Non-Newtonian Fluid on a Speaker Cone

- Corn starch is a shear thickening non-Newtonian fluid meaning that it becomes more viscous when it is disturbed. When it's hit repeatedly by something like a speaker cone it forms weird tendrils. The video was shot at 30 fps and the speaker cone was vibrating at 30 Hz which is why there is no blur. This is the original video with the actual sound of the speaker.
This is fascinating.
When I was a child, I played with a corn starch and water mixture and discovered that it would solidify if I pressed on it. That made it very difficult to stir. I never even thought of putting the stuff on a speaker, however I did think of putting it in a moat around my castle. The idea was that people trying to cross would use a wide surface, thus failing to solidify the mixture and then sinking. I, however, would casually walk across in mud boots.
Why wide?
@@MrInterpriser Assuming they would sink if they stepped in it, they might put a raft into it, or lay planks across it.
@@TheReaverOfDarkness oh hmm
i would advise running over it with very heavy footfalls, instead of casually walking over it. And im pretty sure if they used a wide surface, it would give them quite a decent chance, because ooblek is still not quite like water, and using boards for more surface area would work pretty well(in theory, ive never dug a moat and filled it with ooblek, but it sounds fun)

man, this makes me think of all the awesome things I could be doing in my spare time besides watching other people do awesome things.
Or watching retro gaming channels.
Ah, the primary use of RUclips right there...
And this comment makes me think of that exact thing
It's just water and corn starch on a magnet supplied with electrical power to vibrate.
It really isn't that deep, bro, how little are you doing with your life that this is awesome?

Plot twist: Its actually just the soul of Newton himself writhing around, tormented by the fluids that don't play by his rules

Just a correction to the video description, but not all non-Newtonian fluids increase in viscosity when disturbed. Those that do are called shear thickening fluids (it's the shear stress forces of part of a fluid flowing past another that cause it, thus shear thickening). There are as well shear thinning fluids that become less viscous when disturbed (ketchup for example is shear thinning).
Yep toothpaste and shampoo is also shear thinning. It stays in the bottle until you squeeze then decreases in viscosity and flows out more easily
As a fellow genius I would like to think we could do great corrections together
sheer thickening and sheer thinening

I remember as a kid playing with corn starch and water and not knowing why with a lot of pressure it was solid, and with a little pressure it was liquid. This is a cool video!
Did you try at different frequencies? Would be nice to see if the shapes or the speed of shape formation changes.
Yes, waiter? I ordered the blueberry soup but it seems you've accidentally given me the souls of the damned.

Scarlette Is blueberry soup a real thing? What's in it?
in my science class last month we watched this video and some kid in the back said, “what are they bumping to?” 😂
I'm familiar with cymatics. It's pretty amazing.
What is equally facinating is that ancient people seemed to have known about the patterns produced by the vibrations and used it for ceremoneal purposes alot.

Of all the weird things you search for and someone has done a great video on exactly your curiosity. :) Thanks Ben
Quite pleasant if you like cornflour more than you value your speaker. Is there difference in the forms you would get between using a bass speaker and , say, something more like a tweeter ?
I suppose the higher frequencies of a tweeter would cause a more chaotic looking display, whilst a subwoofer, with its much lower frequencies, would likely create slower and spookier movement.
I hope this reply, a decade later, answers your questions.

Kudos for showing this. The film looks like a Ray Harryhausen stop-action animation.
The fluid is so scared of the frequency that it, while forming monstrous beings to equal, tries to escape. Well done fluid! Love your color too :))
You've made a cool experiment look really grim. Thanks a lot.

And btw you're right lmao
This comment has probably been said before but just wanted to correct you slightly. This is not ultrasonic as your annotation suggests but at 30 Hz it is borderline infrasonic.
Just had a go at this experiment today in preparation for a Year 12 science night - what kind of driver did you use for this experiment?
We tried routing power from a 25W stereo system, but that provided insufficient power, so we then hooked the single speaker to a car audio system that ran at 200W - safe to say we definitely had the results we were looking for, although we did have to dilute our non-newtonian fluid somewhat to prevent it from leaping up as much.
cool, nice concept. How did you control the frequency going into the speaker? I'm not educated in electronics however I have become extremely interested in concepts, especially those utilizing frequencies. Good Post.
