At 1:36 Freddie and Roger start with the "ahhhs" but it's at 1:45 when Brian adds another harmony that you get that classic Queen vocal texture. Loved it
If you wanna be exact the harmony builds because Brian starts singing but also because Freddie stops singing the melody an octave under roger and starts harmonizing instead. But I'm just being nitpicky 😅😁
The most amazing thing about this performance is Roger's falsetto harmony in the middle 8. When it turns out the drummer in the band can pull off a note like that, everyone else may as well give up.
This video makes me so happy! Fred seems so relaxed Brian looks all proud like aww his song Roger's voice is amazing especially cause it's LIVE okay they don't show John enough but he's keeping them all together!
@@edgarferrer8084 I don't think so. this was never official released as a concert, so I doubt the overdub was recorded at the time. and roger last his falsetto just a few years later, so I doubt they would have been able to overdub it.
Freddie and Roger's falsettos are killing me. Plus I don't understand why people say this song is better when sung by Brain. Both Freddie and Brian present different versions of this song. Brian's is a sad and smooth version. Freddie has a energetic and repenting version.
Lyrics for all Queen Fans: In the year of '39 assembled here the volunteers In the days when lands were few Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn The sweetest sight ever seen And the night followed day And the story tellers say That the score brave souls inside For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas Ne'er looked back, never feared, never cried Don't you hear my call though you're many years away Don't you hear me calling you Write your letters in the sand For the day I take your hand In the land that our grandchildren knew In the year of '39 came a ship in from the blue The volunteers came home that day And they bring good news of a world so newly born Though their hearts so heavily weigh For the earth is old and grey, little darling, we'll away But my love this cannot be For so many years have gone though I'm older but a year Your mother's eyes, from your eyes, cry to me Don't you hear my call though you're many years away Don't you hear me calling you Write your letters in the sand for the day I take your hand In the land that our grandchildren knew Don't you hear my call though you're many years away Don't you hear me calling you All your letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand For my life Still ahead Pity me
Hey, I'm 62. I heard this song on SiriusXM Deep Tracks. I was quickly taken by it. Perhaps I'd loved the song once before. But I never knew that this song is way over 40 years old. Oh to have seen them live in the 70s.
I love how at the end of the initial part he plays something along the lines of love of my life and then goes, "this has nothing to do with the next song" and then just blasts off!!
Last week I told my smart speaker to play songs of queen - and it played '39. I knew that song and have heard it so many times; but I didn't know it was Queen. Great song and great voice of Brian - but also I like Freddie's version 😍
I still have a colour photograph of Queen performing '39 at the front of the stage at Glasgow's Apollo Theatre in 1977 (and during their '79 tour when they came back to the Apollo!)
Never have I heard Queen singing that good. '39 is an outstanding song, no doubt, but the performance of that song in this video is a class of its own. Hans Rosenthal (A.H.R.D.)
Rogers smile & grin from 2:06…. how his smile reminds me of a little boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar…. oh my 47 years since then & he still makes me…. 🤤 wish I was that cookie jar!

I'm horrified and disturbed by the fact that I'm 42 years old, and I'm hearing this ridiculously awesome song for the very first time today.
