action camera would you use for a set-up like this?
I want this in a pro model in black that offers an headphone jack for external devices and allow you to use the charging port for wireless mics or monitors. It would nice to have reverse charging if it doesn't for powering small accessories like a go light and a bigger case for battery life and start the gb at 64,128,256 for $399,$349,$399

Thanks for your informative input! I can see that the camera can be mounted vertically or horizontally, but can you clip it to the sling of a sling bag at 45 degrees and still get proper horizontally-framed videos?
The clip can’t be rotated the way I think you want it to. If you use freeframe the horizon can be fixed in post

I hear about the audio sync issue, but never got it. Although video is lagging 3 frames in normal mode every time stabilization is on. Seems maybe it's lagging less or not at all with newest firmware 1.0.20, but I'm not longer sure :D.
Yeah I think they fixed the audio sync with the firmware update, I've been paying attention to this issue and I haven't seen it anymore
Wonderful video Otto & very un-biased. I have a Go2 from Gop1 & use the Go2 on my RC aircraft youtube video's as the lightweight camera attaches to various positions on each aircraft, big & small, with double sided 3M tape. The problem is I always need to check before flying as many times the camera reverts to vertical & not landscape (horizontal mode). I have no problem with duration as each flight is no more than 3 mins. but does the Go3 allow me to check the landscape mode via the monitor rather that going to the Insta360 iPhone app. to check the position?

hi, you can shoot in freeframe and as I mentioned in the video you can reframe in post. Otherwise, yes you can use the action pod to check what the camera is looking at
I see you have a motorcycle, what is the mic performance at speeds? Catching more wind than bike engine sound? I have Insta 360 One R and it is the worst (I would say terrible) in terms of sound when riding motorcycle compared to my GoPro 5 Session and Garmin Virb 360.

I'm so annoyed for the money spent (or wasted?) for the Go2, that I'm not sure I'll buy this. I've seen a lot of review, that make this Go3 seem too good to be true. I was waiting for yours, because I know that is honest and not sponsored. Still, I'm not convinced about it. Besides, is almost 500€ in europe.

Hey Dario, let me (maybe) help you out. You know I don't care if I get a % or not, I was never sold on the idea of the GO2 for many reasons, but please, if you have some time, let me know what you didn't like about the GO2 and then I might tell you if this could be a better (or much better fit). Oh something else Dario, FB marketplace seems to work very well to sell that kind of stuff. I recently tried it out for the first time and sold a few things that I was not using.
@OttoJulian_ Well, first of all, the life of the battery inside the Go2 (camera and shell) was bad. It didn't last long and with time, it just got worse. At the moment, the camera battery doesn't last longer than 10mins and the shell's battery gets drained so fast even when you leave the camera inside. I ended up using the camera inside the shell with a powerbank connected most of the time. Another issue of the Go2 has always been the over heating. To the point that the shell on the camera side, after a while, got a crack without me dropping it anywhere. I don't know. As much as I love the OneX2, I have this bad feeling against the Go2, which I was really hoping to enjoy much more than I did/am. Thanks for the suggestion about the FB Marketplace. I'll give it a try 😉
OK so battery life on this one is good and "as advertised" (tested that myself) but I can't say anything about how well it will hold in the future and the times you are getting are not acceptable! No wonder you have second thoughts! As far as the overheating, it gets warm but that's it (I did test it without the camera moving so that is supposed to get warmer faster....). I will try it on a hot day outdoors in the following days, I plan to compare it to the Hero 11 and I have gotten a couple of requests to compare it to another camera which I'd rather not to mention in public. :) I'll make sure to keep you updated if I find anything weird

I'm piggybacking on your comment because I have the GO 2 and I find I get frustrated by certain things:
1. Connection with phone is inconsistent. It takes a long time to connect to my pixel 6 pro and also I find that I never can get it to connect on first try.
2. I get frustrated trying to frame shots because the connection between my phone and the GO 2 is spotty and inconsistent.
3. My GO 2 has slow file transfer using wifi connection and it gets even slower when the camera heats up during the file transfer.
Does the GO 3 experience these issues? It might help me with my decision to sell the GO 2 to fund a GO 3 purchase.

I only had the Action 2 for a short period of time and then I sold it. That's how much I liked that. If these are your 2 options, I'd go with the GO3. In a few days I will release a few videos comparing this camera to other popular ones, but as you probably guessed, there won't be an Action 2

I always upgrade to newer generations for my cameras. But Sadly, I am not upgrading to 3 from GO 2. The GO3 is much heavier and much less pocktable. At the size of a GoPro, you don't get memory cards, no replaceable batteries and the Action Pod is not even waterproof. The flip screen will break on your first bad landing. I would much prefer an iterated version of the GO2.
The GO series is about the SIZE and WEIGHT. 34% Increase weight on the Camera unit. Real bad!

I feel that high caliber influencers are doing more of a product showcase/presentation than a review, and people tend not to see the difference. So they are technically not lying, the camera or any product that they talk about do have the mentioned attributes that they show but as we can see, there is always another side of the coin

I bought this and tested in a well lit room, the video quality is poor even with all the tips from other youtubers on how to setup the camera. I guess it works well mostly when their is really good lighting, like during a bright day, but still not the best of quality compared to other action cameras. I returned it and I am sticking with my X3 for the meantime.
Yeah that’s right, sometimes for us it’s a well lit room but in reality it’s not for these kind of cameras, so naturally they will raise the ISO and the video won’t look as good. Artificial light has to be strong, like the one I use at my face when I’m recording, otherwise it’s good to consider other lights at home to be insufficient. Have you considered the new Pocket 3? Just in case, there are a few videos on my channel
@@OttoJulian_ I am actually considering on getting the Pocket 3. I've seen really nice videos out of the box. I just loved the small profile of the Go 3, how it doesn't get in the way, almost hands-free.

I don't understand the obsession with cream of the crop quality in video or photo. It just seems like people expect a 400$ device to have the quality of top 0.01% cameras that will quite possibly cost you 10s of thousands :D
We always expect to get more for less
So I invented a mount for my dogs harness that allows you to attach any action camera to it and after seven months of research and development and living sex go pros because of “The Frame” becoming on latched therefore the GoPro would fall out while my K9 & I were out adventure Dog’n…. How the GO2’s frame was attached via compression it made it impossible for the camera to fall out which I absolutely loved!
I wrote them an email about two years ago saying that if they ever make a go three that they need to make it voice control & also have a separate remote (NOT THE BATTERY HOUSING) to control it incase your voice is out of range.
Also- Have the camera WATERPROOF…. And than a larger memory (32,64,128GB is a great choice)

Influencers.... mine overheated a few times indoors some as early as 20 mins with AC on at 1440....
This was not sent by insta360, and even if they did and it overheated I would say so as I have with so many other cameras. I tested this with no AC inside a small room, not too hot it was sure not cold. You probably got a bad copy or you are doing something wrong
I was in the fence getting one of these but ended up removing it from list. The reason being the internal batteries. I still have the Hero 7 and managed to keep it because of the removable batteries. I dont have the resource to keep upgrading every iteration so I'll go for a camera I can fix easily.
That’s true, cameras with non removable batteries are in disadvantage if someone wants to keep them in the long run. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Excellent honest breakdown. I think though that this isnt for people that want the best resolution and stats, this is meant for those that want the small size for creative ideas, like sticking it to the side of a knife while cutting food...or on your hat... it's small form factor makes it way more versatile than all other action cameras

Probably the best review regarding the video quality options and their resolution. Thank you very much! Here's a question: At maximum resolution and bit rate, is it worth getting the 128GB version, or will I run out of battery first, before running out of memory?
I got the 128GB and I live in Thailand. This camera needs a little fore thought before use as the battery isn't the best once detached from the main unit and it also gets hot (I'm in Thailand) Its advisable to film your first clips using the main housing and then use the camera alone for pov shots or action shots. This way the battery in the camera is the last to be used.
if money is not an issue 128GB is ideal. maximum battery life as I said on the video is about 3 hours, and the maximum recording time depends on the mode that you use. Either way, battery will run out first before you can fill the memory
with 128 gb the battery will run out first.

I am never buying an insta360 camera again after their trashy app that they force you to connect to just to use the camera did not work on my 5 year old motorola smart phone and i had to actually take it to a phone repair shop to pay some dude to work it and he couldnt do it.. eventually he did it on his phone and was fine and told me to get a samsung or iphone.... so £400 for a stand alone camera that i need a very high end smart phone just to make it not a paper weight no thanks!!! GoPro hero 12 connected fine on my phone and was a lot shorter to get the update not that is ok either.. whats next connect your toaster to our app just to use the thing?!?!
You are right for the most part, but you only need the phone for the initial activation which can be done on anyone’s friend and then not connect to it anymore and use it by itself. But thanks for sharing your input and I respect your opinion

No. Insta360 is the name of the brand. Maybe they didn’t know in the beginning that they would be making other types of cameras.

Great easy to follow video Otto! Most tubers talk way too fast for us novices! You are a good speed and talk good English, although I think it is not your first language! I have 2 of these cameras and they are small and easy to conceal when vlogging and not looking obvious. I also will export files to my iPhone thru the mobile app when the memory is full, and it takes about 30 minutes for 64GB. When one is full, I just switch to the other. I have had some of these issues like low resolution, but you helped me understand why that was happening because stabilization setting too high? I set it at normal now and seems better. Also, what setting is best for low light? I put the EV number higher (3.0-4.0) when it is darker outside and low (.05-1.0) when in bright sunlight. The camera also gets hot and will shut off, another reason I bought 2, to let the other one cool off! I used to stop at 7/11 and put it in where they sell bag ice for 5 minutes! Here in Thailand there are 7/11's every 100meters! Overall, it is a good camera once you learn how to use it but it does need an SD card upgrade on next model!
Thanks for your kind feedback! you are the first person that I know of to have 2 of these cameras. Very clever, I can only imagine how hot it is over there! There is not much to do with this tiny camera in low light, the most you can do is set it to 24fps, raise a bit the EV compensation as you are doing and I prefer not to have a very high ISO to avoid too much noise. In post you can bring up the shadows a bit but don't expect great results with this camera

Does anyone know if the dji mic 2 will connect to this camera?
Not directly. You can use the DJI Mic as a standalone mic and then sync in post but that’s just about it
@@OttoJulian_ gotcha. It sounds like the in camera mic works fairly well as long as it’s not too windy. I just want to be able to walk around with it mounted on my chest and talk at the same time.

@@OttoJulian_ i hope the still images comparisons are included in the insta360 vs gopro hero 11 video! As well as battery life, since i’ve seen blogs saying that thw insta360 go 3 only has 15 mins of battery life where the website says 45 mins
@@frtly on this video I did mention battery life. I did test it out at maximum resolution and did get plenty of life. Do you remember on which channel or website you saw that? If so just post the name not the link (links go to spam )

Thank you for a thorough review. I was tempted by this amazing camera. However, I was not impressed by the mic recording in the wind. The lack of a radio mic therefore rules it out for me.

Thanks Vincent. Haven’t seen you in a while around here. The mic issue could be fixed if they find out what the cause is. The other aspects mentioned like lower bitrate, low resolution playback etc, will most probably stay like that because they are helping to improve the device’s performance.
