It's an option, you can have it off to the side or on the shoulder. It's not a requirement. I know this because I was a armed commander myself, and my instructors told me I could do it either way.
Julian Hibbs true, but just because your instructors says it’s ok doesn’t always mean it is..always check the regulation/manual and it will show was right is..regardless of them being Air Force, weapons are done in accordance with Army TC 3-21.5, on top of that, that’s an army officer Sabre
