I have visited a crash site in the Smoky Mountains. I felt the same as you did, Cody. Realizing that people died at the site becomes humbling. I felt that same way at the 911 Memorial. These sites become sacred ground.
Thank you for taking us along on that hike to sacred ground and for expressing the importance of the lives lost even though in was nearly 50 years ago. The army lost 3 colonels that night. My friend lost her dad. He was one of the 8 passengers and only 39 years old. That crash changed the lives of many people. To further compound the tragedy, they couldn’t find the crash site. It took 3 days to find the first 8 bodies. September will mark 50 years.
Convair CV-600, converted from piston engine to Rolls Royce Dart engines with four bladed props in 1965. It took three days to find the wreck and three in a helicopter died during the search. Pilot error in the Convair. Took off at night, not on an Instrument flight plan. Co-pilot was flying while captain directed him to descend to 2000'. Copilot questioned enroute minimum altitude. Pilot checked his charts and told him, "We should be at forty four hun*. And that is when the cockpit voice recorder cut off. They were a lot farther North than searchers thought they would be.
Texas International Airlines Flight 655…. That was the best adventure ive seen yall go on. I believe its a way to honor them also. RIP to the 11 that lost their lives.
Natural repellent would be cool if it actually works. As a land surveyor, I've found nothing that works better than deet. Off Deep Woods is a life saver.
Off topic…sorry… but you reminded me of my Mother in law…at 80 yo she completed with her friends the entire Ouachita trail! She has since passed… thanks for the great memory trigger! Thanks too for the tic info!
When I was in the military we used dog or cat tick and flea collars to put around the top of our boots, so ticks wouldn’t crawl up the pants. Works well for sand fleas in SC and other beaches. In cold weather, put on pantyhose, yes, the Army men where pantyhose in the winter to stay warm. It creates a air layer between the skin and cotton layer. Try it!
The Talimena scenic byway runs from Mena ro Talahina with lots of hills and no traffic. Beautiful for bike riding. I don’t want to mention one of our favorite campgrounds is along that byway, but it’s initials are Winding Stair! We we there last weekend camping and riding bikes when that big storm came thru.
Wow it looks more like a bomb blast than a plane crash ! I can’t imagine the terrible site for the people that located the crash 💜 I hope the tick preventative worked! God bless you and Happy Easter!! He is risen 🙏
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was a cleanup vid, then I read the title and was concerned that y'all were doing a plane crash clean up lol I was like "that's pretty hardcore" lol. But seriously great vid! Glad y'all got to experience that! And get some exercise in while you did it. That seemed like a crazy hike!
That was bear scat next to the salamander. Speaking from my Alaska experiences, Cody, would it hurt to pack a mossburg 500 pump with slugs and or buckshot. They're affordable and you can throw it over your shoulder with the sling going across your chest. Or just carry it with safty on and none in the barrel. Springtime, when the black bear moms are coming out of the dens with littles can get surprised and attack first with questions later. Something to think about. Wish you well and thanks for taking us along!
We have a B52 crash site here in Maine, It crashed in the winter of 1963( the year I was born) it's a memorial site. The site you hiked to, looks so much like it. Thank you for taking us along.
I am so excited to have a LONG video guys !!! I look forward to your videos and just don't get enough when they are short. Great hike. Thanks so much for sharing !!!
On Philmont scout ranch there is a plane crash from back during WWII. We hiked up there with the scouts and they all stood on the wing and "Pee'd off. The pictures taken (on purpose) make one think it was in the air, seeing the mountains in the distance. On the way up I was wondered why there were still parts there. But as I found out. wheels and engines weigh too much for people to carry them off. Interesting day hike.
This is so sad prayers to all the families that lost their love ones that day . I would of felt the same Coty that eerie feeling sets in . Thanks so sharing Happy Easter from your friend in Michigan Tam 💜💜
Great hike in a beautiful area! It was so sad viewing the wreckage. I can't imagine what they went through. 😢 Cody looks great in that hat! 🔥 Well really, you both wear them well!! 🤠
I really enjoy your videos. My wife and I will take delivery on a pop up truck camper in November. Yes, long wait. Retiring from the USFS I appreciate your perspective on the forest.
You two are such Troopers! I love your channel and vide. I'm 55 and have already had a total hip replacement. Hiking, a professional dog trainer and walker. Skiing, snowboarding, ECT. So i understand pain and the value of stretching!! So important. I have also discovered CBD cream. I'm not a fan of CBD oil though. It doesn't penitrate as well. Stafe Travels and Peace. God Bless as well. Happy Easter Sunday ❣️
That was quite a hike. When you said you were trying to find a plane crash, I got sad just hearing it and I would not have gone. Places like that affect me deeply with an immense sadness. I'm glad you expressed your feelings once you got there. Yes, those steep downhills are tough on the body, especially when its off trail. That pizza looked fabulous. Now I'm hungry for balsamic chicken pizza!!!
Using I. R. Wayright’s post and finding it in Wikipedia: September 27, 1973: Texas International Airlines Flight 655, a CV-600, crashed into a mountain at night time near Mena, Arkansas, killing all 11 on board in the deadliest (and only fatal) accident involving the Convair 600. A probe blamed the captain for not using all the navigation aids available to him and deviating from the preplanned route.
I love your hiking videos! Kelly I agree, I'm always intrigued by that sort of thing too...like what in the world?! It always feels amazing after a brutal hike like that, like you did something good for body mind and soul. Also...I think I see a truck camper in my future.
I just watched a Lynard Skynard documentary. They found a piece of that plane when they went to the site. That one hit hard. So much talent gone in an instant.
I first came to El Dorado in 1977, people were still talking about the crash. I didn't know it was off a hiking trail though. My wife and I have it on our list for the fall, it's past hiking season for us now, too many biting bugs and ticks! We switch to catching bass and tennis this time of year, or drive out west or up north to find cooler climes.
Paranormal investigators were up there & said it was haunted , . Have you experienced any attachment phenomena ? Y’all have sage to cleanse & that’s good . Keep up the good times😊
Strange feelings as one walks upon hallowed ground. Final moment images might flash before your mind’s eye. Screams of terror might haunt one’s imagination. 🛩 🎚 🙏
It's called spatial disorientation. It happens when flying in conditions where ground reference isn't visible, such as in the clouds. VFR flight into IMC is a big killer in aviation. .
I hiked up to the plane crash not long after it happened, sad, the last part of the recorder was co pilot saying the minimum altitude is 2600 feet, then silence as they met the mountain. I have also hiked the Black Fork Mountain trail another time and spent some time cleaning out an old spring.
That was certainly a good trail, guys 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻, tiring but awesome getaway 🏔️😍. Do you get to see a picture or something of the model of that plane? Congrats for this great video 👏🏻
Y'all are awesome! I recently found you guys and have been loving all of your videos, especially as an AR native! I am already making a list of places to explore based on y'alls videos! I am curious if Cody has a background in Geology or if he just enjoys it as a hobby? He is so knowledgeable about the geology of AR (and in general) and that is one of my favorite aspect of your videos!
I found out that the term hobo actually came after the Civil War. Southern soldiers found their homes destroyed. The picked up farm tools, mostly hoes, and traveled farm to farm looking for work. They were called Hoe Boys, later shorten to Hobos.
The crash site should have some sort of memorial erected there to pay respects to those lost. As a genealogist, it would be nice to document the lives lost. I saw some other RUclips videos of this crash from 2018 and I'm shocked and proud that folks haven't vandalized things.
I think the idea is to TRY to spook the bears. It did look like bear scat. That plane really made a hard landing. There are crashes like that all over California because of all the military bases during WWII where you have inexperienced pilots, no radar and very high mountains rising out of the desert. That looked like a death march.
There was also a National Guard helicopter that crashed near the area of flight 655 while searching for the plane. All three guardsmen on board perished.
I have watched you two for years, love your adventures and cooking outside ! One thing though, I have to ask can you practice saying the vowels in Spanish words a bit? :) For ex.: El Dorado has a long a in it, like El Dor-ah-do. It's just always frustrated me that Americans often don't respect other languages by learning some of the basics. OR is that how they or you all say it in TX?! Maybe I'm wrong! I'm here in NM and for ex., Maps says the streets and names down here completely wrong and it sounds funny. Most importantly though, have fun 🤩
Can I purchase the hat Kelly was wearing? I love it! Thanks u guys for sharing your journey..🙏🕊️I bought the cookbook and that hat looks dope on Kelly, I’m sure not as good on me but I’d like one!
What do you use to film? There’s a difference when I watch on our smart TV, our 4K renders the picture over exposed. Either way I enjoy your work and adventures!
So Cody I recently bought 5 acres in ozarks of Missouri.. it has pretty big wet weather creek on it … any tips on things and or signs of interesting things to look for !! Love your videos

That is not a small plane. That was a larger plane, probably 8 passenger or more. All the pieces that you see with holes are non structural pieces like seat backs and bottoms to make the plane lighter. Also wing struts are also perforated to be strong but light. That is hallowed ground for sure.
I have visited a crash site in the Smoky Mountains. I felt the same as you did, Cody. Realizing that people died at the site becomes humbling. I felt that same way at the 911 Memorial. These sites become sacred ground.

Thanks nomossrock. I was wondering who gave up the ghost on that desolate mountain side. It's a story that should be told.
Wow! Thank ya'll for sharing this with us. Watching this on Easter Sunday and praying for their families!

I've always wanted to hike that ridge too! Our family had all the reunions at Queen Wilhelmina Lodge. Love that place!

The sunset was so very stunning.
So gorgeous and so peaceful and meditative to watch !! Thank you so much !!
Gosh darn i love most of yalls videos but the Arkansas ones are always just extra special
The pond is probably a wildlife waterhole put in by the US Forest Service.
Tried The Ouachitas after watching the video, Spot On !! Pizza was awesome!!
You find the most perfect camp spots the sunset was gorgeous. Take care
The last few shots with the sunsetting and Cody's hat/jacket combo looks like some vintage footage right out of the 70s! Another cool video, thanks!
Cool hike. Thanks for sharing!
I do highly respect your relationship exactly as it is.
Very Sad Plane Crash😢Very Beautiful Hike And Scenery Thank You For Sharing....The Restauraunt Looked So Cool And Very Warm❤

I'll bet that shelter is COOL in the snow
I started to feel really sad when you got to the crash site. 🥺
While we were at Gettysburg I got a tick on my neck. The fun part is checking each other for ticks.

The Boy Scouts would camp there. It is an Adirondack, great for camping.
Very awesome! Did you see the fairy that came zooming by Kelly’s face at 22:29 though!
Pssst... the 'spongey fungi succulent-like plant' is actually reindeer lichen 😊✌

Fantastic thumbnail and filming folks, this upload is just fantastic. So nicely narrated, simply enjoyable piece of cinematography!

I just watched a Lynard Skynard documentary. They found a piece of that plane when they went to the site. That one hit hard. So much talent gone in an instant.

Cool, cool! That was a great tag-along and educational as well! Thanks! Happy Easter🐣 Safe travels till next time🌞✌
ive always loved reading about the crash on black fork mtn. its also one of the few rock glaciers i believe but could be wrong on that in Arkansas.
Great video! That was quite a hike. That pizza looks so good. I may have to have some for dinner!
loved it straight up.
My perfect pizza is xtra- large Half double mushroom and pepperoni and half ham, pineapple and artichoke. Yours looks yummy 5hough!

Thats so cool
I was visiting a cousin in Alabama, and we went hiking and found remitments of a plane crash!
It would be neat to post a marker there with the story and names of the people involved. Sadly, I bet people have taken away most of the wreckage.
Oh my those pizza’s made my mouth water. Did the tea tree and witch hazel work?
We didn’t have any ticks

Wonder if HoBo Shoestring is riding that train?

QUESTION. did tea tree oil work against ticks?
We didn’t have any ticks so I’m assuming it did
Enjoyed your video. I have visited the Patsy Cline and fellow artists in Camden Tn. You’d enjoy.
So Cody I recently bought 5 acres in ozarks of Missouri.. it has pretty big wet weather creek on it … any tips on things and or signs of interesting things to look for !! Love your videos
Your property is either on the Salem Plateau or Springfield Plateau. Both are ancient sea beds and you could possibly find marine life fossils.
Appreciate it
What camera do you use primarily to record on?
Go pro 11 and iPhone 14
Happy Easter!! What are y'all eating??
Lamb chops!
Thanks for sharing this video. What backpack is Cody using and does he like it? TIA
It’s north face. Do I like it? It gets the job done. It’s not a backpacker.
I know I would feel odd coming across something like that
When I was a kid an Airforce plane crashed on the other side of a near by creek

@@CodyandKellie thanks!
Compare these trails to Colorado? It’s not crazy crowded there or is it?

When are y'all going to be back in Texarkana?
We will be in and out for a while
@DomeLife I live an hour from Texarkana. One day soon, I want to drive up and meet y'all. Maybe meet somewhere for lunch.
pretty sure that was bear scat
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😀
This is a fairly large commuter flight and not a personal plane. 11 people perished. Of course y'all probably know this.
