@@DJCosmicLatte Must be nice to have an outlet for your pain. Especially once the tears dry up so you don't have any other way of letting out the pain.
Wow, okay, I didn't expect an attempt at an encouraging comment to be met with a misery contest. Everybody's got their issues and their own ways of coping, and you're all equally valid. I didn't mean to devalue anyone else's struggles.
Very rarely does anything live up to 10 years of anticipation but somehow Adam managed it. Dark room, eyes closed, nothing but me and the record: It's spotless. Elegant is the word I'd best describe it with. No time was wasted here, everything sounds and reads perfect and it culminates in something pretty profound by the end. And at around 53 minutes it's a long(ish) experience but every piece fits. Highlights for me were, in order: Freedom, Anything, Acceptance, Alternative Treatment. I imagine I'll be going back to it a whole lot. And buying it. As we all should.
holy shit, The Prophet goes realllllllllllllllly hard and I was not ready. The third chorus came on halfway through and I was like, "hmmmm there's two minutes left, where is this gonna go?" what a song
It’s here, after all of these years. Just hearing the first song is making me emotional. So many memories. Thank you for all of the hard work into making this something you can be proud of, too. I’ll listen to this throughout the years as I did your other songs.
As a man who lives with big Chinese family, this is very comforting to listen, thank you 🙏. Thanks for sharing your pain, Adam. I know the path I'm choosing.
My Review of 10-Years by AnUnknindness by a random fan Hey Adum, for starters I am a fan of your work on YMS but also a bit of a music lover and I decided to write a review with just mixed opinions and pointers and be completely transparent and honest about my thoughts since I am looking at this through an album experience lens and not each individual track under a microscope. Here are the notes I was taking as I was listening upon my first impression. I will let the album sit with me and listen again to see if I change my mind later. Love you and I'm thrilled for you about the release so congratulations. Please don't take offense to my bluntness I am sure you can relate to being blunt about your opinions. From the first track onward I wasn't a huge fan of the vocal delivery or production. Scabs and wish sticks end tediously for me with a trail off and I noticed that this fade out is a trend and it wears thin because every song ends by trailing off cleanly to a taper, then the next track starts abruptly. Some transitional sounds or fade ins would maybe help when beginning the next track. Drums mixed very quietly first half of the album and this doesn't fix itself too much but we can debate the subjectivity of mixing. The vocal processing, delivery and mixing is slightly too bare and calls back to older musical ideas that don't work as well without some sort of modern flip or production flare. Freedom part 2 is the highlight or pickup point for me with more varied production and some really sad lyrics. Nice diddly solos with violin and guitar are mixed throughout the album which were nice moments as well. Generic vocal delivery at times but occasionally strange cadence which did sometimes make things interesting and made me smile in appreciation. Stop the Hand sounds as if it uses "fruity reverb 2" on default parameters and it just sounds cheap. This album desperately needs some brighter livelier production with more layers What it's trying to be it isn't. If this was an Elliot Smith or Nick Drake type album then it would make sense but some of this album is going for this grandiose sound when the production is not meeting those expectations and i am left also wishing you would legitimagely scream some of these vocals. When you hold a note its too static and too often to be enjoyable. I am guilty of this in my own music so please trust I have good intentions when writing all of these critical opinions. The kick drum on this album is disappointingly understated and muffled as well which is something that was pretty consistently present. The listen is nice because it offers a little more intimate knowledge about what you have overcome but I get the strong impression that you would have even more traumatic things to sing about and I wish you would go deeper into these topics. The halfway point on the prophet is pretty legitimately painful and depressing and beautiful despite the compositional short comings of the album. Again vocal delivery after these emotional moments just takes us back into bland land because the production is not supporting you enough. The woah woahs don't help either (personal preference). The answer is always less songs with higher quality between them. I can only hear a slight improvement in vocal delivery as maybe a little more varied and less mellodrama but far more than I can ignore. Strides had a moment where I felt Elliot Smith for a second and it makes me appreciate a little where you're coming from but it again cannot carry this flat production. Even the violin can't justify certain tracks. Anything is a high point but also a low point because the chords and vocal delivery are just too much and too little at the same time. The lyrics occasionally start to reveal something sad but then back pedal and I feel robbed of that potentially devastating moment. The hook to this song is my least favorite part by far even though I'm sure in Middle school I would have loved it. Alternative Treatment feels a little more genuinely delivered vocally. I feel a slight self awareness that wasn't present previously which is helping. It feels a little Johnny Cash with that bass line. I would have forgone the speedy vocal delivery but I'm guilty of rap singing faster than I'm capable of and stumbling over myself as well. This album is slightly one dimensional sonically, unfortunately. I don't care for the stabbing piano "dun dun dun dun" chords on acceptance. The horns are a welcome touch though in the grander scheme of the song it at least helps because all of the instrumentation helps build the drama. The ending of the album is much more enjoyable and I wish the entire album had this extravagance. I need to "double down" (Breenius pun), on my earlier point because, despite all of this i am happy that you are happy about your project being complete. I understand and can fully relate to the rush after you finish your album. Its like a weight off your shoulders but also an adrenaline rush and fear of wondering if people will accept you. I feel a secondhand excitement for you even if I'm not always impressed musically speaking. I think this album is a pivotal moment for you and you can only go up from this point especially by turning your critical eyes inward and using that ability to your advantage by holding your own work to that standard of scrutiny. Congrats Adum!
Idk if Adam will ever read this but here is my review of the album from AlbumOfTheYear: "Music and Lyrics written by Adam Johnston Produced by Adam Johnston Piano, Vocals, Drums, Cello, Clarinet, Acoustic Guitar, Saxophone, Ukulele, Accordion, Synth, Organ: Adam Johnston Bass: Adam Johnston, Sandy McKerchar Electric Guitar: Axel Attal, Daniel Mazur, Adam Johnston Violin, Trumpet: Ned Wilkinson, Adam Johnston" Now thats what I call independent. So much respect to Adam. A lot of fast singing, almost in a kind of rap way and it shows how he knows he isn't the greatest vocalist to hold a note perfectly for a long time. His voice performance on songs like Wish sticks and Anything is incredible, not just for somebody who isn't mainly a musician, but for a singer in general. I like the songs where he goes into a kind of Father John Misty direction more than the songs where he quickly reads over the lyrics, reminding me of some comedians like Bo Burnham or even Adam Sandler lol. Adam (YMS lmao) is a great storyteller though. I have found out so much more about him as a person while listening to this than many other artists. I would say this is actually one of the best albums I've ever listened to in terms of getting to know the narrator. @@lovisamorin4492 Really? that's awesome! Thank you for giving me music and lyrics to connect to, confide in, and inspire me through all these years.
I‘m just happy that all these dank songs have newer better versions along some newer danker songs with them. Seriously, Adam, you have outdone yourself on this one. So happy to hearing all these songs after anticipating them for so long but the wait has been more than worth it. Congrats on finally releasing the album after so much hard work, blood, sweat and tears!
I love the style of his music. (admittedly I have pretty bad taste in music since I only really listen to classic rock) Nevertheless, I love how he uses the piano and guitar in his songs. It feels really contemporary, yet kind of chill. I could definitely see myself vibing to this. Beautiful job, sir.

Such an improvement in the first song alone. It doesnt sound as forced as your earlier stuff, you've definitely grown as an artist and it shows like crazy in this.
This whole album is my comfort playlist right now. Crying at the gym type beat. Adam is the most impactful multitalented and human creator i have come across. ❤️
Honestly never been this excited for an album release before, maybe because I have been waiting for this for like what 3 years now? And it is totally worth the wait! Love this so much, congrats for the release Adum!!! And like everybody else, I am giving this one a 6/10 definitely closer to a 7 than to a 5, but that's it for now :)
This was a really touching listen. I'm impressed with the composition and range of instrumentation on here, especially with the fact you played most of them yourself. Love your lyrics, vocal delivery and melodies. The emotional narrative you weave across the record with these elements is resonant. You can tell this is coming from a real, tender place. Knowing you as an artist on the RUclips side of things, It's cool to see the... artistic parallels, despite the different mediums. I think what I mean to get at, is that it feels like the kind of movies you like, in a way. Lastly, seeing deep feelings laid bare like this, well, as a musician myself, I very much respect it. On that note, enjoy the catharsis of finally releasing this and getting it off your chest. (I saw that the opening song had a demo on this channel from 7 years ago. I think I would go insane spending that much time alone with a work before properly releasing it into the world) Hold on to that afterglow lol. Cheers.
My personal favorites are Spools of Thread, Stop the Hand, Strides, Anything, and Acceptance. I especially loved Anything and Acceptance! All of them are amazingly produced
Whenever someone on youtube releases music I usually hold my breath cause its usually pretty average and forgetable. But this? This fucking touched my whole heart I'm buying this god damn album.
Got to admit, this album is sooooo different from fragments all the others the other songs. But as I sat down to listen to your songs man, it really stuck my heart man. Great job.
This is still one of my favourite albums of all time. It just... really speaks to me, y'know? That being said the minute or so of silence after the first song can get annoying.
Cant wait for the second album in 2042! For real though, by far my favorite album of all time. If you do make another album take all the time you need.
Just finished the album. Never paid much attention to Adam's musical output, but never expected him to fit right next to the Pop Punk of the mid 2000s, albeit with a more stripped down, less bombastic sound. Beautiful Outro as well. Overall a really nice album, albeit a bit out of my comfort zone. Much Luv

I remember listening to an unkindness when i was an edgy teen and i still love the sound that you produce, such a masterful blending of all these instruments in a sort of gloomy overtone. some of these songs have been worked on and improved on over years of reiteration and you can really tell. great job man, thank you for making music I hope you make plenty more in the future and it doesn't necessarily take 10 more years!
I’m the album cover artist and I can’t explain how happy it makes me to read this, thank you,
@@lovisamorin4492 Really? that's awesome! I love an album cover that I can just stare at and still find little things that i didn't notice before, the interconnected pictures, the theme and the contrast between them fits with this album so well. I didn't even notice it was a piano at first until i went to my desktop because it cuts off the bottom half on my mobile haha
Great work!
After following you for so many years, it's great to see that you pulled this off. It's easy to hear that you put a lot of efford in this, especially in the production. Awesome to hear songs like Anything in their full glory. Congrats Adam!
I just done listening to this whole album again. Thanks Adam. It helps lighten up my bad mood earlier.
Man I've been listening to your stuff for the past 10 years now and it has seriously had a big impact on me. This album is great. Thank you.
Your music has impacted me since I discovered your work years ago and made a CD of the handful of songs you had recorded with just you and a piano at the time and had it on repeat in my car. Each time you uploaded a new song I’d burn another CD. This album is everything I knew you could accomplish and more. Thank you for giving me music and lyrics to connect to, confide in, and inspire me through all these years.
I've been looking for the words to describe how I feel about this album. I've concluded it's best summed up in these three words:
Thank you Adam :)
Adam, never stop making the things you love, because we love everything you do, keep it up man.
This is beyond beautiful. You're truly talented and I'm so happy to finally see your album finally come to fruition
Beautiful instrumentals and you can hear all the care put into every single track. Congrats man.
Congratulations, Adam. Beautiful achievement.
This album is even more beautiful upon return, I am forever in debt to Adum for the great memories I have with all of these songs
I‘m just happy that all these dank songs have newer better versions along some newer danker songs with them.
Seriously, Adam, you have outdone yourself on this one. Funnily enough I started following you about 5-4 years ago when this was just starting production and it’s been a very inspiring experience. Cheers, to 10 years more!
[Insert 6/10 joke somewhere here]
nice a tuba, I play that instrument, it's nice to hear it's use somewhere
I'm so happy for you Adam! It's a great album, so sincere and well produced. Warms my heart to see the culmination of all your hard work. Congrats!!!
I've been waiting for this album to drop for years. Not disappointed at all. Nice classics from back in the day. Thank you An Unkindness for such amazing music
man strides was sensational
So happy to hearing all these songs after anticipating them for so long but the wait has been more than worth it. Congrats on finally releasing the album after so much hard work, blood, sweat and tears!
I love the style of his music. (admittedly I have pretty bad taste in music since I only really listen to classic rock) Nevertheless, I love how he uses the piano and guitar in his songs. It feels really contemporary, yet kind of chill. I could definitely see myself vibing to this. Beautiful job, sir.
"I love the style of his music. (admittedly I have pretty bad taste in music since I only really listen to classic rock)" hahahahaha this comment is amazing
beautiful album I've been so excited for this I've been listening to the 4 songs you have on Spotify for years and ill be listening to this for way longer
Such an improvement in the first song alone. It doesnt sound as forced as your earlier stuff, you've definitely grown as an artist and it shows like crazy in this.
Just breathtaking. I'm so happy for you, this album was a long time in the making.
This whole album is my comfort playlist right now. Crying at the gym type beat.
Adam is the most impactful multitalented and human creator i have come across. ❤️
This has been so long in the making, aaaaa I’m proud of Adum
In all honesty I can listen to this and it makes me proud to be of the same human race.
Hey that's specie-ist
Neo2266 Okay well it still makes me proud that we as humans have creative capabilities.
@@EhCanadianGamer As well you should be, Heil Homo Sapiensˣ²
Really cool! Gives me mid 2000's vibes, I really like it!
Mm, I know what you mean. I think it was all written 2006-2016 and recorded 2016-2020
I love the album art, I feel like the more I look at it, the more I notice about the little details
Cheers.
as someone who doesnt listen to music too often i listen to this every month
My personal favorites are Spools of Thread, Stop the Hand, Strides, Anything, and Acceptance. I especially loved Anything and Acceptance! All of them are amazingly produced
this was so worth the wait
YESSSS! I can't wait to listen to this. Congrats Adam!
Really great to hear Adam - you put a smile on my face! Congratulations!
If this gets a vinyl release I'm gonna jump on that. This album cover is amazing.
Whenever someone on youtube releases music I usually hold my breath cause its usually pretty average and forgetable. But this? This fucking touched my whole heart I'm buying this god damn album.
It's like you are a different person when you sing! Good shit!
Hell yeah man! Congrats on finally getting this finished, well done!
You achieved your decade long goal. Congratulations man, and thank you for your incredible creations!
Worth the wait.
the last song! good stuff!
Cant wait for the second album in 2042! For real though, by far my favorite album of all time. If you do make another album take all the time you need.
One of the best albums I've ever heard in my life. 6/10
Really connected with this album. I love it a lot. Can't wait until physical copies are released. I'll definitely be picking one up
Been waiting for SO long to listen to this. This is such an improvement over 4 Songs. Just, wow. I love it.
The end to Wish Sticks gets me every time
It’s nice to have more music from you, Adam. I really love the 4 Songs EP, so it’s a treat to have a full album.
Much Luv
Unbelievable album worth the wait
Hearing Spool of Threading professionally recorded is so fucking awesome
It finally dropped! Loving it so far and the cover art is really cool!
I can’t believe it’s finally here, I’m so excited!
This was well worth the wait, this album turned out so incredible!
30:55 This is the most Boogie Woogie moment of the album.
Amazing album! Love seeing Adam's musical progression and the Anything music video is something else. 10/10! 5 Bags of Popcorn!
This...is legitimately perfect. This was totally worth the wait and then some. Congrats to all involved with this masterpiece!! 💖
I was not ready to feel the things this album made me feel. But I think in an odd way i needed to feel them.
Thank you so much Adam.
We are so proud of you Adum! What a great album!
