Shot at the BMW Museum in Munich, these balls were attached to strings from the ceiling and together they created three dimensional shapes including a car.
This is servo, encoder, precision assembly of base, 5000 balls' liner control, plus superior software - very nice technology mix and I love the idea and it is beautiful. First I thought they do with no string... but there are!
@ifkewdv simple, within each of those spheres could be a supercooled, superconducting material. Beneath the mirrored floor could be a series of directional electromagnetic arrays to control each ball, then by adjusting the field strength, the balls are lifted or dropped. Or you could read the video description.
If I made a very succesful corporation and then had a museum built about it, I would kill for such a scultpure to be in that museum. Founder of BMW must be proud.
haha that looks awesome! At first I wasn't sure what I was seeing. I thought magnets? nooo they could not stabilize the field flux that way nor at that range either, then I thought hologram? No it's gotta be fine wire suspension surely.. and so it is. Had me scratching my head for a little while! Great vid geek180.
We have this in our Singapore Airport terminal 2 too I think. 2 sets in fact. Attracts tourists like magnets. But sometimes some balls get stuck mid-air. You know, just hanging around..chilling out. Btw, all strings.
Maybe strings connected to floor and ceiling with the balls in the middle. Could also be strings that resist bending (hollow tubes with bungee-cord inside, almost like tent-poles).
@jeetendrag10 How can you possibly get a non-regular curve and a regular curve out of the same constant RPM? Constant speed would mean the motion would be repetitive, and it's not. There were at least 7 different motions there, at least two were split sections and the car was irregular in both dimensions. That's not possible except with software control to change distance and rpm.
The system, as ART+COM describes it, has 714 stainless steel balls suspended from steel cables connected to individual servo motors. ART+COM designed all the hardware and software for the PC-based control system.
Old comment, but programming is probably used to set the vertical positions (heights) of the balls. For example the first ball should be this high at this time, then this high at this time etc. And the up and down movement over time of each ball creates the effect seen. More specifically, the code likely drives some motors which move whatever is suspending each ball to achieve a desired/specified height.
@MrSoulTracker9 acturly its strings :P in this video: Idee und Klang - BMW Museum - BWM INSPIRATION - Kinetic Sculpture, you can see that the balls have strings attached.
ist das eine optische illusion oder bewegen sich die kugeln auch in horizontaler ebene?? auf jeden fall eine grandiose arbeit, mit viel investition ins detail.
You know when to sides of a magnet don't want to connect and even go the opposite direction well thats what they are doing and the other magnet is in the ground making the balls or other magnet go up and they programmed it to change the force of the magnet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!but does look pretty cool
does anybody read the description: Shot at the BMW Museum in Munich, these balls were attached to strings from the ceiling and together they created three dimensional shapes including a car.
I love this , imagine what one could do with this in different shapes . Thumbs up !!
i actually saw this about 3 weeks ago and i guarantee it's a pretty sweet show!
the motion of the "balls" is relaxing, if i may say so:))

OW WOW! That is awesome... wish I could wrap my head around that kind of thinkin... trippy!
Woah, floating magic balls. Must be a great wizard that can conjure and manipulate this many balls. D:
If I made a very succesful corporation and then had a museum built about it, I would kill for such a scultpure to be in that museum. Founder of BMW must be proud.
now this is truly amazing art
this is so futuristic...awesome!

"What new devilry is this," said Sean Bean the greatest actor of all time!!!
I was there :D
These balls were amazing!
im bored at work...i started with rebecca blacks new video and twenty minutes later im staring at this...i love youtube
I got here through D&AD09, this is really beautiful
Okay now that is BAD ASS, I want one for display at my home.
bloody hell....that's beyond genius.
@MyDucatiGT1000 the discription saying they were hung from strings?
I'm speechless in awe!
We have this in our Singapore Airport terminal 2 too I think.

@PatchworxStudios
u know what a rope is right? i think of very thin strings tho
MAGNETO'S BACK! RUUUN!
Beautiful.
OMG DAT IS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AMAZING!! I love it x 100000! =D great stuff
Balls on the strings? Very beautiful ^_^. Firstly I thought it was in water :D
the effect is amazing

It is a good example of an anti-gravity device. well done BMW I've always had faith in Japanese ingenuity.
@kienocard why not just have balls on strings and motors to roll them back and forth...?
Can I get one of these for the ceiling of my room?
donde es eso donde lo puedo ver?
hermoso trabajo!!
really impressed!
that is actually cool

Nothing more cooler than magnetic force! :)
such an awesome idea
strings eh?. . .
so if you were to bump one and it got tangled...?
what are those things called?
See wat u did there, well played
@cunat10 how did u find that out
Cool! But what am I looking at? Are these balls suspended with wires or is this some genial kind of magnetic system?
good to see Magneto put his power to good use
Magnets. How do they work?
buenisimo felicitaciones mil
I imagined future like this (except the fact, that these balls are atteched to strings) :D would be very epic
That's amazing
is this done by magnets? if so can someone tell me how they work?
but will it blend?
Even I read the description, I can't see any string in the video.
That would be so relaxing to look at if everyone was quiet.
"Hey Mum, can we go to the zoo?"
"Well, we have something better!"
"Disney land?"
"No! The BMW Museum..."
¬_¬
@MrCuddlyable3
Not cams, but servos. The whole system is controlled by a PC as I understand it.
I love this installation. Physics, kinetic energy, but what role does programming play?

@ElectroHouseTunez they work by electromagnetic fields
was there a specific artist that created this?
how they do that
I was here! It's pretty cool
@DidHeDied The "show more" button is right there, RIGHT THERE!! :p " these balls were attached to strings from the ceiling "
after effects or lsd
Incredible
r they magnets??
@MrSoulTracker9 acturly its strings :P in this video: Idee und Klang - BMW Museum - BWM INSPIRATION - Kinetic Sculpture, you can see that the balls have strings attached.
Where can i Buy this??/
What manner of sorcery this be?
ist das eine optische illusion oder bewegen sich die kugeln auch in horizontaler ebene??
auf jeden fall eine grandiose arbeit, mit viel investition ins detail.
Singapore has this in the airport. It's very relaxing For those After a long flight
AWESOME!!!!
But Will It Blend?
i want this so much in my room to look at it when i'm stoned
beautiful and unknown
1:00 What's that, it promotes synergy, I'm sold.
@EMINEM4EVER98 don't you mean celldweller music? They compose all the music for criss angel's shows
It says STRINGS right in the description.
I could stare for days mesmerized by this... Lol
Would have been cool to see it morph into various BMW models throughout the years
Hermoso y Desconocido...
Mute?
@thomasmedhatt
You are right, sry for my bad englisch. There is another video out there where you can see the strings^^
IIIIII WAAASSS THEEEREREEE!! when we went to pick our new car :D
@freerunner276 are you from the past ?
Очень красиво сделали! молодцы!
i have seen this in museum..mind blowing ya
@DarkPote finally, someone else who has the troll plugin
:D
who is the artist?
Every multivariable calculus class should have one of these.
Neat! *takes picture*
is it mechanical?
or run by computer?
This is also in changi Airport Singapore
I was there a week ago, quite cool
turn the volume off?
whoa i would love this in my house
does anybody read the description: Shot at the BMW Museum in Munich, these balls were attached to strings from the ceiling and together they created three dimensional shapes including a car.
No strings attached? ;-)
there is another copy of this wonderful art in Singapore at Changi Airport.
it is possible to suspend something in the air with magnetic force
@Taobaak0 they're on strings look in the description
pretty cool
