I'm not sure what his reasoning was, even if everything burned down, there would only be two identifiable bodies, and it would be obvious that he was the culprit.
This is what happens when a mentally ill person isolates themselves too much. If he had divorced his wife and gone off to live in his bunker, I doubt anyone would have bothered him. But he was ill so he couldn't see how wild his thoughts were.

A psychopath has no moral compass, but they still have the intellectual capacity to understand societal rules and laws, which makes them a lesser of two evils in this situation.
