    Seasickness is caused by conflicting signals in your brain caused by the difference in what you see with your eyes, and the movement felt by your inner ears. This very simple technique encourages your brain to ignore the information being sent to it by your inner ears, and as a result you don't feel seasick!

    went on a 3/4 day fishing trip out of dana point. haven't been on a boat this size (65x20) in over 15 years. had never been out on a boat at sea without getting sick except for a giant cruise ship. It wasn't very rough out, pretty calm day, however, I tried this earplug trick, plus not drinking coffee and to my surprise and delight I didn't get sick at all!!! I really think it helped. Didn't want to do the patch because of the side effects. Glad I found this and tried it.

    I want to add this bc I found something that works for me and hopefully it works for anyone out there. I’m very prone to getting sea sick I have thrown up almost every time I’ve been on a boat besides the past 3 times. Idk why this works but if you take Dramamine less drowsy 2 hours before your trip and then take a Dramamine nausea medicine pill right as you’re getting on the boat it makes it to where I can ride any boat and I am never sick after that. Just make sure you eat before taking medicine. Also it gets rid of anxiety for some reason idky but it calms you down a lot and you don’t have a worry in the world. Ik this works for me but hopefully it works for everyone out there that easily gets sea sick like me.

    I get horrible motion sickness and for years have been using chewy ginger candies as well as chunks of candied ginger from the market. More recently the herb craze has made ginger capsules available. When I leave for the boat I down two caps with 16oz water. I bring ginger beer (no alcohol) answer sip on that if things get funny. I also bring th various ginger remedies with me. It's what has enabled me to go out in weather much worse than I ever should have been in!

    was out in the solent sailing recently with an ear infection, in one ear. had the same effect as your ear plug trick. was able to read the newspaper without feeling queezey. usually when I go ashore to the toilet or shower cubicle everything is swaying about up to 48hrs after, no such problems with an ear infection. not suggesting you start poking things in your ears or swimming too deep in dirty water, but if you haven't packed your ear plugs it's another option. usually use Biodramina tablets though, may need prescription.

    I absolutely love sea fishing, unfortunately due to suffering so badly from sea sickness, I won't go deep sea boat fishing.
    I have tried it twice, and the last time I was sick 6 hours out of the 8 at sea!!
    Talk about an expensive way to get sick, I could have achieved the same thing for half the price down the pub! Lol.😆
    I have also been told that anything that contains ginger also works fantastically well! 👍😊

    Will give this a try as well. We keep motion relief bands on board for those in need. They will even stop a bout of illness after it's started. It's weird to get used to the slight electrical impluse but since it works those in need welcome the sensation.

    As others may have commented, your cochlea is where your body converts sound to nerve impulses to the brain. Balance and movement is sensed by the semi-circular canals, not the cochlea. Otherwise, fascinating way to prevent seasickness. I'll keep it in mind.

    • @SailingBritaly
      @SailingBritaly  6 лет назад +3

      Hi Mike, you are correct that it is indeed the semi-circular canals and otoliths which send impulses to the brain regarding orientation. I should have continued to use the term 'inner ear' so that the video would have been 100% correct. In my defence though, having a single earplug inserted does not have any effect whatsoever on the signals produced by the semi-circular canals or otoliths - it only has an effect on the impulses being sent to the brain by the cochlea (the sound in that ear is muffled compared to the other ear). The brain presumes a damaged inner ear 'assembly' 😂 and ignores all signals being sent from the inner ear. The main point though is that this trick can help people feel seasick! Thank you for watching and commenting. Fair winds! Chris (& Rossella) 👍

    • @AusMarineRobotics
      @AusMarineRobotics Год назад

      maybe it works by increasing pressure on the middle ear generally and that pressure restricts fluid movement in the semi-circular canals?

      Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting. Sorry to hear that you suffer so badly from motion sickness. It might be worth another try wiith one earplug put really deeply inside your ear so your brain thinks there's a problem with your inner ear. If it does work you might even be able to use it on your car journeys! If it doesn't work then you've lost nothing... Fair winds, Chris & Rossella

      Sailing Britaly worked great for me but not so well with my wife. On the other hand it was pretty snarky out there, 2m in 6 secs with occasional 3 meters in there just for fun, ugh.

    • @SailingBritaly
      @SailingBritaly  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Victor, we're glad it was hepful for you. One thing to check is that your wife had the earplug in really deep into her ear - Rossella had a tendency to put them just into the outermost part of the ear but that didn't work, the earplug has to be rolled between your fingers so it becomes very thin and then pushed right inside the ear canal. After what I have read on the comments here, it may also be worth trying the earplug in the other ear. The seas you were certainly a good testing ground anyway! Fair winds, Chris & Rossella 👍

    • @MrOptioneer

      Let me start this follow-up report by saying that I am very ambidextrous. I write right-handed, I eat right handed, I play most all sports left-handed. Anything for power I do left-handed, anything for finesse I do right handed. With that being said I put an ear plug in my left ear and we sailed from great Abaco to Charleston and did very well, the Seas were relatively good. The largest Seas we saw were probably some seven to ten Footers. I did have a bout of sickness lasted Maybe two to three hours and passed. After reading all the comments I wonder now if I should have placed the ear plug in my right ear for the elimination of the nausea completely. It definitely requires more research on my part. Later this year I'm sailing from Grenada to St Lucia I'm not sure that sailing grounds will really put to the earplug idea to the test. I think not, so at this point I'm on the fence I cannot really say that it worked for me. we were at Sea just under two and a half days.
      at this point I have to say my results are inconclusive
      on the positive side of this test I was able to sleep below deck in my cabin and rest much better than my previous trip to Bermuda

    Thanks for this tip and is there a form of severe seasickness that you can help with? I wasn't aware I had this problem unfortunately until it was to late. -_- Anyway 2 others on the boat were seasick. One laid down and took a rest the other ate a little something. I was shocked with both of them because there was no doing either of these things with me. I constantly threw up until there was only stomach bile left. After throwing that up I dry heaved the rest of the time(6 hours maybe). People kept trying to get me to eat saltines and ginger ale but were not understanding the fact that my stomach kept contracting and it wasn't possible. I think my seasickness goes beyond others and they don't seem to understand this. Any advice will be greatly appreciated guys! D:

    I’ll definitely try this!! I can’t seem to fix my problem with sea sickness. Taken Dramamine ect but still get sick. The patch behind the ear sent me into a dizzy state. Was gonna try anti Nausea medicine prescription or the wrist band. But I’ll try this first. So frustrated planning a whole fishing day on my boat then coming in after a couple hours because I’m sick. I’m a grown outdoorsman and I’m the only puking on the boat. I have to choose the right day to go out and fish certain areas that are calmer.

    Would this perhaps mean that people who are deaf would not suffer from seasickness?

    • @SailingBritaly
      @SailingBritaly  7 лет назад +3

      Hi there, I'm no expert, but don't think that would be the case: seasickness is caused by the signals being sent by the inner (the vestibular system) to the brain, not matching with the information being sent by the eyes. This trick works because the brain senses that there is something wrong with one of the ears and so is more inclined to ignore signals being sent to it by the inner ear in question. If a deaf person inserts an earplug into one ear then I don't think the brain would have reason to change any of its calculations. You do pose an interesting question though... Do blind people get seasick?... Fair winds, Chris (& Rossella) 👍

      Not true. I've sailed plenty in rough seas and still get seasick. It's true that the threshold at which you become seasick will go up, but if the sea's big enough and you're prone to it, you'll get it. I'd like to try this suggestion.
