War for Cybertron has been my favorite line of Transformers in a long long time. I didn’t really like the Prime Wars trilogy and all the movie lines from the last two films were trash. Hasbro is doing great with WFC and Studio Series.
Agreed. I recently started collecting Transformers figure because of Siege and the trilogy. The line just looked so much better than previous lines because of all the detail just like a mini-Masterpiece as many people have stated.
I never thought I'd say this, but I like them even more than G1; they have most of G1's qualities and none of the defects. I've never been a fan of masterpiece tf's; they're unnecessarily complicated.
Interestingly Astrotrain is based off the Japanese D51 steam locomotive, 170 of them are preserved and 3 are in Service. And that removable part in train mode is a "Tender". A tender is a essential thing.for a steam locomotive cause it stores coal or oil depending on the steam locomotive type. There can be also two tenders. One for coal or oil while the other one for water. The Flying Scotsman, S.P 4449 and other steamers have that. As for the shuttle mode it well represents the Space shuttle Columbia. Also there has been a theory that he is a D51 steam locomotive..i believe he is a mix between the D51 and D62.
Just to let you know Optibotimus, the car that holds the coal is called a tender. I grew up with an interest in trains, and some of my favorite locomotives are steam locomotives.
For those wondering. There is no difference between the Siege one and the Earthrise. I believe they just repackaged the Siege ones coming out after Jan. For those who got the Siege Astrotrain: The package is the same as Deluxes. The star map includes Caminus.
I can't believe it took Hasbro 35 years to give us a cartoon color scheme Astrotrain toy at mainstream release in America! Most of the previous Astrotrain figures in CHUG with cartoon color schemes were Takara Japanese exclusives. This figure looks awesome and has great alt modes. The shuttle is slightly unfinished and the price is $15 more than I think it's worth, but I'm still getting him to replace my aging 2006 Deluxe Classics. Excellent review Paul!
Of all the times I've been going to Toys R Us and other stores past 8 years, i have never seen an Astrotrain or Blitzwing on the store shelves in around Los Angeles. Only a G1 reissue The separated pieces 15:19 would have been good to cover the exposed part of the shuttle. Bot still looks good
No one has yet made an upgrade to that incomplete shuttle mode? "More space to work" Magic Square Toys exists... Hope they make an upgraded Blitzwing too
It's genuinely 'challenging' (a moment of silence) to get perfect figure representing this character. But if one were to take all the (official) Astrotrains ever made and sort of 'piece them together', he would indeed be 'perfectly' represented in jigsaw fashion. The G1 had die-cast metal parts, rolling wheels, sublime scale-model type vehicular modes and total colour-swap features between his two vehicles (specifically the Japanese version). The Timelines had the right (massive) 'Leader' size. The Classics (Henkei deco) had the modernization & vehicular timelines balanced (Earth forms) in the same manner the Titans Returns had them equaled out (Cybertronian forms); plus the former could link up with either Jetstorm or Sky Shadow (both redecos of Cybertron Jetfire/Galaxy Force Dreadrock) in flight mode to simulate an aerial lift-off feature. This particular version is the only one I am yet to acquire (having neither the sense of urgency nor getting the true 'vibes' of the character in any significant way) despite the current massive post-apocalyptic price slashes everywhere; as he lacks a little from every aspect (amounting to an all-round failure/misfit, perchance?) Hmm...something seems out of place from every vantage perceivable... (I hope this makes at least an ounce of sense.) ;-) It almost seems like your awesome skills as a renowned reviewer vastly outshines the figure itself - hence 'jettisoning' it right out of the limelight into the endless void of space! Keep up the awesome spirit, man! :-)
I was actually lucky this came out. For some reason, many of the final Siege figures weren’t appearing in Canadian stores, Astrotrain included. But I finally got my hands on him when they released Earthrise.
Hey dude! Update on this figure: he is in stock every where is the only leader class out there in Walmart right now. Got mine today and he’s really good
My guess for the third phase of WFC will be the events of the original movie or what happened afterward. So hopefully a new Rodimus figure and some others that need a less gimmick centric design or just updates in general. The PotP Rodimus was cool but it had issues because of the gimmick.
Great review I bought him last week in the end of the siege line... at 50% the original cost. so great catch for me The left knee joint on mine is loose though :( but I dont have the stress mark on the pieces you show at 17:10. I was relieved at 7:11 because mine does that too and I was wondering if I was the only one plagued with this problem. Keep up the great work!!
This is a pretty cool new version of Astrotrain, even if it's strange to get 2 versions of the same robot from the Siege and the Earthrise lines, I did see the Siege version not long ago (along with the exclusive G1 Astrotrain from Walmart), the shuttle mode is not perfect because of the back side, but he's got a great robot mode! It would be cool to get a new Blitzwing as well, maybe in the next WFC line, who knows? And how about a few Autobots triple-changers as well? Great review as always, Paul!
...we already got multiple Autobot Triple Changer peeps, especially if you count Metroplex, Fortress Maximus, and Takara exclusive Grand Maximus. One thing that i like is that he is solid and heavy for a plastic figure he feels as heavy as Ultra Magnus and my version has the dna upgrade kit they kinf of feel the same weight
Seeing this guy makes me wonder if we'll get a Blitzwing in Earthrise or the last part of the trilogy. I really hope so, but we do have a good one all ready in Titans Return.
this seems like a great figure. i just wish it were a commander class like jetfire. to me, astrotrain is massive. i didn’t start watching the g1 show until surprisingly recently but i love the 1986 movie and that was my introduction to the character. i will always remember how all the decepticons, including the absolutely massive devastator, fitting inside. i just wish that this figure’s robot mode reflected that. i was actually shocked to see how much taller the titans return figure was, considering he’s a voyager class.
