If I had to guess John Oliver may have been responding more to the tone of the question, but idk. But I agree his statement was actually kind of enlightened
10:50 It's really frightening that every time republicans discuss gender/sexual minorities they make it about how they would sexually harass or assault women openly if they were able to be protected by the law
Sara Grace women can assault women. Men can assault men. I think that the only way to solve this problem is to knock down all public loos. Replace hem with porta potties
That's because it's a easy way to sexually assault somebody. Look we're trying to minimise the amount of sexual assaults and you fuckers are here leaving the fucking door open.
The confusion for me isnt what happens (regularly) in the the bathrooms. It's the issues brought up over why we have segregated bathrooms in the first place that get confusing. I guess if no bathroom laws, those signs have no weight. Just suggestions I guess.
i’m a trans guy, and watching this cis male (john oliver) defend, protect and understand us is so empowering. i’m tearing up writing this, it’s genuinely so refreshing and gives me some hope
Charming Person Emotions DONT define gender. That’s the furthest from it. Men can be emotional and Women don’t have to be very emotional. Not all Trans Women are aggressive, in fact little of them are, and same can go for Trans Men.
Charming Person i honestly do not care if you view me as a woman because i know what i am. it’s sad that you feel such hate and are so ignorant to something so harmless and has extensive scientific research backing it up. i also have a question for you! if you’re so transphobic when why are you watching this video? sounds a bit counter productive to me :)
yeah. It kind of shows how you need to be indoctrinated INTO being transphobic, not the other way round. People default to being accepting generally because it is literally no water off of a cis persons back that trans people exist.
@@bajablast2271 almost like there is was an obvious opportunity multiple people took because it was so obvious and if you're that insecure to scan through comments just to make snide remarks maybe that reflects something about you
You can't blame other people for his suicide. This kind of propaganda has to end. I've been close to a lot of transgender people in my life, and work with transgender kids, and the mental illness they face is not because of a lack of acceptance but because they're on this track to supposedly get some whole new identity and body which never arrives. Transitioning is basically a lie there is no way to medically give someone a different body. Period. Supporting people with genders for you needs to be re-examined so that they aren't sold this golden end result which never arrives.
I'm angered that Henry is no longer with us. I was watching another video that mentioned the death of a transman named Henry, and as soon as I saw that person's face, I recognized him. And I came back here to confirm it, and my heart sank. I am so angry that this country has embraced so easily a movement to harm some of its most vulnerable citizens. I am angry that Henry had been fighting for so long to get his rights and Identity protected. I am angry that there are so few options for trans people in red states, that the ghouls in charge are causing all this. But most of all, I am angry that a young man with so much potential is gone because of all this.
"When I was in Vietnam I got a medal for killing two men And a discharge for loving one." Epitaph of Leonard Matlovich. Made about as much sense as the military trans ban now.
A trans girl at my school was physically attacked by other students. She was given a week’s suspension alongside her attackers and she spoke about the incident so nonchalantly, as if it were a normal thing, as if it’s happened to everyone at some point. It’s heartbreaking.
@Tsar Nicholas II No, actually, they either suspend the attacked person to cause less drama in school for a bit or they do it because they want them to be safe at home, mentally resting. There's an underlying reason as to why they are suspended and it is usually because they want to make safe choices and most of the times it is to suspend everyone regardless to shut up both sides and all the discussions related to them.
@Bo Jangles It’s really not. In fact, it’s not much of a comeback. If you asked a male that, they would probably just look at you weird and say yes or no. Edit: Sorry, it appears I have r/wooshed myself.
Actually, possibly unpopular opinion, I don't think that weatherman faux paux was that bad. His mentality behind the question was exactly what transgender people are striving for, "...why don't we just call her a woman?" I don't know the rest of the convo (if there was more) but he wasn't asking to try and put her down, he was asking because in his mind it didn't make sense to single her out as being transgender, if she's a woman call her a woman. I actually have to respect that. Granted, shouldn't have been a conversation during a news broadcast, but still the thought was there.
well he even said like even when the responses are positive they can read wrongly but i agree i think he was just confused like wait but if you have transitioned and your not in transit now wouldn't that just ..... make you a woman ? like why do you even need to have the trans label is what i think he was confused about
@Pez i m sorry but if your a grown adult and you have to ask a stranger online what a woman is then we have bigger issues lol and maybe you need to go back to first grade
I don’t really get that. Did they think that Henry was actually a cis boy trying to get into the girls bathroom? Why give him a pep talk just to force him to use the girls?
This is so heartbreaking and inexcusable. Some people are so afraid of things they don't understand and don't want to understand. Instead they'd rather just pass their own ignorance and fear to the Children in their lives 😡
I don’t even know if he realizes how much this meant to the trans community, especially at the time this was aired. Even now it still holds up, he a cis man did an entire segment on why we, some one he didn’t need to care about deserved to be respected. And he articulated things in a manner that were respectful and understanding of the issues we face while still being witty and funny as always. And he was able to create one of the best quotes for the trans community that I still personally love today. He did an amazing job all around.
yea... legit though, when I'm presenting full fem (usually go gender neutral fem dailyish) and use a mens restroom, I've gotten to experience a bit of chivalry lol people seeing me, holding doors open, few word small talk dialogue, someone seeing me and coming out of the stall they just went into to give it to me. I've also experienced some negative things, thank fucking "god" that I haven't experienced anything violent yet...but suprisingly, alot of people are pretty neutral about it, or if they aren't they don't usually cause trouble. I pity the fool who tries to attack me though...Im a chick who knows how to use a gun and a knife and have violence related trauma...so ya know... that helps with reaction times and all that.
I have been in the bathroom with a trans woman. Do you want to know what she did? Well i dont know because she was in her own stall and i was minding my own damn business! She did wash her hand by the way.
Weird how people will never ask other cis people about their genitals unless they are in a relationship, but the second they talk to us trans people they just HAVE to know.
Testicle or testis (plural testes) is the male reproductive gland or gonad in all animals, including humans. It is homologous to the female ovary. Gender is the human mating dance and those who are not reproducing the next generation have no right to interfere with the future we are building for our children.
I would not care about your genitals. Unless I was going to date you. Which I won’t if you are a trans man. I wish you the best, respect, love and happiness.
You'd think it'd be common courtesy not to inquire about someone's junk during your first sit-down with them. Especially with an audience. I don't even ask about my close friends' genitals (unless we're just goofing around and even then, that's only if it's appropriate for their sense of humor).
Great vid, except for what Oliver did not address, which is women's hard-fought right to protection from male violence. We exclude ALL men from female spaces. When we exclude "trans women" (men) from female spaces its not because they are trans, it is because they are male.
That's because trans people constantly crap on about their sexuality or gender, no wonder people ask personal questions of people that announce their sexuality and gender to the world as though it was their defining quality. The rest of us are more than our gender or sexuality, we are people with varied interests, jobs, beliefs, hobbies and relationships, the trans community are just shallow people who define themselves by their sexual proclivities or gender dysphoria.
My best friend was depressed for so long. He kept going in and out of hospitals for depression and being bi polar. And I would try so hard to understand. I was depressed too. But something was different with him. It turns how he was trans. He was a man living in a woman's body. And ever since he has started living as a man he has gotten straight As, is going to law school, and no longer has any emotional issues. So that is the difference that people seem to not understand.
I'm glad transgender surgery worked for her, but sadly that hardly ever is the case, since both the depression and the suicide rate for transgenders is exactly the same before and after surgery.
Only issue it's caused me is that for some reason places use this as an excuse to only have one bathroom! Like seriously no, just still have 2 bathrooms but make them both gender neutral how hard is that
@2manynegativewaves you can check out their crimes on transcrimeuk.com there are quite a few bathroom assaults actually (one near me involved a transwoman trying to get a 10 year old girl to take her pants off in a supermarket toilet, luckily the girl managed to fight him off). It is causing issues for women and girls, many girls are now staying away from school because they don't want to use mixed sex toilets whilst on their period and that's just not fair.
@@nelliewright5832 Did you think I would not click the link? It was some trashy UK tabloid, and the headline was "inmate guilty of two rapes changes genders between trials." That is not remotly related to anything you said, so I call BS. Posting multiple copies of the same headline does not make it any truer, either.
I'm a trans man, and I can't even imagine coming out at my school. I would probably be so bullied, not only by students, but also by teachers. I'm also fairly popular, so it would be horrible for my social life. I wish for more people like him in the world, so that trans people can finally feel free and themselves in the environments that they daily inhibit.
It's creeps and perverts pretending to be trans that are making it harder for you. Morons are seeing and hearing about the actions of these creatures, and taking it out on all of you unfairly. Only 0.003% of all humans have gender dysphoria. 5% of young people identify as trans. Entire classrooms are coming out as trans. Something has gone badly wrong.
Trans woman here. Full time transgender since a year and it took me around 30 years to come out. I'm happy I haven't come out when I was in school, that would have been a disaster, but now on my 30s I feel it was a bit too late. Try balance out when it's neither too early nor too late :) -Cass
I'm sorry you have to go through that... That can push into isolation, please know that you're not alone ! Take care of yourself, you deserve it. A lot of us have been through the same thing or similar ones. We understand, you're not alone !
Chin up, remember that they don't get to choose you. You are what you already are. they only wish they could change that but they know they never will be able to. If you do what they want you'll never be happy. I feel sad for those without inner peace that strike others with hate.
Take it from me, people in high school will always be mean no matter who you are. Once you graduate, you are free to pick your own friends and you never have to deal with a bully’s intolerance ever again. You can just ignore them and walk away with your true friends that love you for you :)
@@xxXthekevXxx Well if you are going to go that route I'd say drop out of highschool and get a GED instead (it'll take a couple months but that's better than 3+ years right) then get a Job
My cousin is trans, those statistics really do scare me. I love him to death and have looked up to him since I was little, and I can't even think about him getting hurt or hurting himself.
FWIW, based on my anecdotal experience as a trans person and on statistics on the matter, acceptance from family makes someone a lot less likely to have those negative experiences. Your support of your cousin is probably doing a lot to help him.
If you and your family accept him, then he'll do well. The main reason for those statistics is because of a lack of acceptance from wider society and the people around them.
I had never heard of John Oliver, so when I saw that someone was discussing transgender issues (7 years ago), I was expecting the worst. I found instead a great ally and I'm happy now!
Ronnie Januszki That erases the excuses of alt right dickwads of “mental gymnastics” or whatever. The first time this guy ever heard of the concept, and he acknowledges that trans women are women.
That deer in the headlights look on his face while he's trying to figure it out... but yeah, he does seem to arrive at the best possible conclusion in the end. A transgender woman is a woman. She would never go through all the very considerable tribulations of transitioning physically if she had not *always,* on the most fundamental level (personal and emotional) been a woman.^^
The problem is that, honestly, "transgender woman" could mean two things. To me, that could mean "a man that became a transgender woman", or "a woman that became a transgender man". The wording is slightly confusing.
Things that are okay: Accidentally dead naming someone, then apologizing and correcting yourself. Accidentally using the wrong pronouns, then apologizing and correcting yourself. Taking a while to get used to a friend or family member's new name and gender. Things that are not okay: Purposefully and/or repeatedly dead naming someone or referring to someone's previous gender without apologizing or correcting yourself. Cutting someone off because "they're turning away their true selves" or for any other reason connected to their new identity. Refusing to accept someone's new name and preferred pronoun(s).
It's also not ok to make a big deal when you dead name someone. For example: "Hey [deadname] how- oh my god I am soooo sorry it's just taking me a long time to get used to I'm so sorry I'll never do it again!!!" Just say: "Hey [deadname] how- sorry, [correct name] how was your weekend?" It makes us feel like we're burdening you by asking you to use our correct name and pronouns.
There's a line though. I can only listen to my parents deadname me so many times a day. Especially when they shout it across a room or a building, and then after I correct them or glare long enough they mumble the correct name under their breath. I am tired of it. Far too tired.
@@vik.2560 "Correct" what are dem chromosomes buddy? Its not a matter of correct, its a matter of not using the name and pronouns you tell others to use.

13:33 just heard that Henry Brousseau featured on the show way back when took his own life over the weekend. So so sad. My deepest condolences. This episode and his follow up 7 years later are more relevant than ever.
As a trans guy, I can confirm that I’ve gotten a ton more weird looks when I was still in the closet but already looking masc using the women’s bathroom than when I came out and started using the men’s bathroom. In fact, I haven’t gotten a single weird look in the men’s room ever, opposed to when women would give me weird glares and whisper about how there’s a little boy in their bathroom. I’m pretty confident in saying that I make more people uncomfortable by going into the bathroom assigned to my biological sex opposed to the one assigned to what I actually look like and identify as.
I've never understood getting upset about who uses the bathroom. I had a transitioning peer in school, Mac now MacKenzie, used the women's bathroom. Never once had an issue. 1. Because it's not my fucking business, and 2. It's not my fucking business. The only problem I had was that she was infinitely better at makeup than I. Bitch looked absolutely stellar at prom.
Feel that, I am female, I idetify as such. But I also find I don't give a shit if someone calls me male. My friend tells me that I might just be Gender Fluid, and possibly They Them pronouns would fit me. Though, I find I don't care if I am called male or female. Due to my short hair and flat chest with my love of boy jeans because damn well they are comfortable. (Like seriously, why do women jeans have to hug the area that heats up easy?) I get mistaken for a male alot, but I laugh it off because I know if you don't look at me in front and up close I look like a guy. But someone mistaking my gender is the least of my worries in life between school, finding work, getting a car, and among other things. I don't have time to worry about it, and I don't get upset by it. I guess that also because my name gives way for many nicknames, so I got used to this fact. At a young age I never understood why calling someone a different gender was seen as an insult, at least in the sense of little kids teasing or name calling. I was called mockingly a male once or twice, and just gave a confused look at the kid as if to as if that was the best they could do. (I also get called 14 when I am actually in my 20's, due to have a younger looking face and being short lol)
The guy who was confused about trans women and was like "A woman who used to be a man? Isn't that just a woman? I'm so confused." Is an accidental ally and I'm here for it.
Watching this in 2022 is still so depressing, especially while seeing things like the Texas Governor asking courts to investigate transgender healthcare in adolescents for child abuse. The german law governing transgender issues is widely critizized here, becous it contains quite a bit of medical gatekeeping and sometimes dehumanizing examinations, but at least once you've gone through with the process mandated by the law you're done with it and you get EVERYTHING matching your gender identitiy, passport, birth certificate, driver's license... I feel very lucky to live here and to be past that point.
Diego Brando 「ТӤЄ шӨЯLD」 Nobody was saying it *was* a biological change, and fyi people who get sex-change surgery know they've just sterilized themselves. They just wanna make their bodies look the way they think they should. It's not much different from piercing your ears or getting a tattoo. People who are perfectly ok with their natural bodies also sterilize themselves with vasectomies/hysterectomies, and I've seen some fat dudes with far bigger tits than mine. As for suicides? Lots of natural-bodied people off themselves for a million different reasons. As for kids? Yeah, maybe some of them get hormone replacements, but that's the parent's call. Kind of like if they needed a liver transplant or chemotherapy. It's not your kid, and it's not illegal. So really, why do you care? It really has nothing to do with you. Don't worry so much about it, none of it is about you o directly affects your life in any conceivable way. I'm not into dating or fucking a trans person, so I don't. But I also really don't give a damn how they choose to live their lives, either. I think I get where you're coming from, but you need to chill, man. You're clutching those pearls far too tight.
@Diego Brando 「ТӤЄ шӨЯLD」 It's biologically impossible to change sexes. Gender isn't even biological. You did, albeit incidentally, make a good point. It perhaps IS impossible to change genders, but it IS definitely possible to come to the realization that your sex organs don't match your gender. You can then opt to surgically alter your genitals to match the genitals of the genitals of the sex that best matches your gender if you wish. As I said, this doesn't change your sex, or really change your gender either, however it seems to provide some transgender people with a more acceptable sense of identity. I honestly don't see why people like yourself would choose to make petty criticisms that are almost always inaccurate to a degree just to make others feel bad about a personal decision. You need to reflect a bit.
This comments section is really depressing. People wonder why trans people kill themselves. Read what you're writing before you send it, and imagine that being sent to you, and everywhere you go people saying the same things, all the time every day. Imagine that following you and never going away. School, work, family, people who you thought were friends, the public, and people online. By the thousands. It's constant, and you're all contributing to it.
***** I really don't know who you are talking to, but I didn't say ANYTHING about LGBT I was talking about the comments. I didn't say ANYTHING about oppression (because people have no freaking idea what that word means). I didn't say ANYTHING about raising awareness. I have seen the kind of bile and nastiness which this comments section broadcasts (What I was actually talking about thank you very much) EVERYWHERE. Facebook, news websites, all over youtube, real life, everywhere. And if you're denying that it exists, you're definitely helping! Thanks! Also you don't understand how percentages work do you? Because even if a community has less of a percentage of existence than the "main community" (such as trans and non trans people) there is still an ABSOLUTE possibility that there are more trans people (percentage wise) who commit suicide than there are non trans people. And did the news story in the video not count as "something not written by a *blah blah blah apparently people don't need to cite their papers anymore*? If not, here's this website (which covers ALL suicide): www.suicidology.org/resources/facts-statistics. And if you're still having trouble with reading comprehension here's the link to the actual PDF from the website: suicidology.org/Portals/14/docs/Resources/FactSheets/2011/LGBT2014.pdf. Here's a website which talks about transgender people specifically (With virtually the same graphs as the news article what a surprise!!!) www.vocativ.com/culture/lgbt/transgender-suicide/ But no, what I was talking about (which you really didn't seem to understand, did you?) was the tendency of people to just press enter without reading what they've written and thinking about how it may affect other people. Full grown adults may be able to handle seeing stuff like that, and eventually they just tune it out anyways, but children, and teenagers (the group in all statistics which is most vulnerable REGARDLESS of whether they're LGBT or not) can't. And if you're really going to fault children for being unable to handle the vile nastiness that these people who have no regard for or capacity to understand another person's life spew out positively everywhere, then I don't really want to hold much more of a conversation with you. Also you've just used the word 'retarded', so actually, I don't want to have any more of a conversation with you. I hope you were able to understand what I wrote, if not I really couldn't care less.
HugzByDeath I absolutely agree. I think if people would just realise that they're talking to actual people maybe they'd stop being total asshats. Or at least more would stop being total asshats. I'm well aware that this world is simply filled with nasty people who are looking for an excuse to be nasty and that the internet is that excuse.
Ashley Lewis Ahh it wasn't worth it anyway, SJWs tend to not want to change their opinions regardless of what people say anyway. Have fun, honestly all I wanted you to do was lighten up a little, life has a lot less weight if you do so.
Tamahina Pierrot I can’t tell if you’re saying I deserve the comments sorted by new or the comments sorted by top. Because either you’re being really sweet or being an asshat
I'm a Transman. And, yes, Folk do seem to have a certain fascination when it comes to a Trans Person's junk. Even when they're not asking you, you can tell that every fibre in their body wants to. The 'have you had THE surgery' or 'are you having THE surgery' are common ones. And, bathrooms are always an issue. It's one of my biggest sources of anxiety. I use the Gents, but regardless of how Male I look, I'm still not super confident using them. I much prefer to use a Gender Neutral / Disabled Loo. Far less stressful. Transitioning is not for the faint of heart. It's a lifelong process and it can be a bumpy ride, so the idea that a person would fake being Trans to abuse Women or Children in the Ladies loo, is just so preposterous that it makes my eyes bleed!!!!. I mean, seriously, Sex Offenders do not have to identify as a Woman to Sexually abuse Women and Children. They can do that just fine as they are! It's damaging, hateful and so disrespectful to even suggest it, let alone to pass laws based on that belief. Now I'm getting side tracked, lol! I came here via a link that was posted on a Trans Support Group that I belong to, because I said I didn't know who John Oliver was. Now I do and I couldn't love him more for this video. Anyone who has a negative opinion of a Trans Person, should be encouraged to watch this. Maybe then they'd come to think differently.
Its the trans people that have the fascination and constantly talking about their junk not the other way around! Take a look at all those groomer teachers talking about their sex life to pre-pubescent children! its sickening.
@@1BuFo Ahhhh, I didn't realise you were Transgender, and so had a personal, lived experience of what it's like to be Trans, and the recipient of the said fascination regards one's 'junk' .

I'm a woman and never in my life have I felt uncomfortable meeting a transwoman in the girl's bathroom. Children don't even take notice of things like this and molesting someone in a restroom is a crime and entirely the fault of the criminal and not to be used against transpeople.
Shushu Chan Tbh, as a trans girl I only even go in public bathrooms if I'm basically about to have my bladder explode anyway.. I can't imagine easily getting over that anxiety if you're nowhere near passing tbh.
Oatmeal I understand why this is a cause of anxiety for any transperson and I'm sorry that you have to go through this, just want to let you know you're welcome in the women's restrooms ♡
Oatmeal I have been in the ladies room and seen trans women who are not exactly passing but are trying their best. No one batted an eye. I do live somewhere that is known for being very accepting of everyone though. Hope you get over your anxiety soon.
@@laviniafitzgerald5136 you could have seen e.g. ciswomen with a bad case of PCOS, and not transwomen. Without talking to them there's no good way of knowing if their obvious anxiety and discomfort is because they're terrified of being bullied for their transness, or if because they're terrified of that someone will mock them for "being such a disgusting excuse for a woman" that they even have a more masculine bone structure and male pattern body hair distribution because of their fucked up hormones. There are even butch ciswomen who don't have hormone disorders but dress androgynous, have an androgynous face, and carry themself in a butch manner so they just aren't obviously female, despite being very cisgendered. Point is, you think you saw transgender women, but you have no way of knowing if you actually did instead of e.g. a ciswoman with bad PCOS.
Years ago I was in Japan and they had some very reasonable public restrooms... it was simply the restroom (non-gendered, multi use). There was a wall of urinals and a wall of stalls - use whatever worked for you. There was no problem. Some of the other Americans I was with got freaked out while we were peeing, there were women walking to the stalls. As an American I think many Americans have some weird hangups about people's plumbing. Looking at the arrests, I think we are all safer sharing a bathroom with a trans person than a GOP congressman! 😀🍹🇵🇭

the idea that people look at each others junk in the bathroom is fucked up. i dont even make eye contact with anyone while i wash my hands at the sink.
+heyysimone I know right. I don't mean to insult men, but I actually think that's all they do that in restroom is look at each other dicks. Then, some of them assume women do the same thing, even though we have no urinals or open space toilets, at least not in the States.
+pluto545 Uhhhh, I have used men's restrooms all my life and have never seen another man's junk. This is one of the main reasons why I believe transpeople should be able to use the restrooms that correspond to their gender presentation. Regardless of which restroom you use, you pretty much have to go out of your way to see some genitals.
+pluto545 LOL if you ever look at a male bathroom with those community urinals or simply don't have dividers, you'll see a lot more men waiting at a wall uncomfortably staring at the ceiling or shoving their junk so deep into the urinal that they risk getting pee all over their pants. I mean, there are men out there vastly more comfortable than most but my own experiences, people hate the guy that takes the urinal (even if its covered) 1 away from the wall which means someone is gonna have to get close to a stranger. xD But I've personally yet to see anyone go on their tippy toes to see someone's junk over the urinal cover and if that were to happen, its not the end of the world. Probably wont go to that same bathroom ever again, but its not the end.
It brings me no joy to learn that Henry, the boy who was advocating for his own rights in front of legislators in this video, died by suicide on December 21st. These are the consequences of transphobia.
Nope mental illness. I'm black and I've been discriminated against. Do you think I'm going to off myself? Fuck no. He wanted to die because he was insane. I have zero respect or care for any individual that take their own life.
I really don't understand what everybody's problem is with bathrooms. "Oh no! Think of the children!" When there's a mother with a little son and the son has to pee, she will go into the women's bathroom with him. Same situation, but it's a dad with a daughter and they will use the men's bathroom. Does this traumatize the child? No, it doesn't. You wanna know why? Because in a bathroom people are minding their fucking business.
exactly! it's not like you're waving your genitals around in the bathroom publicly.. the only difference is urinals (and not even that's in every men's bathroom)
@Tsar Nicholas II because they use the bathrooms that correspond with their gender, not their 'birth gender' which you would actually refer to as 'biological'. They use the bathroom of their gender, the one which they identify with. Because that's what they are. Period.
I'd say a TERF pulling the pants of a 9-year-old Trans girl in a public bathroom is exponentially more likely to traumatise a kid than any of what you've just described. (This was a true story, for anyone that didn't heard about it)
as a member of the military I personally don't care if someone is gay trans bi or all the above somehow. as long as they can watch my back when we go overseas were good. what you have between your legs or decide to put there in your free time is none of my business
rd0676 My dad agrees and the only reason he is alive today is because of a trans man. Just think about transphobic's. The only reason a military solider is alive today is because of another military trans soldier.
+MidnightmoonRR I have to disagree partially. I think it should be allright to ask those questions if they are talked about in preparation of a show and if they are on topic. We have refused to talk about LGBT people in the media that I can understand the public being curious now that we open up to talking about it. Just prep on them.
+Freddy Meyer While I understand where you're coming from, talking about what is below someone's clothing can be VERY uncomfortable. Even if prepped, I don't think many people would want to talk about this reassignment. Speaking from experience, those questions are weird and unpleasant.
My favourite thing about the bathroom bills is that if a guy wanted to go in and sexually assault a woman in the women's bathroom that's possible. Like, regardless of the bill. BATHROOMS AREN'T LOCKED
That's kind of the problem I have with this segment it just comes across as preachy. He's basically asking for progress without people who have questions, no matter how private in nature, just want to understand how it all works. This kind of thing only recently became a big public issue, and most have never knowingly interacted with a transgender individual. So yeah there are going to be questions. You might as well go and take a top of the line PC to Victorian England with some sort of magic wifi connection to our present, and tell them with this box the sex deprived individuals could get porn. Then proceed to get mad at them when they don't understand how use a plug and they ask you how to. It's something understandable if you are a private individual, but if you are a public individual like the women at the beginning who are trans, there are going to be questions and the sooner they are answered the sooner we can all go back to not giving a fuck about what someone does in their personal life. Which I wish the world would let me do. It can never just be simple as accept and understand and move on. No we have to spend the next few decades listening to the bitching and moan of two self-righteous groups of asshole. Also on a side note, Oliver's definition of trans is wrong, that is gender identity in which all of us fall on a spectrum. Trans is someone who suffers from gender identification disorder in which they can't accept their gender identity being so far away from their sex they think that they are freaks. Because of this they feel the need to have gender reassignment surgery in order to accept themselves.
thelinedrive Another comment about: *He's basically asking for progress without people who have questions, no matter how private in nature, just want to understand how it all works.* It's called the internet - google and educate yourself, why encroach someones privacy when the tools and info are already out there? Plus your analogy about taking a computer back to the past is dog shit.
thelinedrive He's doing us the favor of answering the most common and uncomfortable questions that transppl face on a daily basis from otherwise well-meaning people. Look. We know most of you aren't trying to offend or be rude. We understand that until recently a lot of people had no idea what a transgender person was or why it mattered that you give a shit. We know all of this. But, it's all of the time. It never ends. All Oliver is doing is giving you the rundown and saying what most transgender people wish someone like him would say so we can stop dealing with this. Part of being transgender means you usually have to also become an expert in gender identity and exhibit supernatural levels of patience for this constant barrage of incredibly personal and inappropriate questions. And like I said, that's from people who aren't even trying to be assholes. Combine that with everyone else who are either asswipes to us, outright violent towards us, with only a very few who are cool and just treat us how we present and maybe you can begin to see why so many transppl just can't deal with it anymore and commit suicide. Nobody chooses this life and when a transperson says "I've always felt this way inside" they aren't just making that up. There really is such a thing as Gender Identity and all of the peer-reviewed research is heavily suggestive of it being the result of a non-plastic structure in the brain that forms in fetal development in response to whatever hormones are present. Conversely, there is a ton of evidence that rules out gender identity as "learned," socially constructed, or otherwise programmable. The John-Jane-John case was what finally caused the medical community to come around and put serious effort into figuring this out so there has been some pretty compelling research done in the past 15-20 years. Like I said before, I've had to become an expert on gender because I field a never ending line of the same questions, so I've had to actually look at the science. Unfortunately, the implications of this research haven't really diffused into the mainstream culture yet and we still have this "you get assigned a team at birth and that's it" attitude with gender. Doctors have stopped assigning gender to intersex babies as a direct result of John-Jane-John. But, it's up to the parents mostly with transgender babies and while things are a lot better off for transkids now with all the new awareness and focus on dealing with it early-on, there are still a ton that don't know/care/reject the whole idea that a kid could be transgender. Which means a lot of transppl don't have the luxury of transitioning before puberty and just living their lives with minimal turbulence. Different people have different bodies, and sadly it is your outward appearance that most people will judge you on when trying to place your gender. Behavior/speech/mannerisms are all part of it and sometimes more than compensate, but hey I'll be real and say some transbrother/sisters got a shit hand genetically and/or transitioned later on and didn't get the most ideal results. Personally, I lucked out here and now you'd never know IRL unless I told you. Which is good and bad. It's good because I'm free from a lot of the day to day looks, questions, reactions, etc. It's bad because the number one killers of transwomen is trans-rage from straight men. I don't even like dudes and I have been with my GF for almost a decade, so it's not like I'm even going out on dates with men or anything. Just walking to the train stop on a friday/saturday night and being cat-called by drunk dudes has led to life-threatening situations when they realize I'm trans. Look, I hate all these labels and definitions for transppl. I generally agree with that Weather-guy "Isn't that just a woman?" Because that's what I am. (the same can be said for Transmen. Isn't that just a man?) But, we also have a unique set of challenges that non-trans people do not. It's one thing if you are trying to add to that and just a piece of shit. If so none of this matters to you and you're still gonna try to harass/rape/murder me or other transppl so whatever. But, most people are not. Unfortunately, it's the confusion or curiosity from these well-meaning people that drain us emotionally on a daily basis. Oliver is trying to lift that burden by giving you the same talk we would otherwise have to give to several people everyday or go to some great lengths to avoid having. It's doing us a favor, and it's doing you a favor as you won't be unintentionally throwing additional weight to our burden.
Mike Mac I agree, I thought that would be better. Why did the headline have to read "Transgender Woman", instead of just woman. I can only imagine that transgender people would rather just be called a man or woman.
ok so you know that some biological women can't have children right? So what you your saying is that women who can't bear children aren't real women. and if that is the case wow your ignorant

WiseSageBum but you think if a guy feels like a girl he should go to the women’s toilet? if the person is trans and now a woman they should be free to go to a womens toilet but if it is a guy with a penis that just feels like a woman they really shouldn’t go to the women’s bathroom.
GreatBigRanz Sex: medical information that should be protected under HIPAA. Gender: A facet of your personality. Orientation: A facet of your personality.
Pizza Pie Because you only see the sex change. You never consider that maybe some of these people are in constant conflict with themselves over their gender identity and some do go back and forth. It's not exactly a hot conversation starter.
Do you think if "Henrys" parents had been stricter and guided her to live a more normal life she'd be alive. Do you think that mental problems were the main factor here, 1. thinking she was male 2. being depressed enough to commit suicide, and why should everyone else bend over backwards for people who don't try to live normal lives but basically punish everyone else for their delusions and are still not happy when they get what they want?

"But that dynamic of praising a transgender person's 'courage' and then NOT actually supporting them speaks to the fact that we're all weirdly comfortable celebrating transgender people while simultaneously dehumanizing them..." ... we have a bad habit of doing this with a number of groups. The homeless, the disabled, immigrants, etc. Seems like too many people like to feel good about themselves, "I'm a good person!" but have no interest in actually taking the effort to BE a good person. I have a transgender friend who doesn't like people to know she's transgender. I always thought it was because she was embarrassed or ashamed for people to know, but eventually came to find out it was because she was sick of being a "token" for people to claim how "welcoming" they were to the transgender community simply because they were friends with her, while simultaneously doing absolutely nothing to help her overcome barriers she faced daily. She can handle the people who openly hate her better than she can handle the betrayal and apathy of friends.

@@fuckamericanidiot Actually, that's not true. Gender dysphoria is a discomfort or an unease felt by someone whose biological sex doesn't match their gender identity. Many transgender people are fine with their biological sex while also being fine expressing their gender identity.
It's disgusting that we don't treat this with the same seriousness as racism, sexism, and homophobia. There are laws being passed that specifically target transgender CHILDREN, requiring SCHOOL STAFF to out them, and I haven't heard a single news outlet talking about it. Regardless of how old this video is, it's extremely refreshing to see someone actually bringing attention to our issues.
@@eksel20 those numbers are kind of confusing, and please elaborate if I'm reading it wrong, but the final (Most recent) study finds that only 9.4% ceased transitioning? Also, it isn't "experimenting on children" when said children (Who just in case you forgot, do have minds of their own and are capable of decisions) and their legal guardians are seeking out that treatment, and can cease it at any time. In my opinion, the number of people going back to identifying as their biological gender stems from the number of people who claim the transgender identity, while not experiencing any dysphoria, which unfortunately has become WAY too common These people seek out HRT, not fully understanding its permanent affects, and realize that it isn't truly what they wanted. Instead of a complete ban on HRT or any other medical transitions, there should be a more standardized way of diagnosing gender dysphoria, and only people with this diagnosis should be medically transitioning.

You know the term 'cis' was created by a German sexologist, Volkmar Sigusch who was a eugenicist who pushed laws to legalize pedophelia? Good thing it's being labeled a hate slur nowadays.
His predecessors were all eugenicists leading back Irwin gDorbrant, a sex change surgeon who did freezing experiments on Nazi concentration camp prisoners.

well transgender things can be confusing for people who don't have much information. when I was just discovering the lgbtq community, it confused me as well, and took me a while to figure out that "transgender woman" meant a person assigned male but became female, rather than a woman who transitioned to male. assuming the weather man knew as much about the issue as I did back then, it's easy to see how it couldve been a bit confusing
yes, like Trump's team trying to have UN human rights legislation altered to exclude transgender people. A move that won't just affect Americans but the entire world.
same, i was the worst of the worst. all the phobics and ists you can think of. now i realize how stupid and misinformed i was. being trans has probably been the nest thing to happen to me tbh
This is an oddly common experience... It wasn't Oliver who firmly kicked me off the pipeline, it was someone else. My drama teacher. I was one of those Ben Shapiro debate bro asshats who loved to own the libs with facts and logic (talking really fast until my opponent gets confused, frustrated, or gives up) My drama teacher noticed this kind of stuff and basically told me "Debating is fun, but this isn't how you do it. You need to learn your interlocutor's points before engaging with them" and since I respected him, I took that to heart. Eventually I realized I related a bit too much with the trans people I was ragging on not even 6 months before, and subsequently concluded that something was up. Then just like that, my egg cracked. A good 5-6 years later and I'm out to my friends, gathering the courage to come out at school, and still wondering if I should come out to my family before securing a place to stay during the fallout. Overall, a much happier person.
Look, I'll be honest. I wouldn't know how to react if someone told me he/she was transgender. I know how I should respond of course, but how I'd really feel about it; idk. Because its not natural to me, I can't fully understand it. Attempting to deny this is in my view hypocritical. BUT I would go through any length to ensure that this person has the same rights as me and is not discriminated against. Especially in legal matters. My personal feelings should not have any impact on this persons life and I'd still treat them with the same respect I treat any other person. Its disgusting that the US allows shit like this in the law. I'm not sure how it is here but I believe transgender people have the same legal rights as anyone else, as they should.
Max Austin O piss off. I don't think they're abominations or anything, I was just being honest that I wouldn't know how to react. I'm pro-LGBT. I wouldn't shun a friend if he/she told me he/she was transgender. But acting like I'm 110% comfortable with it and that I fully understand it would be hypocritical. But I guess thats not enough for you. You'd rather have me act all PC. Well too bad.
I work directly with the public and see about a thousand people a day. If someone is on the line in their appearance, and I have to communicate something about them, I say "the/this individual". Is this acceptable?
@@plixenbro5083 That's why I'm trying to make a habit of using "individual" for everyone. Based on the behavior of a good number of the people I interact with, in my brain "specimen" is the word I'm using.

Trying to delegitimize a serious issue by mocking them is sad. Cat isn't a gender. You can't identify as a cat anymore than you can identify as a train, an age, or potato. You're sad, so please, don't be a bigot
Island Insanity I mean, it kinda is, except it's honestly mainly over my primary and secondary genital characteristics. Gender dysphoria isn't always physical too - it's pretty much the feeling that one was born in the wrong body. Like, being called 'sir' or 'mister' or my old, male deadname is quite distressing. Working towards presenting more as my gender identity (female) can help reduce the discomfort I feel over myself and the fact that I was born with the wrong genitalia.
+Island Insanity (Islandinsanity) it's totally okay to ask me :) Yeah, I don't associate my gender identity with my genitals - I essentially feel I was born with the wrong genital characteristics (sausage and no pancakes, as I've heard it jokingly put). My sexuality and attraction hasn't changed, really. I've always been romantically and sexually attracted to women, which means I've gone from technically straight to a lesbian. However, I struggle to feel sexual attraction to a person if I lack a strong emotional bond to them, so my sexuality and gender identity can be described as a Demisexual Lesbian Transwoman.
Things can get really complex though. What if you're a person with xy chromosomes without male genitals who likes male genitals on people with xx chromosomes who are attracted to people with xx chromosomes and female genitalia?
A this has nothing to do with being disrespectful I never said I would deny their humanity. Also I am aware that society and societal culture changes all the time and throughout history. I never said I didn't want change, however I don't want the wrong change. I'm confident that you know their is such things that are degressive changes within society. This is one of them. What they want are rights and laws that are exclusive to them and punish the vast majority for not agreeing with their views/beliefs. I am fully capable of tolerating something or someone even if I don't accept it or them. The problem with trans people advocating for trans rights in society today is how they do it and what its based on. They want everybody to accept them and their beliefs even though people don't have to and lash out against those who don't agree calling them bigots and at the extreme modern day nazis. Which is very degressive because that puts a lot of peoples' rights of freedom of speech, expression, and religion in strife. Another thing is when you want to claim that gender/sex(sometimes I use them interchangeably) is not a product of science and basic biology, but how one feels or thinks is when I have a problem. You don't get to subvert centuries of scientific research, evidence, and facts because you it doesn't agree with how you "feel". Another thing is they don't have any solid scientific agreeable facts that can represent their group. The closet thing they use is the "gender spectrum"(which has been disproved so many times by real scientists and their studies). They also like to use "intersex" which doesn't really apply to them since that's a REAL medical problem which orchestrated by the mind or how you feel, but caused by a genealogical disorder. Also "trans" people do have a mental illness which has a real name called Gender Dysphoria. HOWEVER, they like to claim this is evidence that they were born in the wrong body and try to fix that by going through a crap ton of therapy and surgeries to be happy in their right body. YET, end up committing suicide, cause guess what.... THEY'RE STILL UNHAPPY!!! Then they want to educate to young impressionable children that they can be whatever they want to be and science can't tell you're wrong. Which is very fricking degresive cause it encourages children to not trust in science which has proven this for millennia and enables them to live the lives they are currently living. So to recap, I don't have a problem with trans people on a basic humanitarian and basic respect aspect. I DO have a problem with they're ideologies and how they want to disregard centuries of scientific facts, because it doesn't agree with their "feelings" or beliefs. You can't just reconstruct society to suit the needs of the minority and bullying the majority to agree with or be labeled as bigot or enemy of freedom. Their is a word for that its called fascism.
"this has nothing to do with being disrespectful" You literally just called an entire group of people "mentally ill" lmfao. You don't get to then try and pretend that didn't happen and say you're not being intentionally disrespectful. " What they want are rights and laws that are exclusive to them and punish the vast majority for not agreeing with their views/beliefs" No, what they want is to hold the same rights the both of us currently hold, which is to *not be discriminated against for our fucking genitalia* and nothing else. ""(which has been disproved so many times by real scientists and their studies)." This is patently bullshit, but do try and prove it with a "study" and "real scientists", by all means. " They also like to use "intersex" " No, they don't. Transgender people aren't as ignorant as people like you and actively know the difference and important distinctions between gender and sex. " YET, end up committing suicide, cause guess what.... THEY'RE STILL UNHAPPY!!! " Right, because *people like you* are discriminatory pieces of shit, not simply because they're transgender. I love when idiots like you try and use that as a mark against transgender issues and people rather than the bigots that *actively* drive them into depression with bills that *actively* restrict their rights as a human. "You can't just reconstruct society to suit the needs of the minority and bullying the majority to agree with or be labeled as bigot or enemy of freedom." I wonder how many racist pieces of shit used this exact argument, verbatim, when discussing slavery. I'd say *a fuck load* because it literally applies to every minority group, and history shows that you're not only a bigot and piece of shit, but actively will be shown you're wrong in a matter of 'when' rather than 'if'. You're so misinformed and ass-backwards on this issue that you actually think what you're saying *isn't* discriminatory, despite the fact that you're *actively* making the same argument racists make against minority races in the U.S.A., you know that, right? Go back to watching Shaprio or some other "educated" moron. You've done nothing but spout bullshit this entire time.
sup if you're trans and don't present like a cis person of your gender typically would (you're still trans) if you keep your birth name or pick a name that isn't usually associated with the gender you identify with (you're still trans) if you can't/don't wanna take hormones or get surgery (you're still trans) if someone looked at you and couldn't "tell you were trans" (you're still trans) dunno if anyone needed to hear that but I sure do tell it to myself all the time lol let's uh respect people yeah?
So you’ve just said sex and biology are completely independent of gender. Bathrooms and male and female sport divisions are based on sex (urinals are made for a specific biology). Cops describe suspects based on the sex they look, not gender. The CDC collects information based on sex, not gender. Non-trans people identify sexual preference based on sex, not gender. Neither gay or straight people almost EVER want to date a man or woman that merely identify as your preferred sex, so why such attempts for transgenders to trick people into thinking they are something others don’t want. Don’t you think this would understandingly invite the deceived into acts of extreme violence against transgenders? Weren’t the fights for female rights and suffrage based entirely on sex and not gender ?Isn’t it incredibly insulting to real biological women to have trans women make such movements also about them? Isn’t sexual harassment a problem for the female sex, and not gender (especially since almost no man would ever come onto a trans woman)? So why not just keep everything the same? I have never had anyone ever tell me what a female gender constitutes. I don’t even know if I am a female gender because I don’t know the definition. So, again, just keep everything the same.
"Look, this is a civil rights issue. If you are not willing to support transgender people for their sake, at least do it for your own. Because we've been through this before; We know how this thing ends. If you take the anti-civil rights side, and deny people access to something they're entitled to, history is not going to be kind to you." Probably my favourite John Oliver quote.
@1 Love There's so much wrong with that, I don't even know where to start. But in short, you're wrong. And you don't matter. And nothing you say is going to stop trans people from living their lives and getting their rights. You can shout into the void of the internet forever (and please do), until the day you die. Almost nobody will see it, and absolutely nobody will care.
1 Love Not at all. I mean you, personally, and your opinions don’t matter. There are plenty of wonderful, kind biological women who I am proud to know. Biological woman who don’t find it necessary to attack people who don’t hurt them in any way. You’re nothing like them, I’m sad to say.

I love it when people complain that being transgender is a recent thing. Brotherboys and Sistergirls have been part of Australian Indigenous culture for what's believed to be tens of thousands of years, and it recognises trans people, which kinda goes against the assumption that gender dysphoria is only a recent concept from developed nations. It's just not.
It seems like in most cultures there have been trans and third gender people, and it's sad that people don't realize that we've always existed and always will.
Go look at ancient mythology from "classical" civilizations. Egypt and Greece had deities that clearly didn't fit the gender binary. In the Sumerian creation myth, their chief deity specifically requests another category of beings be created to handle the diversity of peoples created by Ninhursag including women unable to bear children, one with no male or female organ, and child stealing demons (that last one probably isn't a popular gender identity today). Heck, Mesopotamia even had a specific type of priest that was said to change sex when possessed by their goddess Ishtar and the effect could be so profound that some would castrate themselves to be more like that time they were possessed by a goddess. Now, I don't actually believe that that literally happened but it is an example of mythology providing an explanation for a phenomenon common enough that the scholarly/religious caste had to explain why some people transitioned later in life instead of earlier. They wouldn't need to explain it or make generalizations if it wasn't happening enough that people asked about it.
James Endicott I think it’s Babylonian where there is a god who’s non binary technically, Asushunamir the god of the underworld fell in love with them and they have healing powers or something like that
+Rob Mccoy And YOU need to understand we humans can choose how we use OUR bodies and its none of your fucking BUSINESS telling poeple how THEY should live their life

+bh5496 its not really as concrete as you think. people get born with gender defects like different chromosomes and missing or additional genital sections all time. its the same for transgender people though even if you dont visually see anything wrong it does not match with instinct and bodyfeeling. people arent always "either this or that" since the body does not always come out as intended. there are many reasons why that could happen for instance a hormone change or a genetic difference thats not a mental illness that a psychatrist can just "fix"

R Yokoe Or lot's of people believe that all this gender nonsense is stupid and hate the way people are treating it as the next great civil rights movement. Personally, my beef is with the science of transgenderism. Many of the studies themselves will tell you that their research is inconclusive. Are people different because their brains are different (i.e more/less white matter) or are peoples brains different because they are different? Also, gender isn't an identity.
Gurren Zero What studies? What is inconclusive? It's not very clear what you're trying to get across. Gender is an identity, as is sexuality, race, and so on.
Sam Rickim Way to refute what I said and thanks for not being petty and by choosing to focus in on one irrelevant detail. R Yokoe The Claim: Gender is a biological construction of the brain and can experience itself as either male or female regardless of whatever character traits a person may have. The science has not demonstrated this to be true. If you're basing your identity on things you haven't chosen for yourself, you're going to have a bad time. I'm black. What does that say about me? I'm a woman. What can you infer about my character? I'm bi. What does that mean to you? I'll tell you what these things mean to me. They mean literally nothing. I'm egalitarian, sex positive, more liberal minded, have a passion for engineering, etc. These things that I have decided are my identity.
R Yokoe The fact that someone who had a penis is on the Vanity Fair cover showing off his/her female body indicates that there's something fundamentally wrong with changing genders. Do these people marry other people? That would be very messed up.

Am snek 616 it sort of has happened to everyone at some point.
Unfortunately our schools are just garbage at handling bullying in general and that sort of experience is in no way unique to trans people.
That's upsetting
@Tsar Nicholas II No, actually, they either suspend the attacked person to cause less drama in school for a bit or they do it because they want them to be safe at home, mentally resting. There's an underlying reason as to why they are suspended and it is usually because they want to make safe choices and most of the times it is to suspend everyone regardless to shut up both sides and all the discussions related to them.

Same!!
That's because they think all trans men and women just wear bad drag costumes.
I kept getting asked if I knew that I was in the women’s bathroom lol, kinda makes me feel good
Feel that, I am female, I idetify as such.
Why are people so obsessed with each other's genitals? Like, chill out; it's none of your business.
It's not just that. People with the most interest in other people's sex lives do so because they don't have one of their own.
So I don't end up in the situation where I think I'mma about to smash a girl but I find a dick instead cause that would be disappointing
This could be one of many reason's why being friend's with a asexual is a good idea

Thank you for your sweet encouraging words... Keep speaking truth please

Here's a website which talks about transgender people specifically (With virtually the same graphs as the news article what a surprise!!!) www.vocativ.com/culture/lgbt/transgender-suicide/
But no, what I was talking about (which you really didn't seem to understand, did you?) was the tendency of people to just press enter without reading what they've written and thinking about how it may affect other people.

I mean, there are men out there vastly more comfortable than most but my own experiences, people hate the guy that takes the urinal (even if its covered) 1 away from the wall which means someone is gonna have to get close to a stranger. xD
But I've personally yet to see anyone go on their tippy toes to see someone's junk over the urinal cover and if that were to happen, its not the end of the world. Probably wont go to that same bathroom ever again, but its not the end.

@Tsar Nicholas II because they use the bathrooms that correspond with their gender, not their 'birth gender' which you would actually refer to as 'biological'. They use the bathroom of their gender, the one which they identify with. Because that's what they are. Period.

Plus your analogy about taking a computer back to the past is dog shit.
thelinedrive It was a joke and afterwards he even said himself that people might just need some time to wrap their head around it.
thelinedrive He's doing us the favor of answering the most common and uncomfortable questions that transppl face on a daily basis from otherwise well-meaning people.

All transgender people are humans. All transgender people have gender dysphoria.
My drama teacher noticed this kind of stuff and basically told me "Debating is fun, but this isn't how you do it. You need to learn your interlocutor's points before engaging with them" and since I respected him, I took that to heart.

Island Insanity sad
"The noun or the verb" that took me a second but goddamn that was funny
Tras people can be anyone. If I looked at some of those people, I couldn't tell they were trans. Treat them with respect.
Until they want to reshape society to fit the needs of the few(mentally ill few) and not mass majority.

""(which has been disproved so many times by real scientists and their studies)."
This is patently bullshit, but do try and prove it with a "study" and "real scientists", by all means.
" They also like to use "intersex" "
No, they don't. Transgender people aren't as ignorant as people like you and actively know the difference and important distinctions between gender and sex.
" YET, end up committing suicide, cause guess what.... THEY'RE STILL UNHAPPY!!! "
Right, because *people like you* are discriminatory pieces of shit, not simply because they're transgender. I love when idiots like you try and use that as a mark against transgender issues and people rather than the bigots that *actively* drive them into depression with bills that *actively* restrict their rights as a human.
"You can't just reconstruct society to suit the needs of the minority and bullying the majority to agree with or be labeled as bigot or enemy of freedom."
I wonder how many racist pieces of shit used this exact argument, verbatim, when discussing slavery.
Oh my God thank you ♥️🤧
if youre a trans femboy, youre still trans. if youre a trans tomboy, youre still trans.
If you take the anti-civil rights side, and deny people access to something they're entitled to, history is not going to be kind to you."

I’m stuck as a stay at home mom because my chances of getting and KEEPING a job are so low that I have a meltdown whenever I apply to a job. Thank you John Oliver for defending trans people.
Love, I pray you find what you need.

To any trans person who has been disowned by their parents due to coming out; I am your mother now. I love you, will always support you, and will defend your right to be yourself.
Now go tidy your room. I love you
Thanks mom, you are amazing, if I could I would hug you

You're not my real mom! You can't tell me to tidy my room! I'm 35 *eats candy and watches cartoons* But no, that's cool that you're wanting to support and love those who don't get it from people they SHOULD be getting it from.
@@sammisabbie I may be 26 but I am your mother now, everyone deserves the love of a family and being trans doesn’t change that. Now finish your candy 💙🤍💖
-Are transgender people people?
Yes.
-Should they have the rights of people?
Yes.
-Then why is there a problem?
People.
-Like all of the other problems in the world?
Yes.
Good. Love it.
someone if they are not causing harm to you personally, it doesn’t matter how anyone in the world choses to live their life. Stop worrying about other people, take care of yourself and your own.

1:54 i took it as that guy understanding fully and pointing out that she was a woman, the fact of being transgender didnt matter. he said it in an odd way sure, but if i imagine he was saying that about me i dont think i would take it as much of an insult. he seemed to be meaning well.
Same here actually
+Rinoa Super-Genius I understand that he didn't understand, if it weren't for Tumblr's friendly reminders I'd probably still be in the same position. in fact he starts to say "aren't you just saying a woman, then?" so he already has the right idea even people who think they're progressive seem to miss.
Whofan06
"tumblr's friendly reminders" lol. good one.
+Rinoa Super-Genius i do give them credit where credit is due, i wouldn't know what demisexual or aromantic meant or half the stuff i know about the transgender community if it werent for that website.

i mostly get annoyed by the radical feminists that seem to reside there. its quite annoying how a large number of modern feminists hate trans people. every so often i get one commenting on my channel like "go die, you have no right to be female"...crazies, lol.
i also get annoyed by how they are very sexist and racist a lot of the time.
i'm so tired of dealing with transphobia that im watching this video in 2021 just to hear _someone_ talk about trans issues rationally 🥺
You should watch "Ponderful". She's cis but she's a great ally, and she's extremely rational. She totally eviscerates the TERFs.
and 7 years ago at that!
Trans issues rationally??
All you listened to was LIES🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love it when people complain that being transgender is a recent thing. Brotherboys and Sistergirls have been part of Australian Indigenous culture for what's believed to be tens of thousands of years, and it recognises trans people, which kinda goes against the assumption that gender dysphoria is only a recent concept from developed nations.
It's just not.
It seems like in most cultures there have been trans and third gender people, and it's sad that people don't realize that we've always existed and always will.
@@DigitalDaydreams same with some groups of Pacific Islanders and in Malaysia
600 approx AD a trans woman was killed for being trans and called a witch
James Endicott I think it’s Babylonian where there is a god who’s non binary technically, Asushunamir the god of the underworld fell in love with them and they have healing powers or something like that
To the weathermans credit, he did say "well isn't she just a woman?" I think that was awesome.
Megan Hess I think like him tho
But its wrong
@@byronbezuidenhout8628 not really, because transgender people would be rather be called the gender they becoms
My ex is a trans man. It isn't an easy life. But he is a whole lot happier now.
+Rob Mccoy And YOU need to understand we humans can choose how we use OUR bodies and its none of your fucking BUSINESS telling poeple how THEY should live their life
+bh5496 Because people aren't entitled to choose whatever the fuck they think is better for themselves? choosing what you want to be is a fucking illness now? smh, as long as they aren't hurting other than someone else's beliefs, it is none of anybody's business rather than their own.
Supertaldo916
I wish i could hug you for that
+bh5496 its not really as concrete as you think. people get born with gender defects like different chromosomes and missing or additional genital sections all time. its the same for transgender people though even if you dont visually see anything wrong it does not match with instinct and bodyfeeling. people arent always "either this or that" since the body does not always come out as intended. there are many reasons why that could happen for instance a hormone change or a genetic difference thats not a mental illness that a psychatrist can just "fix"
bh5496 but they are a different gender on the inside, the point being to look like yourself.

@@johnsanuy what he's trying to say is that you don't get to decide what is male or female, what is right or wrong, only God and his work (biology, anatomy). Your not God you can't decide that, it's not a choice, like your birthday , your stuck with it until your last breath.

The alarmingly large number of dislikes on this video indicates that we as a society have a long way to go.
Gurren Zero I'm sure you've read so many studies, person who used the term "transgenderism."
R Yokoe
The Claim: Gender is a biological construction of the brain and can experience itself as either male or female regardless of whatever character traits a person may have.
As a trans person this is one of my favorite clips. He handles this so well and gets everything right.
Hes honestly so amazing
