Oh my god how nice it is to discover another song when you thought you'd listened to them all.

Totally. It is staggering how good everything he made is. Um it took me 16 years to put this whole thing on.

I believe Elliott was the single greatest songwriter and musician of the last fifty years. He’s incredibly challenging to play and copy - his songs are constantly moving, technically challenging; plus his lyrics are beyond any other artist; and then he manages to sing them and record them … and his posthumous work alone is of greater quality and output than most established artists in their living careers … in any case - Elliott - RIP. As a Catholic I should remember to pray for my musical heroes who died … Kurt; Bonham … et

been thinking the same ever since I started discovering music on my own as a teen. hundreds of albums and 90+something gigs later I still think so.

Man. I fucking miss him and his music. Listen to this melody and harmonic progression. No one writes like this now. The so called pop music today is just endless variations of I vi IV V and reused childish lyrics ( ie Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, the Weekend, ad nauseum).
If there is anyone close to Elliott as far as singer \songwriter goes - pls let me know.
Fwiw, I do like Nyles Lannon & AC Newman.

Geno Turrise people that like Elliott usually like Nick Drake as well. They're quite distinctly different but there's definitely some parallels between the two.

Neil Young is really good. Fiona Apple in terms of writing & voice - but only her old work. Besides those I don't think there are solo musicians who can even scratch the bottom of his shoe.

I never knew Elliott but I too miss him deeply... However, there are many brilliant songwriters/bands around nowadays... Charlie Hickey, Conor Oberst/Bright Eyes, Lucy Dacus, Great Grandpa, Phoebe Bridgers... These are some of my favourites, to name a few. Great music is still out there, do not despair :)

I would like to throw frank ocean into the ring, he’s not the greatest song writer but he’s talented. His knack for vocal melody’s is really something else.
Plus he directly used a fond farewells chorus in part of the song Siegfried!

If i were half the musician he was? I'd would be twice the musician i am now witch is making me some sorta fraction that's not divisible by anything making me less than whole just a fraction reduced to its simplest equality and still cant seem to not have a remainder, im always trying to equate but it just ends up in a repeating pattern that levees you with an another conclusion that you've concluded.

I think that comparing yourself to others is the biggest downfall in writing. Ever since I stopped comparing I really started to feel less miserable.

If you are a quarter of the musician Smith was than you should be proud. You are comparing yourself to one of tbr greatest american songwriters who's songs each stand on their own as masterpieces. People with that level of talent, epochal talent, don't come around too often. Best thing you can do is compare your newest songs to your older ones; placing expectations on yourself as high as your are now will just make it more difficult to learn and grow
