1929 Ford Model A won't stop! How to adjust Ford Model A brakes in the field for a new owner.

- My friend Dave just bought this 1929 Ford Model A fordor sedan and discovered that it won't stop. We met up at a little garage Dave found with a few tools and a flaky floor jack in it where we could duck out of the rain and do something to make it stop better so he can make it home safely. This video shows how to adjust a Model A brake system on the fly under rushed conditions and with minimal tools.
Is it perfect? No way. It is better? Absolutely. Result: Dave made it home safely! If it works, is it really a "bad idea"??

The simplicity of the Model A, the wisdom of Mr Shinn, and the partnership with Mrs Shinn. In hockey that's called a "hat trick". Perfect demonstration of what you said, "this can be done on the side of the road". Thank you as always, God Bless, have a great week ~ Chuck
Thank you and may God bless you, Chuck!
Great tips and demonstration. This channel will really reduce your frustration level when your Model A baffles you. Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words. That's what I'm aiming for!
Nice instructions on a quick brake adjustment. It's always nice to get great tips from you, Thanks. Have a great weekend!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! My Phaeton is on jack stands and I'm about to do the same thing! Thanks for explaining the parking brake adjustment too!
Very agile Model A Guy!! I didn’t hear your knees or back crack. Great video
So far, so good. My native American DNA seems to be working its magic. My grandfather on mom's side made it 1 week shy of 100 years old, and played 18 holes just the week before, on foot- no cart!
Paul goes in & get's it squared away in a jiffy !!!!
Great to see another one of your ( very informative videos ) again , don't worry I was taking notes !!
KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDEOS ,
YOU ARE HELPING THE GUYS IN THE CLUB SEE THAT IT AIN'T ROCKET SCIENCE ,
JUST GOOD COMMON SENSE & READ THE MANUAL FOR TIPS AND WATCH PAULS VIDEOS TO STAY ON TOP OF YOUR CAR !!!!
YES!!!
Glad to see a new video. I have been worried about you being out in California with all the fairs and no new videos. Glad you’re OK.
I'm fine, but California is strange.
@@ModelA California? Strange? Surely you jest. 😂
@@mandolinman2006 If it wasn't for my elderly parents and my job, we would have left California and moved back to America already
@@ModelAthe sad part is that it is such a beautiful state.
I really enjoyed my time in California years ago. Beautiful state.
Glad you're back! I did this to my Coupe last summer. Great video 📹. Did mine just like the way you showed, well close anyway. I had to use a brake adjustment board. Tina was too far away, so I had to improvise.
That's the spirit, Jerry. Improvise, adapt, overcome!
That's our motto! Stay healthy and safe, my friend.
Hopefully some day I will be doing this. Very good to learn.
Nice job, Paul, an easy to follow process. Nice car, too! Can't wait to start shopping for my "A" this spring! - 73!
You're gonna love it!
Great to see another video!
Thank you Rick! I should call you Rockstar Rick!!
I hope you live 60 years more.
Thanks! Then I can be a thorn in more people's sides!!
great video Paul!
Thanks, man!
Great video as always you guys 👍 Missed y'all GLAD YOU'RE BACK!!😊
Thanks, we're back, and we're glad to be back!
Man, I would love to have you come and check out my 29 Fordor and 31 coupe for the day, I would even pay all expenses . lol. Thanks for all you do Paul.
Sounds like fun! If you don't care about being in a video, let's set it up. Yep, seriously.
When you're asking for #1, #2, #3, and #4 with the service brake, what are you referring to? Quarters of pedal travel?
I'm asking Tina to emulate the 1/2" steps on a brake adjuster took.
Thanks for the video!
Glad you liked it. I'm always lookin' for ways to help out other Model A owners!
It's crucial the the brake rods are adjusted to exactly the same length so that the angels pairwise are the same on the keys at the wheels. Not sure if that was what you said in the beginning?
Once that is in place, the brakeshoes fit the drums and all the area is in contact with the drum and given that there is no slup in any connections, it's just to adjust the adjusters at the wheels to the same light sound of the shoes gently touches the drums.
If the frame, cross shafts, axles, springs, backing plates, etc. are all perfect and straight, then you're right. But on a 96 year old car, that is no longer the case, and if you want it to stop on a dime, the brake rods are gonna end up different lengths. The web forums are wrong.
@ModelA , I think a problem is folks read the service manual, which was made for a Model A a couple of years old or newer. As you stated, a 96 year old vehicle and parts . too many things out of tolerance to follow the manual to the letter.
BTW, My father drove 2 1/2 ton Model AAs hauling oil field pipe. He said the A's would stop fine, you just had to start stopping sooner. Lol. They also drove 45mph.
But seriously, this is how i adjust the brakes on my 30 Fordor.
Thanks for another great video, Paul.
That is a beautiful car.
Time for another cup of coffee
I appreciate authenticity, but I want modern self adjusting hydrologic brakes on a car I put on the road. Henry Ford did adopt innovations as they became available.
That's cool. Some people (like me) prefer stuff that doesn't try to out-think us. Model A brakes are so simple and effective when adjusted properly.
Nice looking automobile
It's still needing a little work, but not bad for a newbie!
Seeing those wheels being out of round when you spun them by hand drove me crazy! Can you true up those wire wheels? Would make for a great video!
Yes you can! One of these days, I may show how.
Thx Paul! Your Sister is helped!
Excellent!
I had an accessory brake spring slip and go completely through my thumb, had to have a doctor extract it for me....... got me to the head of the line in the emergency care!
Wow; that is a workout! 😉
Yep. Model A work is what keeps me in shape.
Paul, while watching you spin the wheels, I noticed that one of the tires had a bit of run out. So, with this being said, do you feel it when driving?
Not really. It has to be pretty bad before you feel it
In the era of the Model A Doctors made house calls. It's refreshing today to see a Doctor make a housecall to cure an ailing patient......
Hi Paul, when you adjust brakes are you trying to achieve a 50% front, 50% rear bias? I've heard that Henry liked more bias in the front and other "experts" like more bias in the rear. I believe modern cars are about 60% front, 40% rear. Also, would you adjust the brake bias of a pickup the same way you would a fordor that is heavier in the rear?
You are right; common wisdom says the fronts are more important which is why when disc brakes first came out in cars they were on the front with shoes in the rear.
50/50. That's the way to go
Dr. Shinn, the one doctor that makes house visits.
Side of the road visits too
@@ModelAWasn't that 'roadside seminars'?
Yep!
Good job! I thought it was always sunny and 80 degrees in California?
Thanks! Southern California maybe. I live north and east and it does go below freezing now and then
Curious what your take is on the floaters. My experience with the cheaper ones was not positive. I know a few guys with the Flathead Ted’s that swear by them.
I swear AT them. FYI- From the factory, Model A rear brakes have "floaters" already. But they work.
May I ask where this is? This is not your normal shop
We just found a spot along our tour where we could duck in out of the rain. there was a really sketchy floor jack and jackstands there already
@ModelA good. Sounds like the Lord God provided
@ He most certainly does!!! Not only that, He fed us too.
@ModelA praise the Lord
oh boy i remember the first time i ever drove my model a, the back seat was full of junk the belt wood fell, and i had no breaks. today the back seats full of tools the wood belts still gone but it stops on a dime. its most likely about to become my daily as my actual daily driver has gone kaput. though im worried about the safety of it
I dailied a Model A for just over a year. Safety-shmafety... It was one of te best years of my life!!
Why competition is a good thing: Chryslers had hydraulic brakes in 1924.
But Ford's mechanical brakes work better
@@ModelA Hydraulic brakes for bicycles is overkill. For cars, not so much. There's a reason all makers went to hydraulics
@@DUCKSAREEVILLLLLLLL Yes, easier for them when the car is being made. But 95 years from now, will those hydraulic brakes still be working on the factory parts? Nope.
@@ModelA I agree 100%. Hydraulic brakes do not like to sit. That's true of most other newer car technology, also, especially when synthetics and plastic are involved- it doesn't age well. That pine tar seal for some old Ford waterpumps had to be a pain at times, though.
Don't you just drag your feet though the hole in the floor Mr Flintstone 😮
You can only do that once. Then you leave blood behind.
