- Guitar royalty Kfir Ochaion shows us how he dialed in the perfect Prince tone for the legendary Purple Rain solo!
We filmed this at TGU19 using the GrandMeister Deluxe 40 amp, and Kfir picked a Music Man Steve Morse signature guitar to get the sounds down...

GrandMeister Deluxe 40: hughes-and-kett....
#hughesandkettner #kfirochaion #grandmeisterdeluxe40 #tgu19
Kfir has amazing ears, you can tell he’s spent countless hours chasing all these guitar sounds and has developed a great understanding of how to get the sound he hears.
Oh, 100%! And watching him do this live in the room is a pretty cool experience :)
For the guitar he used his mad cat guitar it was recorded live at first ave in 1983..
Thanks for the extra info!
Where are the settings please?
For a second i thought you guys were playing through that combo on the floor. I was so excited. If you make a grandmeister in combo that would be the perfect amp for so many people including myself
Sorry to get your hopes up! We do get a lot of requests for a GrandMeister combo... maybe one day we'll have to make one :) Give the Black Spirit combo a try if you ever get the chance though - it's also pretty darn good!
Rock on,
Team H&K
This is awesome. It sounds geat
what a great musician i loved the video!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers Ron, and yes, Kfir is an incredible musician!
Great tone! However missed one key component of the signature prince sound which is a fairly loud slap back delay
Interesting. We certainly didn't miss it in the sound - guess the chorus and gain hide subtler things like a slapback a bit anyway. But we'll tell Kfir for next time ;)
I know this was a year ago but the slap back delay isn’t really subtle IMO, I kept waiting for it by the end of the clip... I hear that more than reverb, but everything else is REALLY good! it’s still great, and as a fellow grandmeister user I went to mine and played Purple Rain, and then some Gary Moore after watching the next video... great videos keep em coming in 2021!
Its the tone they are looking for not the fx
Did H&K publish these settings somewhere? ANd for the "Still got the blues" tone?
Kfir is my favourite guitarist
This is my dream amp! It seems like it's an amazing piece of gear.
Looked everywhere but cannot find the settings that you spoke about. Could you please tell me where to find them
Where abouts on the site do you get all the tone settings?
What about "gold" by Prince, no one on the Internet has done a video on the solo tone on "gold", my ears are not that good, so I rely on RUclips and professionals finding it.
We'll ask Kfir if he can do a video on Gold too then :)
What were you guys using to record the actual audio?
Hi Frank, it was the GrandMeister Deluxe 40 micced with a Shure SM57 through our TM212 cab, into our four-track Tascam DR-70D recorder. Voices also into the Tascam, using one Lewitt boom mic. And it wasn't a standard boom mic, it was a drum overhead mic our producer loves to use ;) Hope that helps!

Give them a call and see if they can help you get hold of a GM40! They should be able to order one for you :)

Prince used a Mesa Boogie Hearetbreaker quite a lot.
Trying to discern that sound from phone speakers is in the realms of the ridiculous!
Ha, you mean for Kfir in the room, or for you guys watching the video? Either way, we agree ;) But Kfir nailed it anyway.
@@HughesandKettneramps ANYWHERE Rich! I know it seems he did, but ph speakers can never be full range! He MAY have gotten close to the sound over the phone yes. Doesn't mean it may be the same when heard over a proper hifi set up!
Cheers!
Yeah, you're right! Consider it noted for next time Kfir gets his phone out in an interview ;)
@@HughesandKettneramps Well done! ;o)
This is not a good analogy or comparison. First of all the track Purple Rain that appears on the album was recorded live. Secondly Prince used a Hohner Telecaster style guitar on the recording but it did not have a Telecaster pickup in the neck position that had a single coil in the neck and the bridge (passive not active), I have no idea what setting it was on. Third Prince was fond of the old School Boss pedal effects which I'm sure were used at that time. I know the boss Blues driver pedal was always part of his stompbox Arsenal. As far as what amp or speakers were used, I do not know. So what was actually used at that time is very far away from this comparison but this does sound fantastic . But I love Hughes and Kettner products, I actually own a bass amp which is fantastic and I own a single 10-inch speaker cabinet which I plug into a 12in guitar amp and the combination of the two sounds fantastic.
I thought the Hohner had active singles like the Cloud's neck? I know he used a Mesa Boogie MKii and MKiii in the 80s, so he likely used one of those for this. It does sound like there's a Boss Chorus or Flanger in there too.
9.08....mehr gain....??? Glaube er war noch im chorus.....trotzdem schöner ton !!!
Ha ha, yup ;)
