As someone involved in an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Program) program I would offer a cautionary tale. I was a mechanic at United Airlines. The ESOP program was widely celebrated by the local media at the time. It was a disaster. In return for give up some wages we got stock in the company and the mechanics and pilots both had a union rep on the board of directors. They voted along with every bad decision the rest of the board approved such as a failed merger that cost $400M or something like that. The company was plunged into bankruptcy after a series of decisions. The union contract was tossed out and we negotiated a new one eventually...with a new union. The stock, which at one point was $100 was locked up and could not be sold until leaving the company, the condition of course was to maintain ownership in order to have the union reps on the Board. When the stock was worth 67 cents, we were "allowed" to finally sell it. There where a lot of toxic arguments within our shop as a result....up to and including watching some old timers really going at it, like one guy had to insert himself into the fold after tools started flying, tool boxed kicked over and this kind of thing. We did get some comedic relief from it as we created a foam "tool box protector", "to be used during contract discussions". I am not sure how much this case is discussed in the those that want employee ownership, but I thought I would mention it as what we all went through.
Thank you Professor Wolff! You are a star academic exposing the disgusting inequality, injustice and unsustainable nature of capitalism for so long! Your voice is very much appreciated! Hope you can look at Mutual Aid Networks and the idea of Library Socialism (srsly wrong podcast) in future episodes. Library of Things is a HUGELY important concept to consider because it can create ecological luxury since it isn't about private profit and waste, it is about providing access abundance for all, when they need things and repair, recycling and using durable items.
It appears that U.S. labor has mainly issued statements, while unions in other nations have taken further action. It's mainly the students who have brought the Palestinian issue to the attention of many.
In 2016 and 2017 I remember how I originally thought that the labor movement would help us fight fascism. In recent years, I have learned that direct democracy and worker cooperatives are essential to organize in that fight as well. Even at their peak, US labor unions only held 30% of the workforce, which is still too low.
Organized labor is now even more fucked than it was in the 50s. Fighting for California's AB-5 legislation, and repeal of its Prop.22, is such a strong kick in the ass for tens of thousands of formerly documented people who could work, have been working, yet for no fault of their own cannot work as employees anymore, that it is utterly disgusting. I have actually changed registration to Republican and will vote conservative all the way in November. It's not a threat, it's a promise. From an accelerationist point of view, things won't get any better until they get much, much worse--it's the only way to deal with the status quo and the theatrics of incumbent disunity of democratic establishment.
Is there a way to join a movement who are looking for salt workers? I am very much interested, I would be more than happy to work somewhere with the intent to unionize it. I am in Michigan, please comment if you're looking for or know of someone who is looking for salt workers, or if you have a website or anything

Oh, I agree with Musk on that point, as a socialist/leftie/progressive. Illegals/non-citizens should not be benefitting from our government or getting representation. And, in fact, we need to close the border and get the illegal immigration under control STAT: it's harming our citizens, our workers, our unions and environment. I agree with Dennis Kucinich on this.
Organizing employees is a nice way of saying ganging up on management. Just consider what Germany did, putting labor representatives on the board of directors. Instead of fighting in the workplace, they negotiate at a table, in an office. Why we dwell on labor unions confounds me. It's a scrap, a gang, a mob activity. It doesn't have to be that way.
As a poet, I'm inspired at times to invent new words, and listening to this charming discussion, one such inspired words has risen: Hoffasized! To make permanently disappear by murderous and criminal means, people involved in Unions for the joy of Billionaires such as Trump. Hoffasized! I feel it may catch on, such lovely words can not be forgotten..., Hoffasized!
Wolff is correct, we should allow everybody in the world to vote in U.S. elections, because everybody in the world is affected to some degree by what we do!! Is the man rational?
Has he ever been rational? He studied Marxism because no one could be bothered with it. Had he been inspired by mysticism, Pythogorianism might have been resurrected.
The Pythagorean cult lasted 1000 years, while Marxism was discredited almost immediately. The eusocial species of the world didn't require his assistance, and humans were never that, nor will they ever be.
Don't join a manufacturing Union or any Union at all go to your secretary of state and start an LLC and open up a business bank account and then apply for business credit.
Go to your secretary of state and start an llc? And then start a business bank account? And where are you going to get the money to fill this account, a business loan? Did it ever occur to you that people working at service jobs are people who just want to help out the community, make enough to live and don't have any desire to try to be the king of any particular hill? CHRIST I despise basement dwellers who probably scrounge off mommy trying to insult socialists who are trying to implement Fair employment infrastructure like unions, because there's no goal of getting fantastically rich...
Yes, Professor, your ignorance continues...only the foolish equate banks to capitalism, or this "constitutional republic" with democracy. Cheers for these unionizers...excellent motivation for people to learn how to make their own coffee. And street vendors.
Galty - are you actually as dumb as you look or do you have to work at it? Professor Wolff called the situation correctly, or don't you know about naked short selling? That's hedge fund stuff,, and it's actually the big investment houses rather than regular banks that mostly do it however anyone in the top 7% who owns stock can get in on the circus... As for unionizing coffee shops I also thought it was a little trivial at first until I realized that that's just one part of the enormous service sector in the United States... And while struggling mom-and-pop diners and other small businesses may find it better to resist unions, Starbucks is an extraordinarily profitable business because where else can you sell a cup of coffee for 5 or 6 bucks? Point is,, Starbucks are all over and they all make fantastic profits so the workers should get a decent working wage...

Thanks!
Fantastic episode- very inspiring for a jaded old union rep to listen to these young people making such a difference.
Happy you had these brave union leaders on. We hope you continue to have interviews.
Dr. Wolff et al. :
Tks. much.
These organizers are so inspiring. It's so good to see people with real vision talking about the possibilities that unions open up.

This awesome “No War but Class War” Conference looks great. Will this be livestreamed if so is it on youtube?

“Fascism at workplace” -- so true 💯
It appears that U.S. labor has mainly issued statements, while unions in other nations have taken further action. It's mainly the students who have brought the Palestinian issue to the attention of many.
Attention does not mean "understanding".

It's a holiday dear...most podcasts are doing re-runs.
RUclips certainly doesn't help push up videos like this.

I thought unions were for workers to negotiate with their respective employers.

How big was the Great Recession compared to the Great Depression?
Richard Wolf your Italian was outstanding👌
This time is wake us up with being broken news not with shocking news time.

Unions never represent the majority. It's like a new medieval feudalism with guilds.

A democracy is for citizens, not Tourists or Residents. I cant vote (yet) either, bc Im not a citizen, nothing wrong with that.

Elon Musk is an Ox, and Jeff Bezos is even more phallic than his spaceship.
