I am just a nobody who got favored by Herbert Wigwe. We were given loans and given twelve months to use the money judiciously before paying back in bulk. We were to pay nothing before the end of twelve months. I got 3m whilst some smarter people got sum of 9m. My only connection is being a customer of access bank and my qualification is being a market woman. When I heard of the gentle man’s death , I was inconsolable. No matter how you put it, the pastor at the city of David must be loaded in terms of favors and so on dished out to them as a result of their being custodian of the church. If I could be given such largesse by the bank magnate, just think of the immense generosity the iluyomades would have enjoyed. Abeg let’s call a spade a spade . The agba ballers cronies did not do well at all. They would have been more respected if they had postponed their party till a much much later date. All the monies lost as a result of the cancellation of their party would have been recovered . I think their behavior is tantamount to nonchalance .
The party could have been turned into a “celebration of life” for the Wigwes! The nation would have applauded 🙏🏾

If it was me, I would have postponed the event or better still turned it into a worship service, asking my guests to join me to honour Wigwe's memory. I'm very sure he contributed heavily for that party. No matter the argument in her defence, it was insensitive. May God help His Church to walk the talk.

In 2022, i travelled from Europe to Nigeria to celebrate my parents, planned a very good birthday party for them both. While i was at the airport, i got the bad news that my dad's stepbrother had passed. This uncle of mine loved and respected my dad, so uptil today that party never took place and I lost everything paid for.
That's how it should be!

In 2009, we planned my dad's 87th birthday. All preparations were on, but one week to the event. My dad's first son in law suddenly passed away. The birthday was canceled and never done until dad passed away. So honestly, they should have canceled that birthday.

She turned 60yrs in January and planned for the party in February. She could have moved it until after the burial for the respect of the dead. Yes a minute of silence was given to them but I personally would have moved it. It is a pity that as Christians we don't really understand what it means. May God help each of us to be better than our yesterday.
My pastor wife Dr beckky enenche cancelled her birthday party because of all that happened during end sars, those died in end sars weren't members of dunamis but my pastor and his wife's were sensitive enough to cancel every arrangement made for her birthday party and only empowered the widows and less privileges after the date.
That's a called woman of God.
Today I choose to discurd the opinion of the " set of people" supporting the party. This trafedy waa enough to have anyone put everything on hold and give the man a little respect. May their souls rest in peace, amen!!!!

Bitter truth, the church is where people are used by pastors to achieve their goals and when they are through, they discard such individual. They just find out that the Herbert family is no more and of no use again to them as such the action by them to go on with the birthday party.

This is a true reflection of a Zimbabwean saying translated to mean ‘people don’t skip dinner over another’s problems’. This means no matter how much human beings sympathise with each other’s problems, they still go home to eat. I know this sounds harsh, but human beings will always look after themselves. We have all felt so much empathy whether it’s here on your site Neze where you have shared stories on some of the most heart wrenching cruelty that goes on in this world or the loss/suffering of a close one. But, we still do everything needed to keep ourselves alive, be it going to work, eating, personal hygiene etc. That is human nature, we will never grieve or feel the pain in the same way those directly impacted do, sadly 😢

This brings us to a very important question regarding this pastor and his wife, which is whether they just considered the couple to be their spiritual children or just one of their most generous congregants. If they saw them as their spiritual children, they would feel the pain differently, because they would be directly impacted. By the way, I am so sorry for your loss, best friends are special and hard to come by. 😢😢

When I tell people that the spirit of humanity has left the churches, they often don't understand. However, this story provides clear evidence of that.
About a year ago in this country, a secular musician named Davido lost his three-year-old son in a swimming pool accident. The nation mourned as if a president had died. Condolences poured in from everywhere. People held candlelight vigils in solidarity with Davido, despite not being personally connected to him.
The most striking aspect was that fellow secular artists, both in Nigeria and abroad, began canceling their shows to mourn with Davido. These were major events with tickets already sold and contracts in place, worth millions of dollars. Despite the financial and legal implications, they canceled these shows.
Remember, these were secular musicians who usually compete fiercely to draw the biggest crowds and sell the most tickets. At that moment, they didn't care about money or fame; they cared about humanity. Ironically, these so-called "unbelievers" demonstrated a level of humanity not expected from the secular world.
Now, let's talk about the pastor's wife and her birthday celebration. This was a pastor, a supposed embodiment of Christ-like humanity and selflessness. Herbert, a dedicated member of their community, died tragically along with his wife and firstborn son. Yet, she chose to go ahead with a lavish birthday bash for her 60th birthday. What made turning 60 more important than demonstrating the spirit of humanity that Christ exemplified?
This party could have been canceled with no legal consequences. Even if she wanted to celebrate, it could have been a more modest affair, perhaps even a memorial. Many people, instead of throwing grand parties, use such occasions to visit prisons, hospitals, orphanages, or engage in other philanthropic activities.
If this woman had canceled the bash and instead held an event to honor Herbert's philanthropic lifestyle, she would have been celebrated worldwide. She could have marked her 60th birthday by cutting a simple cake in the presence of her guests while also mourning one of her most dedicated followers.
Last year, Peter Obi celebrated his 62nd birthday by asking people not to send him gifts or throw parties but to donate to the poor instead. He spent his birthday with disabled people and cut his cake in their presence, showing solidarity with the many suffering Nigerians who are often forgotten. Here was a politician doing what many pastors would not.
Herbert's death was a tragic loss of an entire generation. It makes one question the true value of service in the house of God. Does it really please God? Shouldn't such a faithful servant be blessed with a long life as recognition of his dedication? This incident has shown that bad things can indeed happen to good people and that serving God's house doesn't necessarily protect one from tragedy. What will be, will be.
What the woman did showed she is just a pastor wife and not a spiritual leader. It's a moral tragedy that has shown the world that the church is not a place where the weak or sufferer is given succor. If indeed RCCG is for Christ, that woman and her husband will never preach there ever again. But their transfer to another church parish clearly showed that even the founder of the church and his body of administrators are no different too. They are all the same... Selfish and inhumane.
Hmm! On your last paragraph, I disagree but agree with others. As a member of the Church, a worker and in the same Apapa family of the Iluyomade's I have my resentment as to how some HOD behave and I love many of the HOD as well and at the end it boils down to how spiritual sensitive many of Church leaders are have never been in support of their actions from the first day of that insensitive birthday celebration and I have been commenting as well.
But on the Church governing council decision, I think is the best for everyone bcs what you are indicating they should do to them is to cast them away totally which is nod Christ like, I think they are already going there a lot already and has learned the had way. From that new big Church on Island to another Church on mainland? That is not as sophisticated as their formal one? I think that's is enough.
I can't be analyzing how it's is enough by writing and being a member and a worker in of the Church,that have knowledge of their influence trust me it's a big factory resetting decision to them.

This is the kind of world we now live in. A similar thing happened in my church and I quietly walked away.
My candid honest and bitter truthful advice to all is to just do what of pleasing to God almighty and forget church. I repeat forget the hypocrisy in the Redeemed church especially. I have my justifiable reasons and in case you choose to come for me I will give them to you anyhow. Thank God judgment will start from the church. They preach and make you believe that all is vanity yet live lavishly. Christians stop worshipping your church leaders and live a life that is worthy of praise and honor to God.
They were celebrating their win and that's what their god wanted. It's obvious now they have everything to themselve. May God open our eyes and direct us to real men of God. For me, i really don't care about the timing of the party. Yes the passing of three people from one family (rich, wealthy, or poor) is unimaginable, and no one should experience it. It will take eternity to heal such pain.
However, the party was such a mess and very irritating😮😢 to me.
When i heard th 15:01 e story about the party initially, I'm like did they not see another Christian artist to perform at 60th birthday? is pastor N.Bassey not an RCCG pastor and a globally known gospel minister? why the choice of a circular artist? I don't know why people still get shocked by human beings behaviours regarding certain matters. I'd get offended if someone in my family passed away and another family member (blood or not) held such party. But if it's a friend or church members, let them do as they wish. If the deceased meant so much the action will speak for itself.
I lost my grandma in 2021 and my best friend didn't even pay me a condolence visit. Mind you we live in the same city, just 30 minutes drive away. I confronted her after a month and the friendship never remained the same. I was there for her the moment she lost her grandma yrs prior, but she couldn't do the same for me. Even when I got married last yr she never said congratulations but shared a RUclips link of her latest "gospel" song with me 😂😂 humans will always be humans.

9 nine days after Herbert's passing with his wife and child, was when this gaudy birthday party held!! It has just become clear to me today listening to Barr Neze😮😢 I thought it was weeks after and i was still shocked!! It was an insensitive show of shame!!

I could remember when I lost my mother that a particular woman that happened to be our neighbour acted in a very insensitive manner.
When invitations where sent out I made sure non was sent to her family and I told her one day she came to greet and do high service that she shouldn't border coming for the burial because I will walk her out.

If this madam took ill just before that birthday date would the party have gone ahead? Truth be told, sacrifice is the only true test of love. What can one forgo on the altar of love? Sycophancy is always mistaken for love when the wealthy and influencial are involved. The Leadership of the City of David never truly loved Nwigwe; they simply used him over the years. A man whose conscience towards God and men is questionable has no business on the pulpit. In the parable of the lost sheep Jesus made it clear that the sane thing a good shepherd would do was to go after the lost sheep. Even though this parable referred to the saved and unsaved, it is nonetheless relevant in the issue under discuss. It was a time to mourn and not to make merry.
I am beginning to think that God needed to fix some things in the City of David and so dulled the reasoning and conscience of the leaders so as to expose the goingson in that Assembly. Who knows, perhaps judgement has already started in the House of God as contained scriptures.
The wise errs and learns from it. The Pastor and his wife should humble themselves before God in true repentance. They have failed woefully in a major test of their stewardship. They are to give account of the sheep under their care. Only God knows how many brethren in the City of David have had their faith wrecked by this misadventure; as they wonder, ' if this could happen to Nwigwe then I am certainly expendable in this Assembly'.
SURELY, THE FLESH IS AT WAR WITH THE FULL CONTROL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE LIFE OF A BELIEVER. CHRIST HAS CONQUERED THE DEVIL AND WE MUST RISE TO COOPERATE WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT TO CONQUER OUR FLESH. (1 Corinthians 9 v 27 ).

Thank you for the very unbiased report about what transpired. Well, people are different, and so, they may have their reasons for carrying on with their party. However, it generally went against the popular thoughts that the party should have been shifted a little bit. Now, the consequences are unfolding, not unexpectedly. I think that they had enough time to respond to the hues and cries but they chose to remain silent, and that must been taken as a lack of remorse. The RCCG Governing Council, after due investigation of the issue, decided to transfer the Snr. Pastor to another parish, probably to douse the tension. We however heard that he refused the transfer, and that now warranted the suspension for three months. It has just been speculated lately that he has resigned from the Mission, but I can't confirm that presently.

The deaths of Mr. Herbert and half his family was so heart breaking for I who was a total stranger that never knew of them until they died.
I felt so down for the entire week & beyond.
There was too much good history between his family, church & the birthday celebrant, it wasn't nice to move on the way she did.
Personally, IF for any reason I couldn't cancel my party, I'd have not made it so loud & vain.

Well summarised Neze, simply put, the birthday celebrations ought to be postponed as mourning wt those that mourn.. Life comes first over any celebrations, especially as it pertained to the loss of Dad, Wife & their Son... It's quite insensitive tbh! A week after burial would have shown that the Celebrant is a True Christian & a Pastor that believes in the Word of God wt Evidential practice of it...

Genuinely asking; is the Church a business? Does it have shareholders? I ask because if this was about the passing of a poor Church member, would we be talking? The question is : should the Church treat its members differently according to their donations? If yes doesn’t it contradict the Gospel? Would we be angry if a poorer Church member passed and she had her birthday anyway?

Death is sadness and birthday is happiness two different things yhat can never be brought and compared under the same canopy. A grieved heart can't truly celebrate no matter how important the celebration is. It wasn't even a matter of money and efforts wasted. The matter cannot be overflogged.

Neze, can you please cover a topic that is of interest? Why hasn't Lazarus Muoka of The Lord's Chosen buried his wife yet who died last August? He's been extremely quiet about her death. That's his 2nd wife that died. He even prevented his members from raising suspicion concerning the matter. Why are top people in this church dying? Over the years, busloads of their church members have died. I'm talking about 12 or more people dying nearly every other year at once, talkless of those that die in between. They believe in raising people from the dead, but yet she hasn't walked out of the mortuary.

This is a business center attended by fellow business people to get connections to further their businesses. I don't know why everyone is making a fuss about the party! Like every good business life will go on even if the CEO dies. My only issue with this is that this business center is most likely listed as a non-profit organization so they are probably not paying state taxes!
