Thank you Dr Warren. I really like the notion of role rotation in worker co-op. I hope you can come back and talk at length about role rotations. I am glad you are working on this. If every worker co-op insisted on role rotations, every worker would get first-class education in running a business. Thank you Dr Wolff for talking again and again about this. One person, one vote can be very difficult to adhere to.

Yeah, irregardless it depends on who takes the initiative to start the coop. So, a coop entrepreneur that holds the vision can or may have to create a team and create teams to handle specific sections of the coop. The challenge is in creating a constitution that can forsee future internal/external problems and how to solve them. So, maybe 1 man 1 vote can be hard to implement, as members will have to delegate decision making especially in crisis.

Hi, this is Jerome Warren! Thanks for watching and honored to do it again! Rick did say he'd like to have me come on again, so perhaps I can talk some more about sortition (rotation by lottery) Simon Pek is great in that respect. He wrote Chapter 19 of the Handbook on that topic.

@@IanMukewa - Possibly a rotating special committee for clearly defined emergencies? made up of members who've already rotated through all the various sections so they can better understand and implement solutions. Maybe in order to fill that board initially, the first rotations could be somewhat shorter than later.
I really wish there could be a land coop for me to join at my age (79). But I'm marooned in remote TinyTown for retirement affordability, and the friend in a major city 250 miles away fell ill just as we were starting to approach the subject. She knows tons of professionals in BigCity, but now that such a project is beyond her, I don't think any coop for us will ever get off the ground. We're all at least somewhat to the left of Bernie Sanders, so that's most of what we'd have in common.
But this business of member participation and role rotation is something I could really get behind. As it is though, 'life' marooned in TinyTown - which has included more than a few open, direct death threats and a klan celebration outside my front gate - can feel unbearable at times. I'm a very social person by nature but basically can't even speak to the vast majority of people here. Not even about the weather. They resort to screaming too fast about the least thing or even nothing at all. And I've been asked 3 times in 21 years, "WTH is Bob Dylan?"

I happened to catch a response on NPR (which long since hasn't been called National Politburo as originally joked) from a rightwinger political strategist who said she used to run focus groups. And by far the most common question was always "What's an authoritarian?" They don't even know the first thing! They just parrot what they're told to say. For instance I've been called a 'commie fascist' as if such an oxymoron could even exist. They don't know wth they're talking (or often screaming) about.

Having long suffered from aggression, bullying & humiliation by Western powers, we Chinese are keenly aware of the value of peace & will never follow the well-worn path of the West. Thank you Rick and Jerome the sessionsion was appreciated. I first came across a co-op in Failsworth now part of Gtr Manchester in England in the 1950s. It was for the time a biggish shop for a suburb. I was under 10 and all I remember being told was the cooperative society started in Rochdale 10km away and was owned by the locals. I automatically put it in the same box in my young head as Trade Unions which started in Rochdale too. As a banker in my 20s and looking back, I got the impression the powers that were at the time favoured private business who were legal persons, and so much easier to lend to. But I always liked the idea of the co-op. Something down to earth about it.

In October 2024, about 161.5 million people were employed in the United States. 6,000 out of 161.5 million. Wow, that sounds like a real success story. Prof Wolff has taught college level economics for decades to thousands of students and has also been promoting worker coops on RUclips for over a decade. I challenge Prof Wolff to name just one former student or even just one D@W patron who has successfully created a worker coop. LOL, maybe because they don't work. When a worker who shows up late for work and leaves early from work gets the same reward as the person who arrives early for work and leaves late, that is the beginning of the end. Some employees are outside smoking multiple times a day and are constantly checking their social media while others are hard at work. Common sense alone should tell you very few employee owned worker cooperatives can succeed. Where are you going to find 25, 50 or 100 workers who all share the same exact work ethic and drive? Personal drive and work ethic is what makes capitalim thrive.

Why "democratically elected" representatives and senators no longer respond to the will of the people.
The problem with "representative democracies" is that once "elected," there must be an "incentive" to actually "represent" the interests of those who actually voted for that representation. The "constitutional republic" of the united States, was designed to promote that incentive...since only the "peoples" house was democratically elected and also responsible for the "federal budget". This incentive was maintained by the fact that "federal revenue" shortfalls from indirect taxes (excises, duties and imposts) had to be made up with "direct taxes" which were apportioned among the several states and collected by them, and then remitted to the federal government.
The constitution detailed the specific limited powers of the federal government, and any need for "direct taxation" would impact the people of the several states directly...in two ways. They would have to pay both their share of the tax plus the added expenses involved in having to collect them...thus the incentive to both restrain spending as well as limit the growth of the federal government to what was strictly necessary.
With the ratification of the 16th amendment removed these restraints, allowing the federal government to tax people and corporations/businesses directly and combined with the 17th amendment (democratic election of the senate ), totally altered the "incentives" of representation...as budget surpluses were ripe for "political exploitation" while simultaneously spurring the growth of government...as the representatives and senators now fought to gain access to this revenue to "return it to the states" when those funds should have never gotten there in the first place. The growth of the Federal government, as well as its "invasive" intrusion into "everything," has been consistent and accelerating ever since.
For those who are historically literate this is why the proper description of the type of government that was instituted in the united States is a "constitutional republic" and is specifically stated in the Supremacy Clause of Article 6 and is the meaning of " We are a nation of laws, not of men." We are as a result not a democratic anything nor a representative anything, and a further examination of the actual history of the founding will confirm this despite the efforts of "revisionists" regardless of the motivation of the various "factions". Therefore, any such references to "a democracy" or to the Constitution itself, are mere conveniences of political circumstance and should be challenged at every utterance.
One might wonder then given this understanding what should and would be the primary focus of this constructed design?
That is simple: Equal Justice Under the Law...but like the rest of "constitutional republic" and also conveniently referenced this too is no longer true or possible in what currently exists. Ironically, while the concept of "equal justice" would receive unanimous approval from "the people" the understanding of how this too was lost and replaced with "other" incentives also requires actual historical knowledge. Unfortunately, this knowledge comes at a price, and is in direct conflict with the various factions that have evolved as the dismantling of the design unfolded. These will be examined in future installments.

a state governed by a democracy.
control of an organization or group by the majority of its members.
As noted, familiarity with the complete history of the founding is a requirement, while this particular installment is simply an explanation for the question posed. While the "laws made pursuant to it" are indeed in most instances passed by "majority" votes...there are numerous checks against those "laws" not made "pursuant to it". And these checks exist at every level of government, federal, state and the people themselves. Also, the Constitution was preceded by The Articles of Confederation from 1783 through 1787, and these Articles required unanimous consent for any Federal action...which confirms the primary concerns of those constructing this design: fear of central government and the threat of democracy to it.

Typical thoughtless emotional plea in order to justify removal of individual rights. No one is stopping u from helping others. And many people do what they can but have limited resources. Also u must ask how did someone get to where they are? Choices have consequences.
However the current monetary system of theft (debt based fiat fractional reserve printing from nothing based money) makes it more difficult for the avg person to help others as this monetary system creates widening gaps of wealth. Also people become complacent and think the gov should steal to help others, so people don't help others thinking the gov will. The gov will not sufficiently help. It has become a honey pot and system of control for the power hungry and encourages the buying of favors. And this system actually makes people more corrupt that otherwise would be helpful to others. If u haven't noticed the gov is very inefficient and is heavily influenced by those with money created from thin air (debt based money based on gov force that has always been manipulated)...and these people don't have ur best interest at heart.
Gov must be limited (by the force of citizens) to only protect Life Liberty and Property.
Anything else requires careful analysis and must always not violate Life Liberty and Property. Otherwise we just justifying theft.
Also a hard monetary system is required for a more just society based on mutual exchange. The gold system was pretty good until it quickly got captured by banks that issue derivates (paper notes, etc. And BTW, the money u put in the bank is no longer yours. It becomes yours to use while they rehypothecate to other uses, which Keynsians justify this obscure detail from people. You think it's ur money?....try to withdraw or transfer 20k. U will b required to jump through a number of hurdles.... naturally justified by various reasons.) So a hard money system such as Bitcoin may be the best solution so far.

@someonenotnoone "No money in philanthropy" is a reflection of a debt based resource stealing fiat money system. There may not be direct monetary benefit, but if people in need are properly helped then that generally leads to a kinder society with healthy people creating more goods and services.
But this must not be forced because u then r giving excess power to a specific group that will in turn b used against u! Amazing how people can't see this.
Politicians and Financiers are the ultimate parasites of the world. Endless examples in past and present.
Politicians will not make you free. The population needs to all believe in freedom and non-forced interventionism (voluntary charity). Life, Liberty, and Property
Any big business man or woman knows the requirement of having one foot in politics and one in business is the key to monopoly or cartel like operations. You use the power of government to limit your competition. This leads to poor outcomes for labor and consumer.

Further complicating the fact that slavery ended in 1865 in the U.S. there is the fact that all those sold to the colonies of the west, were sold first by other Africans...while the slaves landing in Virginia in 1619, were not slaves but treated as "indentured servants" to re-coupe the cost of "passage", just like everyone else. On completion of this period, they were given land and whatever else was involved in the contracts. Chattel slavery did not become a reality until the mid- century, when one of the "original africans" refused to honor this "contract" with one of his "indentured", and as a result of the court case, all Africans and their off-spring, if not already free, were now permanent slaves.

You would have to change the school curriculum to make them active learners rather than passive. But this is not possible given the high percentage of non-English speaking learners mixed into classes these days. Teachers are exhausted by this and cannot be at their best. My teacher friend confessed that she is more of a daycare worker than a teacher to her grade one students. You have a professional/educated perspective, Professor, and you have a good brain. @@breft3416 I am familiar with Mondragon, Romangna, and U.S. co-ops...as well as Wolff's many pronouncements on "democratic co-ops", my favorite being, " what to produce, when to produce, how to produce, and what to do with the profits." Mondragon, itself is a non-profit tax exempt organization which is composed of 210 companies, 60% of which are NOT co-ops. Also, the largest of these in all jurisdictions, are food related. Also, worker-owned co-ops are not the rule, and no such requirement applies to
Mondragon co-ops operating in "foreign" countries. In the U.S. co-ops of any size are also copies of "other" entities or consumer co-ops...that need to be examined on a case by case basis as to what benefits are realized by employees, members, etc. So, while the rhetoric might be tempting, the details of how they actually work or would work ( the details)
require further examination. This also seems to be the message of the interview.
Central to the question of "the idea" is the incentive or rational self-interests of this democratic one person/one vote of the variations of workers employed by the co-op. Since the number of workers would outnumber those engaged in the various mgmt functions and a clash of interests. If we return to Wolff, and his imagined co-op takeover of Starbucks
and the fact that the employees are obviously capable of continuing normal day to day operations...what would disappear is the entire supply support structure for everything needed to complete those operations, and the increased costs, since Starbucks can contract to buy in bulk of all supplies as well as the various "ingredients" and types of
"coffee" which is its main draw.
Another of Wolff's examples is the sale of the family business to its workers...of course, has to ponder the fact that prior to this possibility, the employers were just exploiters
of its employees now become benefactors...while all the "details" of an actual example are missing. Wolff has also suggested that employees should by law be given the right of first refusal, for companies seeking relocate to more favorable environments...which completely ignores the factors of why such a relocation is necessary, and also assumes that the resulting co-op will be profitable and competitive, even though all the supply chain problems also would apply, and financing for such a buyout is also problematic.
Also, while the employee exploitation by employers is the central theme, combined with the misrepresentation of "capitalism" as the cause, the alternative to this is examined in
"This View of Life" by David Sloan Wilson...with particular focus on the work of Eleanor Olstrom and existing business that are functioning along these lines.

Trust me, Lidia has a lot more support amongst the Australian people than our elites or their corporate media would have everyone believe. You know, make people believe everyone is doing it so that everyone jumps on board so they don't feel left out. Our News corp dominated media appears dominated by white supremicists, that would have people believe our indiginous cousins are a threat to individual selfishness, a selfishness that corporate capitalism thrives on. Don't be surprised if they attack her at her next election and she ends up romping in with a landslide. Our indiginous cousins are in a unique situation in Australia, and to our collective shame, bigots were able to defeat their voice to parliament by gaslighting the public into being scared of... I actually don't know. Even though I am anglosaxon myself, a British immigrant that came here as a child, I voted for them to have a voice. P.S. people are too easily spooked by the fear that they might lose something. How selfish we have become under capitalist dogma.

Why would we read Friedman or Sowell? Because you prefer what they say?

@@someonenotnoone , Do you avoid reading them because you're afraid of what they say? We are not afraid of anything Wolff has said or written, because history doesn't support his "moral posturing" and we are aware of his historical and economic ignorance.
