Non-Newtonian Fluid on a Speaker Cone

  • Corn starch is a shear thickening non-Newtonian fluid meaning that it becomes more viscous when it is disturbed. When it's hit repeatedly by something like a speaker cone it forms weird tendrils. The video was shot at 30 fps and the speaker cone was vibrating at 30 Hz which is why there is no blur. This is the original video with the actual sound of the speaker.

    This is fascinating.
    When I was a child, I played with a corn starch and water mixture and discovered that it would solidify if I pressed on it. That made it very difficult to stir. I never even thought of putting the stuff on a speaker, however I did think of putting it in a moat around my castle. The idea was that people trying to cross would use a wide surface, thus failing to solidify the mixture and then sinking. I, however, would casually walk across in mud boots.

      i would advise running over it with very heavy footfalls, instead of casually walking over it. And im pretty sure if they used a wide surface, it would give them quite a decent chance, because ooblek is still not quite like water, and using boards for more surface area would work pretty well(in theory, ive never dug a moat and filled it with ooblek, but it sounds fun)

    Just a correction to the video description, but not all non-Newtonian fluids increase in viscosity when disturbed. Those that do are called shear thickening fluids (it's the shear stress forces of part of a fluid flowing past another that cause it, thus shear thickening). There are as well shear thinning fluids that become less viscous when disturbed (ketchup for example is shear thinning).

    • @choty7066
      @choty7066 10 месяцев назад +11

      Yep toothpaste and shampoo is also shear thinning. It stays in the bottle until you squeeze then decreases in viscosity and flows out more easily

    Just had a go at this experiment today in preparation for a Year 12 science night - what kind of driver did you use for this experiment?
    We tried routing power from a 25W stereo system, but that provided insufficient power, so we then hooked the single speaker to a car audio system that ran at 200W - safe to say we definitely had the results we were looking for, although we did have to dilute our non-newtonian fluid somewhat to prevent it from leaping up as much.
