I was aboard the USS Coral Sea (CV-43) World Cruise '83 when your squadron was flying final F-4Ns then aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) when i saw same VF-154s first F-14A during carrier quals. So back in 2003 was final flight for F-14As with VF-154, time flys!

Dear F-14 community: Other than through an emergency ejection, was it even possible to open the canopy while the aircraft was in flight? Was there not an automated safety lock which prevents the jettison lever from functioning while the aircraft was above a certain altitude, or perhaps once the landing gear was retracted? Thank you.

I believe the canopy jettison handle was operational at all stages of flight. Rapid depressurisation, whilst definitely uncomfortable, is not lethal unless at extreme altitudes that often exceed operational altitudes of the F-14, thus there was no reason to prevent the pilot from jettisoning the canopy. In fact, during irrecoverable spins it is far safer to initially jettison the canopy before ejection rather than simply ejecting, because as most people are familiar with due to the classic that was Top Gun, collision with the ejected canopy can occur when the aircraft has a near zero ground speed.

I have a question: can there be ALR-67 Indicators in some F-14As?
Is it that the ALR-67 Indicators added in F-14As with an antenna attached on the portside nosewheel-bay door?

Wait, I don’t understand. At 0:19 and 3:11 in the video, there’s a ALR-67 indicator in both the RIO and Pilot cockpit. I thought it was only on the F-14B. Can anyone explain to me, that are there some F-14As equipped with an ALR-67 Indicator? I mostly know the F-14A cockpit. But are there modifications in an F-14A cockpit that matches the capabilities of the F-14B? (TF30 engines does not count)

F-14As in the 2000s were basically upgraded to F-14B standards. They had PTID in the back, DFCS, the new RWRs, LANTIRN and A/G capability.

Kinda of a hybrid. I like that. These F-14As still get the job done. Mixture of modern and nostalgia.
