Adding a bit of dark wood for the nose and hooves? ADORABLE! Such attention to detail! Of course, for every 12 normal ones you have to make one with a reddish nose...
Paduak -- paduak or pterocarpus (depending on where you live) wood has a distinct red hue that would be perfect for the Rudolf sculpture. Thanks for your kind words.
@@WorkshopCompanion just made my first few. Now everyone wants one. They are amazing. Great way to get rid of the scraps Ive had for soo many years. Need more clamps though lol
I usually set it to a fairly slow speed -- 900 to 1500 rpm. The finer the grit, the slower the speed. If you don't give the abrasive time to clear the dust, it will load up and burn the wood.
This is the most enjoyable, RUclips video I’ve watched in years. I lost focus on what you were doing and just enjoy the show. 🤣 now to find some templates.
Ellis Reeves here. I learned of your channel from Scott of "My Growth Rings." I purchased a used SS in 2017 and watch the videos you did while working there. Have learned a lot from you about how to use the various components. I am 85 so don't have much time left to enjoy SS, so will be watching you here to glean all I can.
@Gary Thanks ever so much. At the present time I am staying busy as I have been blessed with 4 great grandbabies 2 girls & 2 boys. I am making each one a bedroom set from Wood plans. Trouble is my grand kids are having babies faster than I can make the furniture. Have a blessed day.
I first published the patterns for these in Hands On! magazine when I was editor -- they've been around for a long time. But the different colors of wood is a new touch.
are you sanding at a low rpm. I bought both of your patterns (deer and sled) love cutting the wholes first with forstner bit saves a lot of time. Thanks for your information and templates.
Thanks a lot for the video. These are really great. I have made a few but i am keep breaking my bandsaw blades (einhell). Have tried with oak and then pine as i thought it was due to oak being hard but the result was the same. Any tips?
You may be using a blade that's too wide to turn the corners without stress -- a 1/4" (6 mm) blade will just barely make the turns. Or you're attempting to saw thick stock with a normal blade. The gullets of a normal blade aren't deep enough to clear the sawdust when cutting stock over 3/4" (19 mm) thick. The chips pack in the gullets increasing the friction, and the blade heats up and breaks. Try a 3/16" (4 mm) 4 TPI skip-tooth blade.
Could this be made differently, like one stand the opposite of the other and one standing straight looking forward? I bought your plans for this and it’s turned out good. Thanks
There are some reindeer patterns around with the deer looking forward. You might want to consult these to see how or if this design could be so modified.
I humbly apologize. I first published this project in 1979, and ever since it has eaten up valuable time in Santa's workshops across the globe. I've even seen a version where the craftsman/elf installed a red LED in the deer's nose!
Is there any reason the wood for the nose and the wood for the antlers has to be the full width of the board? Seems to me to be wasted wood. Unless I’m missing something there’s probably enough to do at least one more reindeer out of the parts that are cut away.
Use 1/4" skip tooth (6 tpi) or 3/16" (10 tpi). If you don't drill the holes for the antlers and the legs, you'll need the smaller blade to negotiate the tight curves.
If it's your first, look to the used market. (1) Since tools don't wear out like other consumer goods, you get more band saw for your bucks. (2) You get to know the saw inside and out because the troll who had it before you trashed it and now you have to clean it, restore it, and re-align it. (3) If it isn't what you wanted, you don't have that much money invested. But you still have the experience and you're no one tool wiser. As for brands, I have had good experiences with Shopsmith, Delta, Craftsman, Grizzly, and Atlas, all from the last half of the twentieth century.
Great Project, Love the Reindeer, I have made 4 from your plans so far. Do you have a sleigh plan by chance or know where I might find one. keep up the great work.

Absolutely. We keep a stash of bright red padauk handy just for that (and Santa's suit).
Thank a lot! Now my wife thinks that the whole family needs a few of these. That's what I get for making something that everyone likes.
Our apologies. It's hard being the hero. Your shop time goes to hell in a handbasket when folks start expecting a little woodworking...;-)
This video is being used to convince my wife into buying a band saw!
Thanks you!
That's what it's there for.

omg. that drill with the sanding drum. Genious!
I was just gonna say is that a drill press with a sanding drum??!?!? How fast is it spinning

I'm not far behind you, Ellis. But I find a great way to stay young is to keep working wood. Thanks!

I love these, and remember them from an old Shopsmith demonstration. I like how you changed it up with the lighter wood for its antlers. 👍🏼

Neat reboot, Nick. You sure do know how to make some doe! Also, nice technique on that Shopsmith bandsaw. Scott
Just trying to make a fair buck, Scott. (You were expecting that comeback, weren't you? What a perfect set-up.)
Awesome! What a nice video. Thank you.
This is amazing 👍
Thanks.
I really like what you made. I got the print and downloaded it immediately. Since I do wood carving, I can hand carve this out also.
I'd love to see a carved version. Can you send a photo through out web site?
Sure I will send you a picture. I just started wood carving in June 2023 but I really like the reindeer for Christmas.@@WorkshopCompanion
You make it look so easy.
That's my job. And it is.
Nice work. Thanks for sharing, Sir.
Most welcome.
That is really cool Nick! Thanks for the great video. 👍
Thanks for the kind words, Mark
Beautiful!
Nice. I've made some for family.
Great job have you watched Alex Snodgrass make his? Also love all your Wright brothers stuff.
really nice work ! Love this technique (I've done it myself but with a scrollsaw)
Much thanks.
A lovely piece of work .....Made in Denmark ,,,,,, ooops ... no.the US .... Top marks Mr .....

Very nice work! Subscribed.
You're welcome -- and welcome.
When ordering a 3/16" blade for this project, how many tpi would you recommend?
4 tpi. See Timber Wolf: timberwolfblades.com/proddetail.php?prod=31604PC
Really Nice..
Thanks.

fantastic project. you should invest in a nicer band saw blade for doing such precision cuts.
Is it best to use green oak or fully seasoned oak?
If you use green oak, you'll run the risk of the sculpture distorting and cracking as the wood dries.
чудесно, я в восторге, золотые руки
Как ты сказал.
What speed do you have on the drill press?
460 RPM -- as low as it goes. Otherwise, sawdust packs in the gullets between the teeth on the holesaw and burns.
Great Project, Love the Reindeer, I have made 4 from your plans so far.
Do you have a sleigh plan by chance or know where I might find one. keep up the great work.
No sleigh plan just yet . I'll ask Santa to bring me some for Christmas. And thanks.
What did you finish that with Workshop Companion?
Minwax Tung oil. - Travis
hiya, what type of oil do you use on your reindeer please
A mixture of tung oil; and spar varnish -- see ruclips.net/video/0z_xHK4-3cI/видео.html

I'm from Indonesia..what is the width of the band saw in the video...please answer🙏🙏🙏
Use a 4mm or 6mm skip-tooth blade -- 4mm if you want to cut all the curves rather than drill some of them.
