A thousand thank yous for this video. Dealer wanted close to $800+ to change the plugs, wires, and coils. I did it for $140 in parts from Rock Auto and 3 hours of my time. Your video was a great help and I was able to get this done with no problems. Van runs like new again. Smooth and no misses.
Thank you for your time posting this how-to. Last plug change was in 2005 (65K miles ago) and dealer cost was over $300. Took 3 hours and cost of $40 for new plugs and throttle body gasket. Many Thanks!
Watched this video and was able to do it for the first time without all the hard aches of finding information and trying to understand black and white photos in a service manual or all data. Might i add to this video, remove the 4 13mm bolts on the throttle body and you can now remove whole intake plenum. Thanks for the help!
Thank you so much for sharing this video! You helped my husband accomplish a successful tune-up. It is so awesome when people have the heart to share their knowledge with others. This is such a blessing! May the Lord richly bless you in every good thing!
I remember when changing spark plugs and plug wires were just a 15-20 minute job. I miss those days. very good information here though... thanks for this. the more we try to improve cars, the worse we make them.
Amanda, you totally rock ! this is a job that most people who write on forums have avoided for years, because most of them (including me) were afraid of it. I had seen a pretty good write-up of this, but after seeing your video I am ready to tackle it. Many thanks for sharing your expertise.
Amanda, thanks so much for the video. I have been putting this job off for a year. My 2002 Sedona with 150000 miles started missing so I thought it was the plugs. In the dark I could see a coil pack was shorting against the block. That was an easy fix replacing the three coil packs and the front three spark plugs. But the rear plugs seemed a to big a job for me. Since it ran good with the new coil packs and front plugs I put off the rear plugs. Then last week at 169000 miles the rear heater lines began to leak. They come in three sections and all three had leaks I found out. I needed to remove the intake to get to the front section. So after finding your video I decided to do it myself. New heater lines and spark plugs and wires and all is great. Again thanks for the great video that gave me confidence to do the job. Keep posting!
Hi Amanda, I was about to sing your praises, as I followed your video and - it seemed - successfully resolved a nagging, and worsening problem with my 2005 Kia Sedona. It never quite ran right after being purchased used in 2007 but in the last couple of months starting to progressively worsen, the local repair shop was advising a full replacement of the three (3!) catalytic converters. A friend, my 13 yo son and I spent (too) many hours following the instructions you posted here. (The bracket on the rear passenger side ended up being a HUGE PITA.). But we got it done and all the OBD codes disappeared (had been alerted to a misfire in Cyl 5 and catalytic converter not operating at optimum). The engine, for the first time in a long time, was running smoothly ... no sputtering. Honestly, I don't think the rear plugs had EVER been replaced, despite a local shop replacing all the coils about 6 months ago. Did have a moment of panic when a new code popped up (0107) but quickly discovered that the passenger side wire harnesses (including the MAP sensor) hadn't been reconnected. Fixed that and all was well. But today, I took it for longer than a test drive and it died ... flat out died. Was lucky to roll the vehicle in to a parking lot and could not restart it. click-click-click, nothing. I'm hoping there was a MAP-manifold pressure issue that will be resolved by reinspecting the MAP sensor plug and the engine cooling but right now I've got a sinking feeling we killed the Kia.
Steve Hampe Went back the next day, double checked hoses/wires, nothing seemed amiss. Sedona started up without a problem. Once I tried to drive it though, same problem as before, no power, screeching belt sound, smell of something burning (plastic?), and white exhaust. Elsewhere on The Google, I'm hearing, particularly the white exhaust is indicative of a blown head gasket, just not seeing how we got from this repair to fouling the head gasket.
great video. going to save me time hunting the 5 bolts on the motor bracket in the back. one one tip. always put small bolts back into hole to remember where they go for reassambly.
Great job Amanda! I find for these basic R & R videos it's most helpful to be to the point and you did that perfectly. Many people like to drag them out which is a detraction. Longer explainations have their place in more technical videos. You definitely have that special knack for making comprehensive and concise videos thank you again. Joe
Great video! Sure beats the last one I saw where the person showed you how to replace the front three :) I didn't have to unhook all those wiring's though nor the whole air box. Just remove anything bolted to the intake and move the whole thing aside.
Thank you so much for posting this. It made everything go a lot smoother than if I would have tried this on my own. Spot on directions. Thanks a million.
Great video. Used this one and a couple others to get my plugs changed on my 2007 Sedona. You'll hear upwards of 6 hours to change the back plugs and get everything back together. Took me less than 3 hours by watching these videos. Thanks.
Wow, thank you for the heads up on the process. It's definitely a procedure to be done by a professional. You did a wonderful job! Kia couldn't have possibly buried the plugs any deeper and made more parts to replace though
I would just like to say THANK YOU!!!!! a VERY THOROUGH instructional video that made it easy to replace all the plugs and the coils. all in it took me about 4 hours... having not changed plugs since I had a 1976 Ford LTD. I had to buy some tools that will pay for themselves from now on. was able to find discount coils online... throw in plugs and protective lubricant and I spent about 200.00 saving me easily 800.00 + at a shop. thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
thanks for the video amanda.i changed plugs and wires in a 03 sedona this morning, and your video really helped.i have large hands and it was no problem reaching the back bolts, but i did have to use a 12mm wrench on a couple, thanks again.
And I thought the exhaust system was over engineered. Then I saw this. Glad I found this video. I do most of all my own work, but there is no way I would go through all this. It runs fine enough! lol Thanks for the video.
Amanda, this video was just great. It gave me the knowledge and confidence to remove the plenum on our kia and change the plugs and wires. Took me 4 hours start to finish with barely any breaks :P Your video and explanations were spot on and well presented. Thanks for helping me to save a bundle!!!!!
I had a chance to see the video, and it was very helpful. But the time that you said it would take to complete this process was long most people I could see this taking 4 hours like I see but as I have grown up around cars and truck's and only using hand tools not air tools it only took me about 2 hrs to complete from start to finish. And this is the first time that I have ever looked at an kia optima in my life. Thanks for the video of it .....
Thank you for the Video....Replacing a hose in the rear, etc.... also did the tune up, among other things, since I was there!..... It really helped a lot!2003 Kia Sorento 4WD 3.5Thank you....
You are awesome!!! I just changed my spark plugs last week watching your video and everything is working well. Thanks again for this helpful video. Definitely, took some patience from my part but at the end I did not have to a pay a mechanic $460. Beers are on me! :-)
Great job and thank you. My 2005 has a slight misfire I think and I was thinking it might be plugs. Your video has showed me what to expect. Thanks for making the time to do this. Added to my favorites.
About nine minutes in, you're removing a metal wire lock from an electrical connector and I wanted to point out a better way. The wire is actually a spring and instead of removing it, you press down on the wire and it will expand the locking tabs on the sides of the connector. Then you can pull your connector without the risk of dropping/losing the wire. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the very informative video. Saved me a ton of time and agitation! Real good. Keep doing what you're doing! I got done in less that 2 hours. The problem with the Kia that I had to work on, was that someone had installed a cheap set of plugs rather than the factory plugs. They were fried........NGK only. Thanks again.
you are the bomb!!!!! thank you for this video. the back bolts gave me a little trouble and the mechanic that did this before me left off some back bolts. I am missing two back bolts but it runs fine. You got skills! THANK YOU!!!!!!
Holy crap girl thank you! Great video. back ones are a little intimidating, but It needs to be done! Im inspired to keep going thank very much!! Amanda's rock!!!
First thanks for this video. Second I think this was an awesome video. Next u must have been professionally trained either in a tech school or in the military. I am really impressed with what u did. Great work and an awesome way to show us dudes that we can save a buck or two doing it yourself. I have put off doing mine for over a year. Now the van has started missing I really need to replace them. Once again AWESOME job on the vide and great work. Pretty darn professional...
Thanks for your kind words, Thomas! I was in the military, but as a linguist (nerd) and then went to school for Physician Assistant, which I still practice as, but in the civilian world now. Glad I could help!!
Great job the only thing I did different was I tightened the intake manifold down before trying to put that bracket back on the back it helped to line up the holes for that bracket. But GREAT JOB
I went through a couple of different videos on this subject.. This one was the only one that showed me it was ok that the plug boot comes off the coil pack and can easily be put back together.. At first something seemed amiss and the van was running like crap.. And I couldn't figure it out.. With your knowledge I took that one coil pack back off and took the boot off of it made sure everything was still good and reinserted it properly and the misfire was gone.. I'm saving the back three plugs for Wednesday of next week.. One of my two days off.. That way I can do the back three without the interruption of having to rush through putting it back together in time for work the following day.. Lol..
My local Kia dealer wants to charge me $600 to change my plugs on my 2011 Kia Sorento....Freakin crooks. So I am checking to see how easy or difficult it is to do myself. Thanks for the video.
Thank you! ...I'm saving this video and plan on watching again a couple of more times. Well done! I do a lot of my own maintenance but have been afraid to tackle this job on my wife's van. Gonna keep the video handy, but pretty sure I am going to give it shot. I have a question if you get a chance to answer. I have pretty big hands. Am I going to have any issue getting to the bolts or harnesses that are the farthest back by the firewall? Thanks again, Amanda! If you do anymore work on your friends Kia Sedona, please post a video!
It's already a tight spot but I think you'll have ample room to get your larger hand back between the firewall and engine to turn a wrench. BTW, you're welcome! So glad it could help. I noticed there wasn't a good video on this when I went to tackle it so I spent the time to make it :0)
Hi Amanda. First of all, thank you so much for such a well done job. Secondly, thanks for taking the time to make the video in order to help others like me. I do however have an issue, after getting the job done, my van won't start. It cranks but doesn't start. Any recommendations?
It's been a while since I've done this job, but I believe the bolts that you are referring to are either a 10 mm, 12 mm, or 14 mm socket, attached to a small extension (3" or 6"), using a ⅜" ratchet.
Oh gosh, it's been so long I don't remember, and I can't find the torque specs sheet that I used. I believe it was somewhere between 20 and 35 foot-pounds
More so regular maintenance. It's a friend's mom's van. I believe she was told they needed replaced while at the stealership for something else. They quoted her several hundred dollars (I think ~$400) for parts totaling
This is clearly the best video I have seen on this project. My Sedona is giving me an engine light with regard to oxegine sensor and running rought, so I thing this tune up is in order. Is there something else I should look to do at 125k miles? Timing chain??
If those are, in fact, metal gaskets, a layer of black spray paint on each side will help it seal should you reuse them. Put it on somewhat thick and let it get tacky.
Any ideas on checking AC not losing cold air, I had mine serviced last year and can’t believe that there could be Freon leak when ran good all summer after service I also wanted to mention this is also for 2005 Kia Sedona thx
Every bit as bad as I thought it would be. Thank you for making this video though- I think I can do it. Better a couple hours on a Saturday than paying someone 500 bucks to do it for me.
Andrew Stang-Green, you're welcome and great question. If I remember right, torque specs for this model year was listed at 18-22 ft-lbs so I went with a rounded number. I did not mean to say in-lbs. Furthermore, I know this is an aluminum head and these plugs are 14mm, which even generic charts list around 20 ft-lbs. You could also go ¼ turn after crush washer contact if you thought 20 ft-lbs was too much.
Amanda Schwartz Thank You for Your knowledge. I would like to share some of mine. Google Uttarabhadrapada Then message me again here if You wish to understand more.
good Video, historias Amanda i just have a question, I try to change spark pugs 2s in the pass, and when I was done , and I when ans start the van, the rear passenger side cylinder start nuking bad, I loss the first engine,; the 2n time I have to take the rear head and clean that off, but I didn't fine anything, but small shreds, and now I'm afraid to doit again, what do you think I did wrong, please let me know
sorry Amanda for my spelling, I vas in a hurry , I'll try again. I change the spark plugs on my van twice before, on two different engines , but both of the times when I was done, and I start the engine on, one of the cylinder start knocking really bad, that happen to me twice, what to you think I did wrong? is that ever happened to you?
Carlos Colindres Gosh, Carlos, I've never had that happen before. The first thing that I would check is whether or not my spark plug wires were reinstalled correctly. If those are good, I'd be worried that I dropped something in the cylinder, and it's banging around in there. Another thought is that the auto parts store sold you the wrong plug, and maybe it's a little bit longer than the original and the end of the spark plug is hitting the top of the piston. If you have a borescope, or could rent one, I would take some of the spark plugs out, and look into the cylinder for any damage. I have also heard of the cars computer needing to "reset". The ECM has to go through some type of a learning process before the engine will run smoothly again. Those are just some thoughts, good luck!
Greetings from Australia I have to change my plugs soon, and because I am an oldie its the garage for me I hope they do the right thing for me, but I expect they will charge like a raging bull
Thanks for the video, what this has really taught me is NOT to buy a Kia. I can't believe you have to go through all this hassle just to change spark plugs. My 2000 plymouth grand voyager was a pain, but not this bad. As someone said below, mechanics need to get with the engineers to show them how ridiculous their design is.
str8Proud spark plug is not a part that needs to be replaced every month or even every 6mos. There is no reason to make its replacement to be so much easy by non-technical person. Also proper installation is crucial for this part and you need to learn the detail procedure.
I'm not a mechanic, but my brother is. He has over 35 years of experience and he thinks any vehicle that is designed like the kia sedona should be stayed away from. I change my own plugs on all my vehicles, like I said, my van's plugs were a pain. But at least I could change them. My cousin owned a kia and she was looking at paying $458 plus taxes. What, pay $458 plus taxes to replace $42 worth of spark plugs? According to the Kia manual you should replace your spark plugs every 24 months or 96,000 kilometers which ever comes first. So I'm thinking every two years my cousin had to pay $458 plus taxes to replace her spark plugs if she's was going to follow the maintenance schedule. That is outrageous and I'll never buy a kia that requires me to remove the manifold just to get to the spark plugs.
PB Blaster didn't work :( not really any room for extending wrench handle, thanks anyways tho! When I put the bolts back in do I have to worry about tightening the back ones since I never got 3 of them out?
I don't know. I'd google it. This van had over 100K miles and knew it had likely not been done before so I went for it. Especially considering how much labor was involved for price of he parts.
SANTA FE 2003,2004,2005,2006 3.5L USERS EXTRA ACTIONS: 1. You do not have 5th bolt with bracket on the rear. 2. On airfilter side: 2.1 there are L-shape short vertical antefreeze tube under throttle: remove it (little spill, no bother) 2.2 there are EGR valve behind throttle on TWO bolts: unscrew them (bottom holds rear bottom sockets). 2.3 there are 2 vacuum lines under throttle goes from radiator side: unattach them 3. Firewall side: 3.1 there are 12mm bolt with bracket holds vacuum line reversing instead 5th rear bolt bracket: remove it before 4 first rear bolts. 3.2 unattach vacuum from rear tiny tube, put line on top of the intake 3.2 unattach 1 vacuum line from EGR valve to intake other stuff is similar.
Very informative I’m a female mechanic for 35 years. I enjoy seeing young women turning wrenches. Did not have many in my day.
Glad the video could help!
Thank you for your time posting this how-to. Last plug change was in 2005 (65K miles ago) and dealer cost was over $300. Took 3 hours and cost of $40 for new plugs and throttle body gasket. Many Thanks!

Thank you Miss Amanda. Your video was very helpful for me.
kia made it crazy complicated to replace what should be simple spark plugs.

Good video, I did this job on my minivan just once, I got to do it again in a couple of weeks. I will look at this video two or three times.
Great job and thank you.

Great Video!
Awesome thank you, i be doing mine next week :)
Ahhh man! Another bolt? Lol. Nice video.
Thanks Amanda
Great video, thanks. I bought a 2004 kia Sedona LX. I don't have a torque wrench. You think I can just tighten and be ok?
Thank you! ...I'm saving this video and plan on watching again a couple of more times.
I noticed there wasn't a good video on this when I went to tackle it so I spent the time to make it :0)
Eres Increible, te felicito por tu video esta bien explicado y senalado, muchas gracias por tu ayuda.
Hi Amanda. First of all, thank you so much for such a well done job. Secondly, thanks for taking the time to make the video in order to help others like me. I do however have an issue, after getting the job done, my van won't start. It cranks but doesn't start. Any recommendations?
Hey Tavo. For some reason just now saw this. Did u get it figured out?
Yes, I did. Thanks. It was just a blown fuse.
Hi Amanda. What tool did you use to remove the bolts from the top part of the engine?
It's been a while since I've done this job, but I believe the bolts that you are referring to are either a 10 mm, 12 mm, or 14 mm socket, attached to a small extension (3" or 6"), using a ⅜" ratchet.
Outstanding, Thank you. If you retire to Florida, let me know, I'll pay well for your services and help supplement your retirement.
Amanda, thanks for the video! I had to do my fuel injectors and used your vid to get to that area. What torque did you tighten the plenum to?
Oh gosh, it's been so long I don't remember, and I can't find the torque specs sheet that I used. I believe it was somewhere between 20 and 35 foot-pounds
Thank you! I did 20ft LBS to be on the safe side.
Thanks for the great video. Did you replace these as normal maintenance or were there symptoms that prompted the change?
More so regular maintenance. It's a friend's mom's van. I believe she was told they needed replaced while at the stealership for something else. They quoted her several hundred dollars (I think ~$400) for parts totaling
Thank you very much for the video. Helped me no end :-)
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
Greatest video thank you ❤️.
This is clearly the best video I have seen on this project. My Sedona is giving me an engine light with regard to oxegine sensor and running rought, so I thing this tune up is in order.
Is there something else I should look to do at 125k miles? Timing chain??
This is awesome! Thank you so much for making this video.
If those are, in fact, metal gaskets, a layer of black spray paint on each side will help it seal should you reuse them. Put it on somewhat thick and let it get tacky.
Any ideas on checking AC not losing cold air, I had mine serviced last year and can’t believe that there could be Freon leak when ran good all summer after service I also wanted to mention this is also for 2005 Kia Sedona thx
there are two expansion valves if you have rear AC. I just changed ours. walmart has the best deal on factory compressor. Denso for only $155 bucks
Every bit as bad as I thought it would be. Thank you for making this video though- I think I can do it. Better a couple hours on a Saturday than paying someone 500 bucks to do it for me.
thanks
May I have an organized list of everything I'll need?
Thank you for the very helpful video!
Just curious though, did you mean to say 20 inch pounds?
Andrew Stang-Green, you're welcome and great question. If I remember right, torque specs for this model year was listed at 18-22 ft-lbs so I went with a rounded number. I did not mean to say in-lbs. Furthermore, I know this is an aluminum head and these plugs are 14mm, which even generic charts list around 20 ft-lbs. You could also go ¼ turn after crush washer contact if you thought 20 ft-lbs was too much.

Thank You for Your knowledge.

good Video, historias Amanda i just have a question, I try to change spark pugs 2s in the pass, and when I was done , and I when ans start the van, the rear passenger side cylinder start nuking bad, I loss the first engine,; the 2n time I have to take the rear head and clean that off, but I didn't fine anything, but small shreds, and now I'm afraid to doit again, what do you think I did wrong, please let me know
Carlos Colindres I'm sorry but your message is really hard for me to follow. I'm not sure what you're saying.
sorry Amanda for my spelling, I vas in a hurry , I'll try again.
I change the spark plugs on my van twice before, on two different engines , but both of the times when I was done, and I start the engine on, one of the cylinder start knocking really bad, that happen to me twice,
what to you think I did wrong? is that ever happened to you?
Amanda Schwartz thank you, i'll check on this, and see if I can fine the problem, I like your video, is explained very good👍
Greetings from Australia
I have to change my plugs soon, and because I am an oldie its the garage for me
I hope they do the right thing for me, but I expect they will charge like a raging bull
you go girl!

Hi, I got a Sedona 2002 and I wanna clean the injectors.can you show me please if you dont mind.?
I have a complete coil. Do I have to still add that grease to the plug end?
It would be helpful. It just helps to increase electrical connectivity/conduction
@@iproject1850 ok thank you!!
great job
about to give up cause I only got 2/5 of the bolts out of the back of the plenum, any tips? They seem really stuck
Stephen Greenberg do u have any PB blaster you can spray on the bolts?
Maybe extend your wrench handle to get more torque?
thanks for the tips I'll let you know how it goes!
PB Blaster didn't work :( not really any room for extending wrench handle, thanks anyways tho!
When I put the bolts back in do I have to worry about tightening the back ones since I never got 3 of them out?
Stephen Greenberg I would tighten all of them 😏
Haha yea i meant like any specific order since I never successfully removed them guess it looks like back bolts tightening order doesn't matter?
How often do we have to change the coil-on-plug?
I don't know. I'd google it. This van had over 100K miles and knew it had likely not been done before so I went for it. Especially considering how much labor was involved for price of he parts.
+Amanda Schwartz ok thanks
is this the same as the Hyundai Santa Fe 3.5L?
Sorry, wish I could help, but I have no idea.
What year Sedona was this engine for?
2005. It's in the description :)
+Amanda Schwartz Thanks :)
I'd love to meet the person who thought this layout was a good idea - so I could dismantle their body to show them just how good an idea it is! :-X
SANTA FE 2003,2004,2005,2006 3.5L USERS EXTRA ACTIONS:
1. You do not have 5th bolt with bracket on the rear.
2. On airfilter side:
2.1 there are L-shape short vertical antefreeze tube under throttle: remove it (little spill, no bother)
2.2 there are EGR valve behind throttle on TWO bolts: unscrew them (bottom holds rear bottom sockets).
2.3 there are 2 vacuum lines under throttle goes from radiator side: unattach them
3. Firewall side:
3.1 there are 12mm bolt with bracket holds vacuum line reversing instead 5th rear bolt bracket: remove it before 4 first rear bolts.
3.2 unattach vacuum from rear tiny tube, put line on top of the intake
3.2 unattach 1 vacuum line from EGR valve to intake
other stuff is similar.
Nice information 👍🇵🇰🇸🇦
