I want to go to art school for photography and graphic design. I never thought of keeping an art/ idea journal after all the years I’ve drawn, because my parents put in my head that it was a hobby, and that it wouldn’t get me anywhere. This definitely made me re-think that. You’re work is amazing and I’ll definitely start to save my artwork now.
This is gorgeous! I would love for you to make more videos about your experience with your foundation year, where you did it, if you stayed at home etc. Although I'd LOVE to go straight to uni, I think i'm going to have to complete a foundation year first as with the AS being scrapped, I simply don't have enough quality work for my portfolio as all we do is experiments. Your style is so lovely. Keep us posted on your work at uni, would be great to see more of it! x
Hey babe! I would love to do that I'm just not very confident hahaha! Hopefully maybe sometime in the very near future I will do that before uni in September or something?! I completely agree and just to give you an idea: I applied at CSM for an art foundation straight after my A-Levels and didn't get in. Although the art foundation was such a drag and I was extremely close to dropping out, I wouldn't have got in this time around for the degree at CSM. In fact I didn't include a single piece of A-Level work in my portfolio. Goes to show really! Will be in contact soon and keep you posted if I record that video :) xxxx
Lili Phillips I feel you with the confidence thing but honestly thing you'd go down a treat on here. Yeah, seems like it's vital for getting into the uni course you want so I guess I'll just have to stick it out! Thanks lovely xx
I am going to try and tackle some of the same experiments you have shown here, they really interesting especially the typography. i also like the methods you used in your sketchbook and also the minimalist approach to your portfolio, it really makes the art work stand out in unison. your work is really cool.
I also applied to graphic communication design at csm this year, I had no idea you would be applying this year. But I can tell from your portfolio + sketchbooks that you'll defiantly get a place!! Amazing work
HoltonStudios ahhh thank you so much! That's crazy have you had your interview yet? And yes I got a place, I found out a few days after my interview which was crazy! Where are you going to go xx
+Lili Phillips Congrats! 🎉 I had my interview on Tuesday, but no updates on my UCAS yet. Tbh I love graphic design but I'm not sure if I should just get a job instead of going to uni. And UAL have such big classes and I'm quiet so I think I'll get lost amongst everyone
HoltonStudios Ah do let me know if you get an offer! And yeh me too I have been debating it for some time, always thought about going straight into work. And I agree about feeling lost, I almost feel I'm not good enough to be there haha. But then again I think the people at the top will be the ones who lift you up and push you harder so.. it's a tough one! Xx
+Lili Phillips will do. I think everyone feels the same way about not being good enough, but they wouldn't offer you a place if they thought otherwise. So just look at what uni would best suit you and go for it!
I've had so many lovely messages via Instagram - but it's getting really difficult to find the time to reply, so... thank u for this video! I'm currently at the pathway choosing stage of my foundation and seeing the genre of the work in your vis com section has been so helpful to finalise decisions! thank u again dude x
Amazing work Lili! Very well presented, good looking lil vid. Thanks for posting this one up. Really helped me in compiling my own portfolio for interviews. Have had my interviews now and got into my top choice Camberwell so just wanted to say thanks and keep up the great work.
are you able to go through in depth of each page with all the statements ? it would really help me because ill be trying out visual communications next year! thanks x
Your work is so amazing! I am going to do Graphic design at a-level next year, but I'm not sure whether to do textiles too? like will it be hard to keep on top off? I really need some advice! :) x
Well I did Fine Art alongside Graphic Communication and loved it actually. I mean it was pretty tough because they had basically the same deadlines with heavy amounts of work due but it's what I wanted to do so just powered through aha xxx
hello !! which sketchbooks are those? i really like the way they look and aren't flimsy and thin like most are. this video is a huge inspiration, thank you so much!!
This is crazy good. I love all of your sketchbooks. I'm thinking of majoring in graphic design when I go to college next year. For the last book, how did you get the images to cover the full pages in the notebook? They look so smooth. Also, what school did you end up going to?
Hey.. i am new to ur channel.. and already impressed!!.. could you plz just give an insight as in what all do u write when u sketch something or find something new.. whenever i do something, it feels dumb when i start writing! I also want to get into designing and wanna improve my creative process.
Hey, great work! Really inspiring. I might enter to college to pursuit a graphic design career and I want to start creating an art journal for future projects and concepts. What's the name of the journal you showed in the beginning that had a black cover?
So incredible! How did you make some these pieces? Adobe Photoshop?obviously your own sketches too, but the digital ones? You are amazing!!! t=Thank you so much for making a video like this! I couldn't find any online!
No problem girl hahaha I made it because I couldn't find one similar when I wanted to watch portfolio videos. And yeh basically Photoshop and a Wacom Tablet :)
I have a question about the portfolio I should present when applying to university. You had different sketchbooks, but when applying you send pictures of every single one of the pages or what ? My question basically is- how many pictures of your art did you send and what exactly were they ? Do you have any advice to make a good portfolio in a short amount of time
wow, I love your works! congrats for your results♡ I am going art&design foundation course this year sep, and I'm kind of worried because I might go to international college,,:( If you don't mind can I ask you which school did you go to take your foundation course? p.s) please understand my english error😊😊😊
Hello! I'm so amazed by the amount of stuff you have! how did you manage to have so much? i'm also doing a foundation year but i don't have that many to write about haha

Your work Is amazing!! Do You like the course? Last week I had an interview (still didn't get any answers) and I was just wondering if you were satisfied with the lectures/tutors/workshops? Do You recommend studying Graphic design at csm?I'd love hear Your opinion:)
I have a question, is there a specified way how we have to show our works? eg I have a short movie so can bring my computer/ipad with me? Also can I just put all my works in one 'book' and show it to the interviewers? xx
Have you ever done anything for a business? I'm looking for a graphic designer to help with my logo and packaging, website, etc. It's a small business so I won't need much lol
Hi, I loved your portfolio, incredible ^^ did you go to a special high school or did you do everything during your free time, without taking any class?? Have a nice day :)
Wow! Your work is amazing!! I too have applied for the graphic communication design program at CSM but I haven't done a foundation year. Do you think they accept people without a foundation year for this program?
Hi! Amazing work! I’m thinking about applying in the fall! I’m a bit confused on what is required in the interview (I will be doing mine online). Are we required to bring two sketchbooks? Also, how do you like CSM?! Do you feel prepared to get a job after uni?
Hi, sorry I'm late! I'm currently heading into my third year of BA graphic communication design at CSM, so maybe I can help! Honestly, watching all these portfolio videos, I realize it can seem quite daunting but it really isn't. I first applied for BA and had a phone interview but they instead offered me a place on the Foundation course. I did the course and then applied to BA again the next year. Looking back, I had such a terrible portfolio with such basic projects (and I think just one sketchbook), but the most important thing is to show you're passionate, whether in your work or how you talk through it during the interview. I did my interview at the college, so I'm not sure how the format is gonna be for you - maybe it'll be like my initial phone interview or maybe they've adjusted it since then. They'll probably ask about designers you admire, why you chose UAL, why design, what your aspirations are, etc. Then they'll most likely want you to talk about your favorite project you've done (which you'll have in the portfolio you submit) and just quickly talk through your process, your intentions, your outcome and your reflection. CSM is great. The course is really fun and everything (the people, atmosphere, coursework) is more laidback than you could ever expect. The tutors are mostly really nice, you just sometimes have to have thick skin as the regular crits/feedback sessions we have can be quite harsh. Going in, I was so anxious about uni but I really love it now and I've never felt more comfortable. I'm really going to miss this place - I'm even thinking of applying back to CSM for my MA so I can stay longer haha. Yes, it's obviously got its flaws and some tasks on the course can sometimes feel pointless, but in the end, you realize how much you've developed as a designer. I do regret not working harder during my time at uni, so give it your all and you'll get so much out of it. As for job prospects, so many people are going on to find quick success and good jobs, but I'm not sure I'll really be ready to work right when I graduate... that's just me - that's why I'm wanting to go directly into MA, so I can develop some more. I will say though, during my time at UAL, my dream career has shifted a lot. I started out wanting to be an entrepreneurial designer and about 2 years in, I fell in love with the film industry and now want to break into film/film design. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck :) Just be yourself, show your true passion and you'll be fine! Take care.
@Grace Clark I'm glad I can help! Obviously my experience was different to a typical process since I initially applied for CSM BA and they offered me Foundation at Camberwell instead. I can't give you an objective answer but judging from that (and the standard of work generally being much lower in Foundation), it must be significantly easier getting into Foundation. I did not enjoy it though, but it depends on where you do it. I felt like I was in a middle school art class or something, it was... not good. I have heard really good things about the CSM Foundation courses though, so I really recommend looking into those. They apparently take the course more seriously and it's at least worthwhile. I personally can't advise you on getting into CSM Foundation (I'd imagine it's the same across the board though) but my friend did her Foundation here. I can always ask her and I'm sure she'd love to give some of her insight if you'd like to know more! Whatever you end up doing, just know it's worth it when you progress into BA :) If you have any other questions, you can always message me here or on IG @artofnb (black/orange icon)
I have a couple of interviews coming up, UAL London Communication College, Leeds Art University, Falmouth University and University of South Wales. I bought the portvolio with the sleaves rather than a folder... does that matter?
Hey! I'm applying to university this year and have interviews coming up with CSM, AUB, Samberwell, kingston and UWE. Do you have any reccomendations as to what to include in my portfolio, should I use everything or focus on a a few projects in more detail? I'm currently doing the Art Foundation so can include recent projects. Thanks! x
Hey girl! I wouldn’t really say you need anything in particular - I would just say take your sketchbooks which you are most familiar with / recent ones and make sure your portfolio shows your development of ideas, including failures etc which I think can sometimes be more important than the final outcome. They just want to see your potential and the way you work! Good luck babe xxxxx
lol the uni i applied to made me create a digital one wtf but the others tell me to bring it in... ima just bring in my Graphics book and print out my digital one
Lili Phillips Oh ok, Im planning to apply for graphic design however I’m currently doing IB and they don’t offer a graphic design class, they just offer Visual arts in general. Do you have any suggestions for what I should do then? And Do you have any tips for preparing a portfolio for graphic design? Thank you
Chloe C hey! I actually got it from The Works as a last min option, it was only about £6 haha - I had to add a bit of wood inside though to make it stronger as it would have just bent all my paper. Xxx
Hi! I'm a quebec student and I'm interested to pursue my studies in UK. My problem is I have never done a portfolio before and I don't know how to start it. Could you give me some advice?
Sam Routhier I would just say to make up your own projects and document start to finish, and any personal sketchbooks etc! As long as you are confident in talking about your work you shall be fine babe xx
ah, fair enough. i went to csm graduated 2013. i had a year in southampton row then moved to kings X. its like being in a shopping centre (which is actually what the building was originally intended for). very strange place. quite a few of my course mates left to go to camberwell in second year, the course is so much better there. but hope you have a good time. it works for some people, less for others.
Also just to let you know the course has changed (since last year) to graphic communication design, so the course offers a lot more than what it used to! X
ah very interesting. I did Design interaction which was basically graphic design. But after I left, rathna ramanathan also left and joined the RCA which is where I went after csm. I think the course had a big shake up after that. i think there is no right decision - institutions are always a pain in the ass! I'm sure you'll have a great time! xx
I have a question, is there a specified way how we have to show our works? eg I have a short movie so can bring my computer/ipad with me? Also can I just put all my works in one 'book' and show it to the interviewers? xx
Hey! No, I found there wasn't really a specific way at all, but it really did depend on the uni. Some places you were able to bring a laptop and leave it on the table, and other uni's I noticed nobody had anything else other than a traditional portfolio with maybe screenshots of an animation. I think a book would be really cool, I saw a few people who did the same thing, and if I were to do it again, and had the time, I would have made a book myself. :) xxx
I want to go to art school for photography and graphic design. Sam Routhier I would just say to make up your own projects and document start to finish, and any personal sketchbooks etc! As long as you are confident in talking about your work you shall be fine babe xx
Did you take a foundation course before applying for a BA in CSM? Thanks!
Cath Coloma hello! Yes I did, just finished it now, started in September xxx
Could you make a video of your portfolio you applied for the foundation course earlier? I’m so lost I didn’t know where to start.
im waiting on them to respond to give me a portfolio request :(
Elisa Benaggoune don’t worry girl my interview wasn’t until very late March x
Phil Baines?
What about him haha?
I just love phil
go to camberwell for sure
I actually accepted CSM. I really didn't like the campus at Camberwell. x
ah, fair enough. i went to csm graduated 2013. i had a year in southampton row then moved to kings X. its like being in a shopping centre (which is actually what the building was originally intended for). very strange place. quite a few of my course mates left to go to camberwell in second year, the course is so much better there. but hope you have a good time. it works for some people, less for others.
Lauren Keeley ahh that's really interesting! Yeh I only hope I've mad the right decision haha! xxx
I'm sure you'll have a great time! xx

Alexis Brown glow on what??
:) xxx
Lili Phillips Thank you very much! 💞
What size were the sketchbooks you used?
