I personally wouldn’t call him “average”. He, along with John, has been called “a colossal sonic volcano whose eruption makes the earth tremble”, so he is definitely not an “average” drummer. Not the best, there are people far better, but certainly not even close to just being average.

Then I read Joe Elliot said they were going to figure out a way for him to play drums with his feet ( not in those words) and I remember thinking, (wtf? You don't keep a one armed drummer. Then once I saw him playing again he blew me away. Some people turn their hardships into triumph. Rick is an inspiration to the world. Much respect.

Had a nice conversation with him, too. Told a couple work stories, mentioned going to a couple of Queen gigs when they were still performing in bars, and I found out Harold May had a nickname. As the guy left the record store that day, he said, "Remember, Harry May!" That was probably the greatest day of this year for me so far, besides getting my first guitar last week, and I'll never forget it.😌

And although he still lead sang some of his songs (A Kind Of Magic, These Are The Days, ...), you can see that his voice started to lose its prime. And Queen songs are hard to sing, especially for Roger’s age. So it’d be totally reasonable as to why Roger doesn’t front Queen
Roger always admitted he was nowhere near Freddie’s level of vocal skill. And Roger rightly gives Adam credit for being a better singer than he is/was (you can dislike Adam all you want, but anyone with an ounce of musical training will tell you his vocal skills are impressive). At his peak, Roger couldn’t sing a lot of Queen songs. He always had trouble singing low, his supersonic falsetto was gone by his 40s, and his voice, while still right on pitch, has gotten very thin with age. And so you know where I am coming from, though I love Freddie, and LOVE Queen as a whole, Roger is hands-down my favourite. I get annoyed to no end when people praise Freddie, but ignore Roger’s contributions. I think he absolutely was underrated (unnoticed) as a singer. I love the sound of his voice at every age, but he could never be a lead singer now.

I seek out every little snippet where you can clearly hear his voice. Not easy, because Freddie’s mic is, for obvious reasons, pushed to the front of the sound.

And he demonstrated it , I couldn’t believe it. You can’t comprehend how good RT is and it’s just natural to him 🥁❤️ 🎤 and he’s a great drummer too who has his own style. If it come to lead singer I could have been Roger or Brian or both, their voice is better than anyone else. Brian, Roger and Freddie told in a documentary: Brian: We had a gift. We had three voices really blended instantly. Freddie had this wonderful crystal clear sharp vocal sound Roger: Naturally I have got the powerful high voice Freddie: He has got the dog whistle pich, very high voice Brian: I have got the warm sound - I suppose. If you put the 3 voice together it sounded some kind of paravision. Yes, Roger was just absolutely amazing, singing at the drumm. They were equaly good. Freddie was the best showman and had the most amazing voice, but the three of them together made it so-so wonderful.
Fantastic drummer, fantastic backing vocalist. Not sure many people realise just how musically skilful it was to do both to such a brilliant level that Roger did. A superb rock vocalist in his own right, he complemented Freddie perfectly.
The guy had when he was younger an incredible high register tenor voice and a extraordinary wide vocal range. Still today he's above many younger singers technically and what comes to pitch accuracy. An admirable, unique voice indeed

Brian: I have got the warm sound - I suppose. If you put the 3 voice together it sounded some kind of paravision. Yes, Roger was just absolutely amazing, singing at the drumm. They were equaly good. Freddie was the best showman and had the most amazing voice, but the three of them together made it so-so wonderful.

Fantastic drummer, fantastic backing vocalist. Not sure many people realise just how musically skilful it was to do both to such a brilliant level that Roger did. A superb rock vocalist in his own right, he complemented Freddie perfectly.

The guy had when he was younger an incredible high register tenor voice and a extraordinary wide vocal range. Still today he's above many younger singers technically and what comes to pitch accuracy. An admirable, unique voice indeed
I always felt like they made the perfect band because you had Roger's heavy metal voice, Brian's "hair band" voice, and Freddie's voice, that defies genre. Put them all together, and it's pure magic!
