So important! Lock snapping by burglars is easily done! Just replaced two of mine and it is really as easy as this! Just make sure you do a bit of reading on measuring locks! I believe the max recommendation for the lock cylinder to protrude is 5mm. You also want a lock with a 3 star Kitemark for maximum protection! Anti-bump, anti-snap, anti-pick etc
Nice! I need to replace all my interior door knobs. It's an almost 60 year old house. It was a rental for about 20 years to just one family and the previous owner did all the repairs with cheapest, rental grade parts. And now I have 8 different interior doors with 8 different types of door knobs, some brass, some brushed nickel. All different in style. Time to make it consistent. Thanks for posting. Your work is appreciated!
Thanks, Vikkie for showing this simple job. It always a mystery for many but, this video will give the confidence to attempt this job especially now we on lockdown looking for DIY jobs to do around the house.
Hi carpenter's daughter...another good job by yourself, and I should know, was in the double glazing game for 20 odd years man and boy, lol, both making and fitting...hope you're well, keep learning and smiling, remember, every days a school day,no matter how old we are...👍😉
Excellent video. I always suggest to people that they replace with thumb locks on the inside. In case of a fire, it'll be difficult to find your keys to unlock the door especially if there is thick smoke and you are panicking.
In the Netherlands a locksmith will charge around 80 Euros for replacing a cylinder. The thing is, many people *think* they are capable and having seen a simple instruction video, they start doing it. The problem is that most videos, like this one, don't mention some of the details that turn ut to be really important. I did not know that a cylinder should not stick out of the front more than a few mm, but my locksmith does. Whenever my safety is involved I tend to spend a few bucks and get a professional, no matter how confident I may feel that I can do it myself. Gas, electrics, locks, I'm allright tinkering with my car but for example I never touch the breaks or suspension etc, that's safety stuff, I leave that to the pro's. Dunning Kruger kills
Wrong size cylinder for that door. Now you made it very easy to be snapped. Try a 3 star euro profile cylinder next time, like: Yale Platinum, Avocet ABS... You have a responsibility to upload safe and secure content on RUclips, being a star that you are 😉, more people will fallow you're advice making there homes less secure. Big fan 😁
Good job, although the outside of the lock should be flush with the handle surround, only for security reasons as it is rather easy to break those locks off and gain entry if you happen to lose your key.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK Euro cylinders are measured in 5mm increments from the centre securing hole ie: 45/ 40mm, 50/ 35mm etc. Measure what is sticking our from your handle on the outside, if it is 5mm or more then you need the next size down, try to get as flush as possible to the handle. i am a locksmith and see this all the time, so easy to break in.
Nicely done, trying loosening the handle screws makes it easier. but it was a little sticking out each side, easy snapped this way. Keep it flush to handles next time and look at upgrading to anti snap something like Yale’s platinum.
And to find out which Euro Lock you need measure them between the center mechanism. They are sold in various lengths like 30/30, 40/40, 50/40 etc. Buy Ultion Locks to prevent Reptiles Snapping locks to gain entry and robbing your house, well worth the extra cost.
If you’re buying a new lock you need 3 numbers. Its the overall length of the barrel (mm), then the measurements each side of the rotating part. IE 120/60/50. Dont be tempted to fit a lock with the inner thamb screw rather than an interior key slot as it 'could' invalidate a burglary claim (or at least that’s what i was advised from my local locksmith), someone could break a window and still be able to open your front door to get back out.
The plumber I normally use rang me in a flap after having lost a customers key and he offered to replace the lock. He couldn't grasp how easy it was to just pop it out and slide a new one in until he eventually got it sussed. Definitely an easy one to over think
I have Upvc door and had a problem with the lock. Called out a locksmith and they said they couldn't do anything like change the lock because of the new locks have a bigger lock space?? yet my lockspace area looks the same size as the one you have, in fact it looks the same as yours in the video ???
Im afraid that lock looks like its sticking out too far from the handle making it easier to snap....you do need a professional who knows what locks are required
@@therealrobpreston1086 I am a locksmith I do this for a living I see wrong sized locks in doors all the time that are a easy target for the switched on burglar, if you fit the wrong size you also invalidate your house insurance, so you need to be careful

I would say 2mm absolute maximum sticking out.
Thank you
I need to get a new thumb turn for my patio doors. My exit plan in the event of a fire is worth more than security! How do I know which one to buy?

Love it. And if it doesn't work and you can't get out, well at least you'll be able to follow the government advice about staying home.! Nice one!

Really liked this video, clear and simple instructions, thanks.
Oh my good god. I thought you had to take the trim off the entire side. Thanks for this chick.
I think everyone assumes it's a difficult job. I always have, anyway :)
Ditto!

Omg would have bought a new door !!! 🤣🤣🤣 love this thanks so much xxxx
Thanks!! Saved me some £££ calling out a locksmith. 👌🏽
Glad I could help
I use the Yale high security ones. They’re a flat key with dimples in & very hard to ‘bump’ pick.
Standard Euro barrels are pathetically easy to pick.
Do burglars take the time to pick locks?
Excellent video. I always suggest to people that they replace with thumb locks on the inside. In case of a fire, it'll be difficult to find your keys to unlock the door especially if there is thick smoke and you are panicking.
Do not put a thumb turn on a door with a letterbox, easy to reach through and unlock it.
It's amazing how many capable people pay hundreds to a locksmith or joiner to do such a simple job.

And a couple more good euro locks are Avocet ATK and Era Fortress along with the Yale Platinum and Avocet Abs are all 3 star kitemarked cylinders
Nice work. There are different sizes based on the door and trim thickness. And you did the most important step, test it with the door open first 👍

Hi, do you have any DIY decking videos. I'm interested to see how you get on if you have attempted it?
Very easy! Any tips as to how I can make the handle less tight? It’s hard to open, it’s the lock more than the handle
Ooo nice!
Cheers :)

If the lock space is "smaller" just change the handles at the same time its only a couple of screws to undo
no , they are referring to the lock space inside door eg the space required for a lock. they claimed that I would need to buy a new door
i need to replce mine as i dont have the key - new house to me and the previous owners lost the key - can i do this without the keys
Can you done one on taking out the mechanism cleaning greasing it and refitting it please
I replaced mine, but now I don't have night latch so I can open the closet door without inserting the key even when it's open. How do I do this?
Have done loads of these however try it without having the key, yes there is a way 😊
Thanks! Sounds interesting 🙈
Looks alot easier than digging a 4000 gallon pond 😅
Good tip 🔑🔑🔑😉😉
