About the hybrids (Toyota) reliability in the long run, you are just plain wrong Scotty. They work normally better with less problems than even the non hybrids. If you really dig down in the details of how they work you will see it. It is actually less complicated and they use both worlds to make the drivetrain more robust. E.g. the system is now completly beltless. And the gearbox almost never breaks down (e-CVT is a different system than than an ordinary CVT).

I’ve been looking for a Tacoma and found a beautiful 2019 Limited with 17,000 miles. Test drive it and the engine was shaking and there was a small crack on the driver dash. The carfax showed NO accidents but two months before it was traded in the driveshaft was “serviced”. The salesman said that was because some of the Tacomas of that year had recalled driveshafts but this particular one wasn’t a part of the recall. I got out of there as fast as I could. Scotty has taught me so much common sense when it comes to car shopping. As a woman I really appreciate it!

If your getting a 2019 doing that, the previous owner was most likely abusing the crap out of it. You never know the whole situation. I have a 16 Camry hybrid that started with 64k miles and it runs like a dream. Never had a problem with it. I watch a lot of video’s from the “Car Care Nut Guy” who is a master diagnostic tech for Toyota and knows all the issues regarding certain Toyota vehicles according to years and types because he sees them all the time. Love Scotty’s channel but a lot less drama from AMD. Which I like much better. Hope you found the vehicle of your dreams and it works well for you. Peace

Ohhh Those old GM Hybrid SUVs were strifed with problems. Luckily Ford and Toyota Hybrids have proven to be extremely reliable. The few HV battery failures of Ford and Toyota Hybrids are usually found on older, low mileage cars. Hybrids need regular driving cycles to keep the battery properly maintained. Both Ford and Toyota Hybrids are generally capable of 300K plus miles. I'd be weary of a Hybrid regardless of manufacturer past 15 years old. Unless, of course, one is capable of rebuilding or replacing the HV battery pack themselves.

The motor-generators on Toyota Hybrids almost NEVER goes bad. Maybe a regular alternator will because it has brushes and an electronic regulator and that is was usually goes bad. But the Synergy generators are just a brushless three phase wire coils and the electronics are in the inverter. The windings never go bad. It's nothing like a regular generator, which has a limited life span.

IDK about other brands but, if your battery goes bad on a Prius, they drive terribly, they are sluggish and do not feel safe to drive. as for replacing the traction batteries, there are companies out there that are making new battery packs for hybrids that use newer battery technology that last longer and are much more efficient, equating to even better MPG for less than half of what the Dealer sells the OEM replacement batteries for.

@@viktorkatona7521 The argument only makes sense if you want a proven, much cheaper (less than the cost of a hybrid battery replacement) Toyota vehicle whose model is in the million mile club or if you want to spend $38,851 on a 2021 highlander hybrid and pray it makes it 1 million miles because "it's 4th gen". By the way, 4th gen 2020 had 46 service bulletins and 1 recall and 3rd gen 2019 had only 44 and 0. The whole "it's newer so it's better" argument is a common trap so don't feel bad.
Another option, you can buy a used highlander hybrid with 200k miles and pray it makes it to a million without a battery change (which to my knowledge none have done yet) and pay a little less. Both ways (buying a hybrid new or used) are not smart in my and scotty's opinion if you want to get huge mileage out of it before selling/trading in. For example, you can buy high mileage lexus rx250s and toyota sequoias, 4runners, tundras, tacomas for less than $7500 and depending on the year/package are in the million mile club with typical maintenance. Why settle for a hybrid that won't make it (as far as we know at this point)? Are you saying that 4th gen will be the first to make it to a million miles without a battery change or huge major repair? I'll always bet on gas engine Toyotas with an already proven track record of longevity. If electric highlander hits the 1 million mile club on the original battery I'll consider it but so far that is a pipe dream.
At this point the only electric I'd get is prius because at least you'd make your money back for the expensive repairs. Though my whole family can't fit in it so either Toyota's SUVs needs to hit 50 or 60+mpg or their original battery needs to last 30-40 years before replacement. At that point I'll retire my ICE suv though that will probably last another 700k miles for me so it's going to be awhile (unless gas hits $6/gallon).
