  • ( - to quote Monty Python - ) "and now for something completely different"
The Flying Scotsman three-day vintage car rally was passing through my home estate on Friday 14th April. Although it's not my usual filming material, I couldn't miss it. I intended to film at three different locations on the estate and went dressed and equipped for the glorious day that was forecast. Serves me right for believing in weather forecasters.
The previous weekend I had been at the Kirkby Stephen Classic Vehicle Rally where, to someone of my age, most of the vehicles looked distinctly modern.
Today, the youngest participant dated from 1948 while most of the cars were from the 1920s and 30s. With no power steering or servo-assisted brakes, primitive suspension, no synchromesh on the gears, very narrow tyres (not to mention open cabins!) - driving was a very different experience in those days - for the fortunate few who could afford it.
The downpour undid my plans but at least the good news is that my drowned camera dried out at home and is now working again.

Great video Tim, some iconic cars involved - great shame about the weather, hope you managed to save the camera!

Thanks Charles - happily, the camera seems to be working again. That particular camera was drowned two years ago and died then but came back to life as it dried out and has worked quite happily during the intervening period so - here's hoping!

Some interesting cars there Tim and right on your doorstep. At Citadel we'd wondered where you were- now we know it was Flying Scotsman taking preference over 47712 Lady Di.

One hundred internal combustion engines versus one compression ignition - no contest!
Anyway, with four visits in the next six days - three railway and one cinema - I'll be seeing more than enough of the Citadel this week - see you there, no doubt.

Thanks David - the camera seems to have dried out of it's own accord and is working normally - let's hope it lasts!

That has to be the worse, driving in a convertible while raining, looks like a fun race though.

If only the sun had shone - which it did all day except for the two hours of the rally passing through.
