Don't forget there was the Grumman XF10F Jaguar, which was a prototype swing-wing fighter aircraft offered to the United States Navy in the early 1950s. Although it never entered service, its research paved the way toward the later General Dynamics F-111 and Grumman's own F-14 Tomcat.

F-14 could arguably be the best "air superiority" fighter. It actually has recorded wartime dogfight wins against Russian made Migs in relatively fair fights.
Outside of Iranian service the number of engagements that could be described as anywhere near "fair" (i.e not against newbie pilots in obsolete aircraft) can literally be counted on one hand. In Iranian service it did well at first, but eventually ended up going up against more modern types like MiG 25s and Mirage F1s who shot down more than 20 of them.
Sometimes you just gotta appreciate how we humans went from hunting, gathering and making stone tools to building metal boxes and sitting in them and controlling them while they fly several kilometers above the ground and shoot radar-guided missiles. ...Just sadly all in the name of war. Humanity has always been too good at killing ... itself.

Tempted to say it's another F-14, that's also not a HUD, the HUD is the digital display on the frame in front of the pilot, where older planes would have a (gyro) gunsight.
Does the iconic swingwing capability that the Tomcat had have any considerable benefits that would warrant a return in any coming models? Like a 6th gen swingwing stealth fighter or something. Open question
Wings open=more lift. wings closed=more speed. The extra lift from wings open could possibly just be done with directed thrust nozzles like the Harrier used to. It's a shame, but I'm pretty sure the swing wing design is dead. A Tomcat/Harrier hybrid might be interesting, but it'll never happen.
Best looking of its time. But best of its time when on average you need 50 hrs of maintenance per flight hour? Coupled with a weak engine and a unique missile that might be long range but would be of little value against a maneuvering target you could almost call it the lemon of its time. But it sure was photogenic and starred in the best military recruiting film ever.
@@dutch24 Not true. From the original 557 F-14As, only 48 were converted to F-14B standard and 18 F-14As were remanufactured to F-14D standard. When you add the newly build 38 F-14Bs & 37 F-14Ds you can work out that 75% of the total F-14 fleet where underpowered F-14 As with the troublesome TF30. Furthermore the F110 equipped F14A+ (re-designated F14B) and F14D models only entered production in March 1987. I don’t know what you call, rivaling planes but in January 1976, the first F15 Eagle destined for a combat squadron was delivered.
