  • You've seen the headlines: Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says all federal funding to universities, school boards, health and housing authorities, and other entities needs to flow through her office...or she'll take PM Justin Trudeau's government to court. Bill 18 - dubbed the "Stay Out of My Backyard" Bill by Premier Smith - seeks to ensure projects have Alberta's blessing before proceeding. The implications of the legislation are far-reaching, to say the least. In this episode, we find out how it could impact Alberta's post-secondaries, including research, reputation, and beyond.
3:18 | International Relations professor and researcher Dr. W. Andy Knight, PhD student Andrea Dekeseredy, and University of Alberta alum Andy Grabia dig into one of the top political stories in the country on a special edition of the Real Talk Round Table.

Of course Danielle Smith broke ethics rules, and got away with it. A former Alberta Crown prosecuter, who was also in Peter Lougheed's cabinet, has said this.
Danielle Smith and the UCP oppose democracy.
Danielle Smith didn't allow by-elections in ridings which lacked an MLA, and she ran in the riding of Brooks Medicine Hat, where a UCP MLA, Michaela Frey, stepped down, without completing her term as an MLA. Danielle Smith gave Michaela Frey a well paying, pointless position in return.
Alberta has the lowest amount of Legislature sittings of any provincial or territorial government in Canada. Danielle Smith reduced that even more.
In 2023, the Alberta Legislature had only 5 weeks of sessions.
The UCP passes controversial legislation, right before a weekend, or before a long weekend, thinking Albertans wouldn't notice.
Danielle Smith and the UCP created Bill 8, which changes the gift limit amounts MLAs can receive in Alberta, which opens the door for MLAs to accept bribes. Bill 8, also prevents the Alberta Ethics Commissioner from being able to investigate MLAs, who break ethics rules, before a provincial election in Alberta, which makes it so that the MLAs can run in the provincial election.
The UCP also overide municipalities in Alberta, and they rightfully oppose it.
There is nothing even remotely Conservative about Danielle Smith and the UCP.
Peter Lougheed was the only good and sensible Conservative premier in Alberta. There were absolutely no others at all.
Peter Lougheed didn't trust Danielle Smith.
It's easy to see why, for those of us who know what actual Conservatives are.
In Canada, there were no good Conservative governments, since 1990.

Danielle Smith has this look of arrogant smugness on her face, and when she is being interviewed, or questioned, she isn't telling the truth.
Gullible people follow along what she says, and they don't know any better.
Danielle Smith has no understanding of how grants for research for universities in Canada are administered.
    It's a strict process.
Now, she is going to make it harder for universities in Alberta to gets these grants, which can be used for imprtant things, such as medical research, into things, such as cancer treatment.
The UCP cut funding to the public education system in Alberta, including to universities in Alberta, and they will do more of it, with Bill 18.
When the UCP creates bills, they do it without thinking. They create a bill, and when it's wrong, it backfires.

The hair on fire reaction to Bill 8 is similar to the reaction of the sovereignty Act, which included claims that the sovereignty act would scare away investment.... which we then got the biggest investment in Alberta history (Dow Chemical).
I dont see what the major problem here, and the response seems hyperbolic

    • @dwaynewladyka577

The Sovereignty Act is not legal, and it cannot succeed. A former Canadian Prime Minister has said this. In one of her well scripted press conferences, not that long ago, Danielle Smith had to inadvertently accept and admit that her Sovereignty Act is basically meaningless, and has no power. The courts would teach Danielle Smith that fact, but she doesn't know that, because she doesn't understand how politics in Canada functions, despite her being in politics before. The former Canadian Prime Minister has said that the courts would overrule it, to protect our democracy. Bill 18, by the UCP, is also not legal. Recently, the courts ordered the UCP to produce documentation that the UCP were trying to hide, in relation to open pit coal mining in the Rockies of Alberta, which the UCP wanted to pursue. Are the UCP going to try to shred those documents, and delete those emails? In addition, it has been revealed that the UCP were going to pursue open pit coal mining in the Rockies of Alberta, 7 months prior to the UCP informing the public, before a long weekend in May of 2021, or 2022. On top of this First Nations communities are suing the UCP and the AER (Alberta Energy Regulator) for negligence, in relation to the tailings pond leaks in northern Alberta. Coincidentally, the head of the AER (Alberta Energy Regulator), has recently resigned.

Danielle Smith has given blatantly false information, and lied, about this. Grants for research at universities are strictly controlled, and the research has no political affiliation. It's one of the main reasons why she didn't last long as the Wildrose party leader.

    • @dwaynewladyka577

Danielle Smith clearly doesn't know what she is talking about, and she isn't telling the truth. Research has no ideology attached to it. For example, looking into a treatment for osteoarthritis, is just research. It has no ideological bent, because it benefits many people. Research into making a building stronger, to withstand weather damage, has no political association. It's because well built structures are a good thing. The funding for the research at these universities isn't controlled by Justin Trudeau, or the Liberals, and strict criteria has to be met, to qualify for it. Danielle Smith didn't last long as the Wildrose party leader, and one of the main reasons for that, is because she has a hard time telling the truth.
