The rebuild is going well, but from the last one it shows how important 2-3 more high end picks are going to be needed (and more importantly pan out) for the Flames to be successful.
Our d-core looks promising, Wolf looks good. Now we need that #1 center and star wingers. Replacing the Tkachuk-Lindholm-Gaudreau line is going to be difficult, but they showed just how a good first line can have a big impact during the regular season.

jumping so quickly to a rebuild after the hubs trade an signing kadri is ballsy yet smart. takes a qualified and realistic gm to understand his veteran core isn't good enough to win a cup, and expending valuable future assets for bandaids will never work. so just resetting and doing a full scorched earth rebuild is the best thing to do. 2024 was a great draft, they got quality assets for the vets they traded. keep it up with the kadri deals and 4 to 5 years they can get back into the playoff picture with a bright Young core.

He made a pretty big impression on me despite his lack of offensive talent

It looked like a little kid trying to fight a grown man. People ion the stands were laughing at it it looked so ridiculous. And Lomberg was the initiator of the fight! He got his head handed to him, as you would expect, but it showed a lot of guts, if not sense.
I've followed him ever since, and he's made an NHL career for himself out of pretty much nothing. Compare that to players born with great physical gifts, like PL Dubois, who just throw them away and waste their careers. Lomberg is a good addition and obviously Conroy liked what he saw in Lomberg's previous short stint with the Flames.

I'm actually really happy with the moves made to make the team competitive in the future while also being glad that the team won't be a dumpster fire in the upcoming season.
I expect a couple players (most likely from Bean, Bahl, Miromanov, and Pachal) to become a competent but unimpressive second pairing defensive unit (~24th in the NHL). For the three goalies to push each other to not be terrible (~24th in the NHL). Beyond that the forward group looks like it could be fairly close to league average in scoring. Certainly, they will be a bottom 10 team in the league but I will probably not be turning off the TV in the first period in disgust very often.

The Flames picked number 2 in 1972.
It was their first ever pick.
Now to the other parts of this video.
There's a new arena coming along, and it seems as if Conroy has been given a little time to maneuver and have a "Grand Opening" the first season in the arena. I haven't heard much more than whispers, but I was wondering if logistically, you could snag an interview with Conroy. That would be amazing! I don't know about anyone's chances, but I'm sure Craig would want to promote the "new Arena, new team!" in a few years.
I keep pointing out the Flames starting in the NHL in 1972 because it's NHL franchise is older than the Oilers one is.
I do hope this new revamp goes somewhere. but Craig Conroy has never shied away from trading players away that didn't want to play in Calgary, I'm sure he doesn't mind signing them if they want to stay.

I've never seen most of these prospects play, but just from reports most of them sound like good middle-of-the-lineup players, which is what you expect to get in the draft when you pick 12-15th every year. You usually don't find a franchise making superstar at that point of the draft, unless you get lucky and one falls to you. They did get lucky with Gaudreau, but that doesn't often happen. The cup winners & genuine contenders usually have at least 2-3 super high end guys, and those are hard to get when you're picking 12th, and we know they can't attract those guys as free agents. But this year, if Wolf isn't the goalie he's cracked up to be, the Flames might just end up with a top 3 pick.

The flames have always looked like a team in the “in between a rebuild” purgatory. It’s always been like “ok we have some really good players, like lindholm, guadreau at the time, monahan, etc. so let’s keep pushing for the playoffs” and while those players are good it never translated to an actual good team, there was never any consistency because we were only ever scraping by and barely missing or barely making the playoffs solely because of a few good players. I think the flames should have done a rebuild a long time ago, the team hasn’t been nearly good enough to win the cup in a while, the chemistry was just never there despite having some good players. If they continue to keep doing these low risk trades to try and push for playoffs over and over it’s not gonna work, tear down, rebuild, win a cup in a few years.

That Calgary is one of only two teams in the NHL to NEVER have a top-3 pick blows my mind. The other team being the Las Vegas Golden Knights (I think?), a pre-teen team. The Flames have existed for over 40 years and have never drafted in the top 3, whereas Edmonton has drafted the #1 pick multiple times, and is only now the kind of Cup contender they were back in the 80's.
It's a shame the Flames haven't been rewarded for that. I wish I could say that Gaudreau and Tkachuk made the wrong decision not sticking with the Flames, but at least in Tkachuk's case, that's obviously not true.
I don't have high expectations next season. It's going to be a looooooong 2024-2025 for Calgary, I think. But hopefully we start seeing some dividends pay off come 2026-27 season.

Edmonton fans should know a rebuild when it’s happening. The flames have a better chance at the first pick than even coming close to a playoff spot. how many #1 picks has Edmonton gotten in the last decade? So many the league had to implement a draft lottery or they might as well call the first pick the Edmonton pick. The flames have never tanked to get picks, in 40 years they have never gotten a top 3. The sad part is tredumbing had the biggest opportunity to land Bedard by just letting the 2 American buffoons go and starting the rebuild there. Instead he picked up 2 mid players at insane salaries that will cripple the future. Good call in picking him up leaf’s, now he can fuckover another Canadian team
