I was skating today, and having sooo much fun, loving my set up right now... Blank 8.5 Indy hollow 149’s 54mm bones stf And a fresh pair of van’s Feeling good!
So much wisdom. I locked into my "perfect setup" back in the late 90's, and I just couldn't skate transition at all with a low street board, nor could I ollie super high with low trucks and a flat board. I could do tech flatground and curb tricks for days, but struggled with ledges over a foot high, even if the curb version was easy. I always wondered why I could do switch flippidy tricks way easier than friends that rode larger boards, and sucked ass at taller ledges when I could back tail a curb and steeze it out for a long slide with a blindfold on. I'm sure a pro could get on a department store plastic board and land a laser flip it in three tries. I was ok at skating, but never amazing. I know nothing, Jon Snow.
"Kyle Walker you don't ride this board" killed me. I got sent some stuff by a homie at DLX a few years ago and one of the boards had a post it that said "Kyle" on it NOW I'M NOT SAYING I got a board from his pile, probably not, but that's absolutely what I tell myself.
My perfect setup. 8" Moose blank, Thunders standard, 52 mini logo wheels, any bones bearing. I've rode many pro and blank decks over the years and always go back to blanks because they're way cheaper and I can't really tell a difference in my skating or the quality. I used to love the Shuvit decks when they were still around.
What you said is spot on what I realized watching Caleb Barnett on hockey. It's why I started skating the 8.18-8.25 hockey shape. He's super tall but feet close together and laid back style. Some of the ones from psstix measure out with a 13.89 wheelbase 31.5 it's crazy at 6 foot 3 but has helped alot with controlling my upper body and relaxing.
I just finished riding my second deluxe full SE shape. The first one was an anti-hero 8.12 with the Full Kicks and 14 inch wheelbase. I loved it so much. My second was the 8.06 Real Full SE. I'm also taller and grew up skating in the 2000s on probably 14 inch wheelbase. I think you are right about the muscle memory on smaller boards it's like home. I think you look so comfortable on the smaller boards. You still rip on the big burly ones too though. Thanks for everything you do Ben super inspiring.
To be honest I've seen you go down in board size and seen that your finding your Gold set up more and more every time your change your set up...the wheel base and type of boards plays a role in your choices.....and I find that interesting.....your trick selections combined with your ledge tricks are really looking smooth... hopefully u find your perfect set up soon
Emmanuel to each their own. i prefer 14 for the super consistent pop but i must admit it is less stable on transition. i can go all the way to 14.5 but have to adjust the pop & flick super hard off the nose or you’re gonna have rocket flips. 14.375 is a pretty good sweet spot
I've been rocking a Primitive 8.125, Thunder 148s, and OJ 54 mini combo. Riding it just feels right, transition and flat have never been so good. Before I had a Flip deck and thought the flatness of it was great but my Primitive was a whole other beast.
I specially bought thunder 148mm(titanium i was scared of bigger heavier trucks) to try that primitive 8.125 shape ( havent try yet) but i try the 8.25 mcclung and really love it!
I love when a setup gives you the laidback feeling, so much confidence in all your tricks in effort, need to ask my shop for the SE but a 1 or 2 concave
That Gonz toque is sick. I just started skating again after a few years off the board and your videos are helping me find the inspiration again. I moved to Australia from Alberta a couple weeks ago, and don’t have anyone to skate with so it’s usually solo sessions for as long as I can stand the heat. Not gunna lie, being 28 I find skating scarier then ever, definitely don’t have the confidence of my teen years anymore. Your videos push me to keep trying to relearn my old bag of tricks. Thanks dude, really love the content.
3:30 i totally feel u on that ive been skating anti hero past 2 boards and its like i don’t really try as hard with a higher concave board, plus deluxe has tons of pop
You really just look more comfortable in general on the thinner boards. seems like the decks around 8.0 you are certainly more comfortable on than the larger boards. You inspired me to change my setup which I was rocking for 10 years. Switching from 8.5 down to 8.25 made a huge positive difference in all respects and i'm looking to try 8.1 next. The Thunders instead of the Indy's are mad fun too, so thank you for getting me to try some different stuff out

Ben Degros Hello Ben, which trucks do you like more? The independent titaniums or the thunder titaniums? Which are better? Thank you for your videos! I love them!
Just found your channel today and had never thought about the space between bolts and lip going up, and many other things you mentioned. When we were young we would just eye ball it. Nice vid ben. I can tell you were having a lot of fun with this setup which is cool to watch. Im skating my first powell flight deck right now, the salman agah 242 shape. Absolutely love it! Venture OG 5.2 lo’s and forumla 4 53 classics. Keep shreddin!
From what I've seen in your skating moving down to 8 inch has helped with the tricks. It feels like every video you're stomping more stuff. Also feels like I hadn't seen you do a lot of flips of out of manuals till recently either.
Yes! You've been improving a lot lately, keep killing it Ben! Btw I (almost) found my setup too, thanks to your vids, girl Mike mo 8.25 (flat and almost twin tail), thunder 148 team hollow and 54mm bones v5...it's being a dream.
I would like to get a review on tensor mag lights. We all know they are the lightest, but I’ve never met anyone who actually rides them and everyone just says they’re weak. I would like to know what you think and also all the math you do with the trucks.
14.25 Wheel Base - 55mm Height Indys - 50-52mm Spitfire New Formula. Wheel Base and Truck Height are the most critical considerations for Optimal center of gravity. In my humble opinion. Bones Medium Bushings with Indy top washers as bottom and top washers with a little cotton swab of extra virgin olive oil in the pivot cup. Thank me later 😆
I prefer parrafine (candle wax) over everything oily in my pivot cups and between bushings and metal. Just rub it on the pivot and the bushings/washers before reassembly :)
Yes I totally agree, I'm currently skating 14 wb, thunder 148 52mm height and bones 54mm v5. These are the most important things, the most important being the wb! Switching to 14 wb is the best choice I've ever made.
Ben, you seriously have the best outlook on skating and are super talented. Love the videos. Side note about the perfect setup. I just sized up from 8.06 to 8.125 and seems to be working great. I accidentally bought an 8.125 and skated it for a while, then went back to the Real 8.06 full and it felt like a twig.
I'm going to be on 8.85"x33" krooked decks for the next while; it's nice to know what that roman rumeral means, I remember seeing it when I gripped my deck but didn't know what it meant. I've wanted to maybe try a 8.75 real heavyweight but I have enough decks for the next good while. Thanks for the info.
Dude you should have 4.5 million subs, and braille at 45K. You are a legend that provides much better reviews than anywhere else... And the fact I'm also in my 30s makes your content much more relatable, whereas I find other YT skate channels like Braille are more focused towards the younger kids. Just not my cup of tea. You're a boss Ben.
My first skateboard back in 2014 was a Real 8.0 Dennis Busenitz pro model Killer Carnage deck with regular independent trucks, bones party pack wheels 53mm 101a, bones bearings, shorty hardware and I believe jessup grip tape that my step dad bought me because I was going through the Walmart trucks like no tomorrow, many within the first hour they'll break at the nipple, but I really enjoyed my first actually board and I would like to find another one of them
i would totally love this full SE shape if they made it symmetrical. im stuck on the twin tail but it would be nice if the shape was more full & the wheelbase was shorter. i use venture lo’s to help compensate for a quicker pop. my ideal set up would be if they would make a 8.3-8.75 symmetrical deck with a 14-14.25 wheelbase & mellow kicks. not picky on the concave but i would like it to be super full & squared out. i would stick with the modified venture lo’s(use a soft riser to preserve the deck, replace lower bushing with indy extra soft & remove the top washer so you can carve), hard luck ceramics, mob grip, & 58mm spitfire F4 conical fulls(so i dont have to worry about hitting rocks when bombing hills-you get used to the wheelbite). no one likes how crazy loose my trucks are but i think it helps your skating in a myriad of ways even tho it can make landing tricks harder. also not many people seem to care about the twin tail but i like how you dont have to worry about which side is which & how that basically doubles the life of the deck. especially with the soft riser to prevent pressure cracks.
btw its dope to see you skating Lakai instead of all the nike & nb you usually wear. i love the newport in white leather with the pine green flare. so clean. hope you’re enjoying them! 🤙🏽
I haven't skated a delux board in ages, but I remember riding a Real SE team deck, and that thing was amazing. Going to have to try another one, as someone who likes a medium mellow concave what number do you think i should look for.
Ben, how are you able to find out the meaning of the numbers or initialisms that identify board types, shapes, or where they are in a press? You seem to have a bit of insight into the workings of manufacture.
I got my first primitive and I wonder if the less of the concave has to do with the way it was stamped or which board is on top. or maybe uts just the primitive design
There is definitely a noticeable improvement on style and technicality for your tricks on this setup. I bet if the wheelbase was 14.125" and the length 31.625", it'd be perfect for you. Thanks for the physics tips by the way.
I just went down from a 8.25/8.3 to a 8. It was a big jump that warranted new trucks but it’s so much easier to do tricks on the 8 my sessions have been longer and I’m kicking myself for being on one size for so long
Sick, Im waiting on my 52 mm 99a formula fours with my indy 149s while riding a 8.375 Girl, cause I always love me a wide board... (Except my f4s are the 99a conicals) . Super stoked for my gear to arrive, haven't skated since i tore my ACL and have two pins put in my knee. Your videos give mr all the motivation to keep given er' Ben. My fellow Canadian haha
Great. I've bought the Full SE 8.2 after your first review of it and am really diggin it. Now you like the 99 spitfires better than the 101 in the classic shape? Thx
Could you make a video explaining the shapes and concave. If you already have can you link it? I am pretty confused when pros talk about their set ups and they are always talking about how they love their shape and the concave, but when I go to a shop they say nothing about shape of concave and only the width.
Hey you should do a alltimers deck review. It’s a smaller brand and I would really like to see a review on them. There are currently no reviews I can find on the decks
i ride 139 trucks on an 8.25 deck cos narrower trucks make the board quicker and easier to flip and spin but i find i can get used to any setups any shoes or whatever with a bit of time
Nice review, now time for discussion again :) First a suggestion, if you want to take short wheelbase testing to a new extreme... you might try out the Real Ferguson Cosmo Dots Full, which is quoted 31.5/8.06 with a WB of 13.9". I surely will, but have to grind down the torgersen perimeter first. I'm a less-than-tall guy at 174cm height, and i like the 14" variety of wheelbase. These boards feel less bulky to me, even more when they are shorter, well below 32". The fact about the techy, lower-popping character of the full SE's with the mellow kicks and concave is true, especially with smaller wheels even on standard trucks. When you have problems with higher ledges, resulting in ollieing more into than onto them, try to jump a little more "backwards", so it feels like kicking up the board almost vertically. This makes the back foot kick more forward, in direction of the wheels than straight down to the ground, which lifts your nose higher. Your front foot just needs to allow that, so you gotta pull it "back-up" a little more than usual. Nollies would be jumped more forwardish in this way. Consider the extra time you need to level out the board, to make tricks less rockety. This is making this style needing a little more strength to put into, but it's not making it too exhausting when carried out more often. Might be harder to describe than to just try :) This also helps with getting higher ollies on snowskate decks, which got no trucks but a steep nose/tail...
Interesting. I have been getting progressively more used to it. Even the very next day was even better. It's still not my absolute ideal. I would add a degree or two to the kicks and add 1/8" to the overall length and WB making it 31.625 with 14.125WB. It's so close though. I really love this setup.
@@bendegros These are rare figures, i guess. Most i've seen were 14.25 and 31.75 (and up). I'm just glad that Real offers these SE decks so i started buying them ahead of time if they ever quit making SE models. I wasn't even aware of other decks in this range but the more expensive 242 shapes from powell, not to mention the flight decks before seeing your review of the perimeter. Thanks again :)
Have your fingers ever frozen solid before and can't move them?. I'm from Australia so that might sound like a stupid question. Also I can't do the tricks you do but it is very interesting to hear how subtle differences in decks and trucks effect different tricks.
It doesn't get that cold here but yes in extreme conditions that could happen to someone but it would severely damage your hand. Just google frostbite.
I tried a REAL 8.5 renewal deck and broke it within a month. I went to pop up onto a ledge and when I popped the tail just snapped. I'm thinking it was the material that the Renewal was but I'm wondering if I should try another REAL deck.
Great skating Ben ! I noticed the mellow authority especially when you are doing tricks out of you slides and manuals . 8.06 with 139 nice setup . I wonder if the 144 would be better on transitions but still keep the technical ability? Thank you for your channel .
I think they might be a bit better. One thing I didn't think of is that it was also still only my second day on that deck so I was still adjusting. I would probably feel a little better now that I have had a full week on it.
I’m thinking about getting a 8.18 board with a 14” wheelbase partnered with a pair of Thunder 147 hi’s. I prefer low trucks. But seeing this video, should I go for Indies? Or get a 8.18 with a 14.25 wheelbase with Thunders?
i am currently searching 8.06 boards on ebay thinking it's an odd size i've never come across therefore upon finding same dimension(s), i could be in the clear to find cheaper variations of this deck. I am curious for thoughts and/or advice here Ben as am buying a board or two in the coming days and in Australia that walker deck is 110AUD. Cheers for your time. only found your channel yesterday but have watched and learnt a lot already. will tell the homies about it. Happy skating from east coast downunder!

My favorite setup...any new deck. I wear down decks till there flat plywood.
I accidentally bought an 8.125 and skated it for a while, then went back to the Real 8.06 full and it felt like a twig.
definitely going to pick one up to try it out
I love your explanation of shapes and truck choices per shape. Please make a video about deck to truck ratio
Awesome review as always Mr Degros!
Those Vegan Aussie Blokes as always
Five Hour Energy As always
My first skateboard back in 2014 was a Real 8.0 Dennis Busenitz pro model Killer Carnage deck with regular independent trucks, bones party pack wheels 53mm 101a, bones bearings, shorty hardware and I believe jessup grip tape that my step dad bought me because I was going through the Walmart trucks like no tomorrow, many within the first hour they'll break at the nipple, but I really enjoyed my first actually board and I would like to find another one of them
Awesome set up dude
didn't know u watched uncle ben
@@FaskyzoDesigns I watch all the YT skateboard blokes haha
8.125, ace 44's, 101a 56mm mini cubics on 1/4" risers seems to be working for me. I like the change down from 8.25
i would totally love this full SE shape if they made it symmetrical. im stuck on the twin tail but it would be nice if the shape was more full & the wheelbase was shorter. i use venture lo’s to help compensate for a quicker pop. my ideal set up would be if they would make a 8.3-8.75 symmetrical deck with a 14-14.25 wheelbase & mellow kicks. not picky on the concave but i would like it to be super full & squared out. i would stick with the modified venture lo’s(use a soft riser to preserve the deck, replace lower bushing with indy extra soft & remove the top washer so you can carve), hard luck ceramics, mob grip, & 58mm spitfire F4 conical fulls(so i dont have to worry about hitting rocks when bombing hills-you get used to the wheelbite). no one likes how crazy loose my trucks are but i think it helps your skating in a myriad of ways even tho it can make landing tricks harder. also not many people seem to care about the twin tail but i like how you dont have to worry about which side is which & how that basically doubles the life of the deck. especially with the soft riser to prevent pressure cracks.
btw its dope to see you skating Lakai instead of all the nike & nb you usually wear. i love the newport in white leather with the pine green flare. so clean. hope you’re enjoying them! 🤙🏽
I haven't skated a delux board in ages, but I remember riding a Real SE team deck, and that thing was amazing. Going to have to try another one, as someone who likes a medium mellow concave what number do you think i should look for.
3 or 4
Ben, how are you able to find out the meaning of the numbers or initialisms that identify board types, shapes, or where they are in a press? You seem to have a bit of insight into the workings of manufacture.
I got my first primitive and I wonder if the less of the concave has to do with the way it was stamped or which board is on top. or maybe uts just the primitive design
Looks like a great set up Ben.
There is definitely a noticeable improvement on style and technicality for your tricks on this setup. I bet if the wheelbase was 14.125" and the length 31.625", it'd be perfect for you. Thanks for the physics tips by the way.
The “go skate” part at the end 🤘🏽💯
It reminds me of the shape of an Almost for sure.
How nice that you skate real. Thats my favorit brand😍. 8 allways!
Most underrated skater and channel
This weekly videos always make my day
Great. I've bought the Full SE 8.2 after your first review of it and am really diggin it. Now you like the 99 spitfires better than the 101 in the classic shape? Thx
Could you make a video explaining the shapes and concave. If you already have can you link it? I am pretty confused when pros talk about their set ups and they are always talking about how they love their shape and the concave, but when I go to a shop they say nothing about shape of concave and only the width.
love ur videos and ur skating ! keep doing what u love ❤
Hey you should do a alltimers deck review. It’s a smaller brand and I would really like to see a review on them. There are currently no reviews I can find on the decks
i ride 139 trucks on an 8.25 deck cos narrower trucks make the board quicker and easier to flip and spin but i find i can get used to any setups any shoes or whatever with a bit of time
One of the best skate youtubers i've found... keep it up
I want to skate, but it's already night here.
But will do tomorrow
And I did it...
So much fun to skate
vinza pramana putra nice man (:
Nice review, now time for discussion again :)
First a suggestion, if you want to take short wheelbase testing to a new extreme... you might try out the Real Ferguson Cosmo Dots Full, which is quoted 31.5/8.06 with a WB of 13.9".
Might be harder to describe than to just try :)
This also helps with getting higher ollies on snowskate decks, which got no trucks but a steep nose/tail...
I hate that i have no money, i need to skate cuz my life sucks cuz all i have is skating!
Love ya Benzz thank you so much foe the vid cuz i needed it
Gangster steeze on those first few tricks natural or were you doing a thing?
Have your fingers ever frozen solid before and can't move them?. I'm from Australia so that might sound like a stupid question.
Also I can't do the tricks you do but it is very interesting to hear how subtle differences in decks and trucks effect different tricks.
It doesn't get that cold here but yes in extreme conditions that could happen to someone but it would severely damage your hand. Just google frostbite.
"Kyle Walker you don't ride this board" had me lolling
Or get a 8.18 with a 14.25 wheelbase with Thunders?
stick with thunder high 147 if you prefer low trucks. They aren't even high.
Ben Degros thanks ben!
do the pro's actually use the same board that go to production? or do they have a personalized board made specifically for them?
Love your videos man!
Your skating has def gotten better since I started watching
Try out a quasi deck ! I’m skating one in 8.25. it’s sick, unlike anything I’ve ever skated
Holy shut just noticed your in the UBC skatepark lol I went there when I was in Vancouver for a summer a few years back
Inspirational, good stuff
Been watching more of your vids recently, skating is so good
i am currently searching 8.06 boards on ebay thinking it's an odd size i've never come across therefore upon finding same dimension(s), i could be in the clear to find cheaper variations of this deck.
Oh never mind. I've figured out the SE scenario. sorry to waste your time.
In these days , I'm skate longboard , but I d like make street skate board .
I'm thinking about deck 8.5 and size truck 149s ( I'm doubt 159s) for may firt street skate .
P.s I'm 6"1' and sneakers size 13 .
Hey would you try a Santa Cruz deck. Maybe the taper tip one ?
Your vids always have such a great vibe!!!
Thank you!
that deck is beautiful! i really dig it
Love watching these videos! Gonna have to find a indoor parking garage to skate!
That manual part had me dying laughing
