    I keep getting questions about how this tractor is holding up after having it for a year. I made a brief video summarizing my answer here ruclips.net/video/mYWJNf-iokg/видео.html

    Just got my E170 today and felt the same thing about the gas tank floating... disappointment that it was messed up. Glad to see it’s supposed to be that way. Thanks for saving me a few calls. Thanks for the video.

    Awesome Video…. lmao was going through same thing paused video halfway as was getting call back from Home Depot, where they told me John Deere assembles and doesn’t let them touch, and then your video explained why.

    Thanks much Bluelightbandit! I had that same sinking feeling when I noticed the excessive play in the tank on my new JD E160 lawn tractor, but your video has put me more at ease. Especially since you actually heard back from John Deere. I purchased mine at Home Depot. Would be nice for JD to include a section on the floating gas tank in the tractor manual, or at least the salesman be aware of the expected concerns and give the customer a heads up before purchase, especially if it's a new untested design. I'm sure with a full tank there will be less play, but it does still really feel like there's excessive play. If it is a new untested design will just have to wait and see. Hopefully any issues will be noticed before two years and 1 day or 121 hours whichever comes first. :-)

      Richard Nawyn Ahh YES! Mission accomplished! That was my entire motive for making this video, to put someone else's mind at ease that had the same concerns that I did. Thanks for your comment!
      Also, there's a guy that left a comment on this video that stated that the D series tractors were also like this fyi.

      Excellent comment!! What sold us was the thickness of the gauge of the metal and "V Twin 22 HP Engine, per my dad lol. We too are happy with the purchase. We thought the same exact thing about the gas tank and even went to the store upset to check and or return! Lol obviously we didn't. But this video from Bandit and your comment made us way more comfortable. So thanks!! 😁

    I bought the E180 about two months ago. While the kid at Lowes was trying to get the owner's manual off the fuel tank I thought he busted the tank. OK it floats and makes a gauge you cannot even see between your legs move up and down. For what we spend on this stuff, you think an electronic gauge is asking too much? Not sure I like all the pressure it takes on the throttle to hold it in choke either. Deck wash is not effective. Like other commenters I am not all that keen on the 30 second oil change system (expensive $$$). The good to show I am not a total complainer: Sharp turn radius. Thick heavy deck. Chews right through heavy or damp grass without slowing down a lick. Goes uphill as fast as it goes downhill with power to spare. Seems comfortable enough. As far as that reverse safety - put connectors on a single wire and jumped it. No problem. Overall: I think (so far) I am getting my money's worth.

    • @Bluelightbandit
      @Bluelightbandit  6 лет назад +4

      Great comment, thanks! I agree with you that they should install a decent fuel gauge, I mean how much more would it add to the cost? I can't imagine it being too much.
      I bypassed my reverse override switch and that was the best 5 minutes I have ever spent!
      Yeah, the tight turning radius is pretty awesome 😁

    • @krazyj1957
      @krazyj1957 5 лет назад

      The X series mowers you can get at dealers have electronic fuel gauge. I agree and I wouldn't think it would have cost that much more for the manufacturer to add it.

    • @MarkPalmer1000
      @MarkPalmer1000 5 лет назад

      Yes, the mechanical fuel gauge is something of a joker but in this price range I guess I can't fault it for the simplicity. I got rid of both the RIO and seat safety switches, they were pains in the neck but I understand they have to put them there for liability from those with no common sense. Turn radius is awesome as you mentioned, the machine is very comfortable, and the cut quality is excellent.

    FOLLOWUP: I was at Lowe's to pick up a double GFCI outlet for my new LG washer with sidekick, and for kicks on my way into the store I stopped at all the John Deere tractors for sale out front and tested the gas tanks on each one. There were six altogether - an E100, two E110's, an E120, E140 and E150 - ALL had the excessive play in the gas tank. So I think the entire E100 series have that tank technology. Still think JD should mention this somewhere in their owners manuals.

    • @Bluelightbandit
      @Bluelightbandit  6 лет назад +1

      Richard Nawyn Thanks for the follow up info! I talked with someone that has a D Series and they advised that theirs was the same way. You're right though, JD should mention this to it's customers.

    The reverse lockout is easy, since some people are stupid and lazy and don't look behind them they put a nanny switch on it. Look on the back side of the dash, the wires just plug in. To verify if yours is the same as my 5 yr old D130 unplug it and check the switch with a meter, on mine the switch is "normally open", meaning it does not conduct normally, but does conduct when you push it, if so, all you have to do is tie those two wires together, and you won't have to mess with it again. Be sure to check it with a meter to make sure it works that way before making any change. I did mine about 4 years ago and love it.

    • @Bluelightbandit
      @Bluelightbandit  6 лет назад +1

      G56AG That's great info, thanks! You're right, it is a damn shame that they have to put nanny switches on everything these days lol.

      @@Bluelightbandit I like the option on my mower. When you use the key switch to start it, it defaults to the backup lockout, however if you turn it one notch toward off, it defeats that safety junk.

    The low end mowers are the same at the dealer as at the big box stores. Was told that by the JD dealer. I bought from the dealer and the one I bought would run about 100 feet and stop. They came out and picked it up and brought it back a few days later, saying a safety switch was bad. Lowes would not have done that. However the low end JD mower is a piece of crap. The transmission in mine went out at about 300 hours. I have a steep hill in the back and it does not like to pull that after the transmission gets warm. Transmission would cost over half the mower cost to replace. I will never buy another JD just because they sell the low end junk and I thought I was buying a quality product.

    EZ oil change is a terrible and overpriced idea. The problem I have with it is your only draining out a small amount of "dirty" oil. What is it 8oz or something. Well that motor probably holds 2 quarts. 64oz. I would convert it back the the old way of a standard oil filter and be able to drain all the old oil out. This is a yuppie system

      Ya, now instead of draining all the dirty oil out and replacing the oil and filter for less than $15 which you can buy anywhere including Walmart, now you get to leave half the old dirty oil in the engine and pay $50 for new filter and oil that you can only buy from John Deere. THAT'S A GREAT NEW FEATURE!

    • @Bluelightbandit
      @Bluelightbandit  6 лет назад

      mrbubetube There's a drain plug so you can drain all of the oil out if you want to. From my understanding, this new feature was developed because JD R&D discovered that the majority of owners of these tractors NEVER changed the oil in the engine and they would wear out around 10 years. I've always been one to change the oil in mine every season. I think this will be a handy feature and it only cost me 25.00 because I got the extended warranty. Of course after so many hours of use, I will drain all of the oil out and start fresh again. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Mostly my back yard has a slight angle but I am more concerned about hauling from back to front yards . I know JD has a good product and I am hoping the transmission will hold up for years if it is built strong enough for the workload that I want to use it for .

Anything else I should know that you have found out since making this vid? Thank you in advance. This is an expensive buy for me so I am just doing a little research. I need nothing bigger than a 50 so it fits on my small trailer and I have been looking for awhile.

      Rodney Karnes I don't remember exactly how much the total was. I bought the extended warranty so I think the total was around 2,700. I bypassed the reverse safety button so I don't have to ever have to mess with it again. It was very simple to do, I wrote an article on how to do it, I will post the link at the end of my comment for you. My biggest complaint with the machine is that the fuel gauge is not accurate. I can have a full tank and the fuel gauge will show 3/4 full. It's not a huge deal but it is aggravating to be honest. I love how the engine starts without a seperate choke lever. This is the nicest lawn tractor that I have ever owned. I like it much more than the Husquvarna that I had. Also, thus model has the deluxe steering wheel on it which makes turning super easy. I hope this helps!

      It sounds like the transmission is not engaged. Are you sure that the selector on the back is in the right position? It's that push/pull silver rod in between the rear tires. It needs to be pushed all the way in. If it's pulled all the way out, it's not engaged and you can roll the machine easier. Hope this helps!
      You can see it for a split second at 03:45 at the bottom of the screen. It's in between the two white stickers on that black metal cover in between the tires.

    Its easy to fix the govt mandated mow in reverse issue, look at the back of the switch, unplug it and put a jumper between the two contacts on the end of the cable. Problem solved! Just make sure nobody is behind you, kids and dogs getting run over, seriously injured or killed is why they put that on there. My personal rule, NO KIDS OR DOGS allowed when mowing, kids must be inside when mowing, no exceptions!

    The fuel ⛽️ gauge is under the seat?? Not on the dash where you could see it and gauge your fuel consumption as your mowing? A loose fuel tank. Nope not for me. I want a fuel tank that’s secured to the tractor. Plus it’s under the seat. I had a Husqvarna 46in I wish it didn’t have starting problems because it was a good mower with good options but I had to get rid of it because it drained batteries and wouldnt start with out starting fluid.

    BANDIT,
    RE : JD 30 sec oil change.
    I don't understand how all the oil ends up in the filter. Upon engine start, there HAS
    to be oil in the crankcase for the oil pump to pickup.
    I bought the E140 because it DID NOT have the 30 sec oil change.
    My b&s engine requires 2 quarts. The 30 sec oil filter does NOT
    appear big enough to hold 2 quarts. Perhaps the 30 sec oil change only
    changes 1/2 the oil each time ?
    WHATEVER,
    I am NOT gonna pay $50 to replace 2 quarts of oil & a little filter. Not even $25.
    Otherwise, I think John Deere equipment is bitchin;
    !

    • @Bluelightbandit
      @Bluelightbandit  5 лет назад

      Hey man! The filter doesn't hold all of the oil. It just traps the dirty oil so it can't get out and when you replace it, the new filter replaces the old oil that was taken out by the previous filter. That's pretty much all I know about it.
      I can't say if it's a good design or not. I can see points from both sides of the spectrum so time will tell. The filters have come down in price since I made this video. I'm not exactly sure how much they are now because I haven't needed to buy one yet, I just know they are cheaper. Yeah, JD rocks! I hope you enjoy your new rider! Thanks for watching and commenting!

      & it did just fine. I bought the JD 40" tractor shovel & had
      to fab mounting brackets but I got it working & have been moving
      dirt & gravel with no ill effects. Not yet.
      I paid 2K for my E140. The X330 goes for 3K. The weak point in these
      tractors is the transaxles. You need to go all the way up to the X350 - $3.3K
      to get a transaxle upgrade. No I didn't buy the extended warranty.

    The way you check their story about the fuel tank is look at a X series John Deere mower. If the tank is "floating" on those machines, then you got the real story. If they are attached.....you know it's a cheaper shortcut. Simple.
