As a civil engineer let me explain. Concrete has lot of strength in compression. BUT, when the shot is fired a huge air pressure is generated in the centre of concrete, thus creating a tensile force all around the centre (hoop stress) , AND concrete very very weak and brittle in taking tension forces, that's why we use steel reinforcement in concrete. Do the same Experiment with rings of steel wires/bar around the core. It won't break. It will crack but take it completely.
Concrete cracks at the easiest point of relief. By sticking the barrel into the middle he created a weak point. Now the force only needs to break 6" in any direction to break. Like the original commenter said, add rebar rings tied together cross-ways with straight rebar around the perimeter would be a different story. Also increase the dimensions of the concrete mass to 4' round by 4' deep... and if you really want to go crazy, dig a 4'x4'x4' hole in the ground as your form instead of a 5 gallon bucket. The concrete may crack, but wont fail. The barrel however.... no guarantee
Exactly the practical kind of tests I need to see. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been at the range and accidentally stick my AR barrel down in wet concrete. Keep up the good work guys.
@metooo-zo6dd to me it dosnt look like they tried to hide it, I also feel like the barrel being uncovered and allowed to fill with concrete would stop the gas from making it to the gas port and potentially over pressuring the chamber. (Just a guess, as I have not seen it done or tried it)
lol its not about testing a real life situation its about testing an extreme condition and seeing witch one will still be in working condition if you test for more extreme condition in controlled test then in theory there should be no suprise in the field
Civil engineer here. That is not the regular concrete you guys see used in infrastructure. It is cement paste which is a lot weaker and easier to break. The difference is that unlike actual concrete, it doesn't have any course aggregate (larger pieces of rocks) in it.
Also, there's no good frame showing how deep into the mortar the barrel is sitting. Cracks need to start somewhere, and if that sat half an inch from the top of the mix, and let's imagine a small air void left by putting Saran wrap or something to keep the barrel clear during curing, that would make the rupture seen very much more likely. I'm sure if the mortar got into the barrel, the end of the barrel sat four inches into the mortar, you wouldn't even need a full concrete to blow up the barrel. It's probably green mortar too. I'd guess less than 24hr strength.
Hey! I didn't think of that. They have found a way to suppress both rifles with a "minor modification." Careful not to get concrete inside the barrels or it will explode.
Well, concrete would be a lot less forgiving, this is cement. None of the aggregate that actually gives concrete it's strength, just the binding agent.

Concrete has pretty bad tensile strength (it can be pulled apart easily), but really good compression strength. With the force coming from inside the block, its not a huge surprise it would shatter. I’m just surprised the barrels didn’t get clogged up by cement mix
